Folk on 2

Quite refreshing to listen to the radio tonight and not hear Kate Rusby, Eliza Carthy et al. So much good stuff around and never played. Mike Silver, Jez Lowe, Colum Sands...the list goes on. Why are they not included????

Maybe we need another radio program..... The wealth of talent does need to be encouraged. And I do know who chooses the set list so I understand why the play list is as it is, but the listening public should be acknowledged too.

I think the regional programmes contain a lot more variety.

But there are not that many regional programmes now ! I can hear more good stuff on Late Junction on Radio 3 than any where else !

And at this point may I put my two pennorth in?

I am just preparing this week's progamme for "Thank Goodness It's Folk" which will include Jez Lowe, Michael Marra, Skyhook, The Shee, Ralph McTell, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Swan Arcade, Tom Bliss, a tune from Simon Thoumire off the English International Album and since I am still doing the programme other goodies yet to be revealed.

Details of how to listen can be found at the top of the perma-link.

And I reply to all comments via myspace or direct to the show at tgif@sheffieldlive.org

And good luck with the new show Forsh - the more the merrier as far as I can see. John Adams and Stan Graham both have programmes on community radio.

As far as the BBC is concerned I have been complaining about its coverage for over 30 years. They closed down succesful radio shows all over the north of England.

For a nice variety try the following :-

folk radio http://www.folkradio.co.uk/
Colum Sands on Radio Ulster (Avaialble on BBC IPlayer)
Genevieve Tudor on Radio Shropshire (BBC Radio listen again )

The Radio 2 Mike Harding show is fine. I think the lack of variety might be to do with only having a 1 hour slot whereas the other BBC ones that I mentioned above get 2 hours of play-time.

Folk radio plays endlessly and isn't really a radio programme at all. Its really a giant compilation of all the artists CDs. The good news is that it has a wide range of English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh artists (well one Welsh band anyway though I think one of the girls is antipodean ... ).

I don't know many people from the folk circuit who do listen to FO2. Only those whose idea of folk is somebody with a foothold on the pop scene. Nothing against these people...as Mally says 'You've got to make a livin'! Just not my scene!
Most people I know think the FO stands for something else!

Must be a lot of dust on the cd that I send out to radio shows.
