This review (click) says "Johnson's voice is so beautiful as to compare sensually with eating double-chocolate fudge mousse." Makes me think I gotta hear this song. "Cirio" is a succulent, while cardón and cholla are varieties of cactus. I'm sure of the first verse and chorus, but I have some trouble with the first two lines of the second verse. Called cirio by Hispanics because of its resemblance to a large wax candle. Somehow I can't visualize one as 'dancing,' but the song is good. |

First verse, line 2- 'chollo' heads (pl.) Fouquieria splendens? But I think the word is cholla, the cactus (Ocotillo) with the meanest spines in the world but attractive blooming 'heads'. 'Chollo' is seldom used for the Fouquieria, and in the SW it is sometimes applied to Hispanic men. |

I should have heard "cholla" in the first place, but relied on a dictionary instead of on my memory from that area. I wasn't familiar with "cirio." Based on your advice, I changed the lyrics in my post. My wife likes the idea of a strong, handsome guy who plays the guitar and sings in Spanish. I thought maybe it would help if I learned to play the guitar, but I think she's hoping for more than just that..... -Joe- |

Ocotillo- Fouquieria splendens Opuntia- the Latin name for cholla and other cacti of that group. Digression- "Cholla" is the name of a horse with a growing reputation as a painter. I appreciate your help, and as always, I'm always amazed at your expertise out there.... Also loved the little Spanish lesson.... my talents lie more in Swedish, which is no help in this song! Although I could probably come up with a few Sven & Ole jokes... you know "Sven isn't as dumb as he looks.... although of course he almost CAN'T be!".... Anyway, thanks for the lyrics, I'll sing it at my next jam... by the way, Joe's comment about listening to this lady is a good one. If you haven't heard her sing, you really oughta!..
