Joe,
Like a lot of folk on Mudcat, I've been involved in a couple of CDs to raise money for charities. Is there an area anywhere, where these could be advertised?

If you put them on a thread, they tend to submerge. I'm sure a lot of catters are involved in things like this, and with Christmas looming, it would be rather good to have some sort of forum for these.

Clive Lever, who many of us who go to Sidmouth know well, has asked me to put some updated info on the "Guide Cats for the Blind" project, which, as you probably know, has currently released 3 CDs featuring the poems of Les Barker read by Les himself and a number of other famous names like Terry Wogan and Michael Lindsey, as well as performers from the folk world like June Tabor and Bernard Wrigley.

I'll be posting some updates on this over the next few days but just a reminder that the Guide Cats link is on the folowing webpage:-

British Computer Association for the Blind.

The triple set of CDs would make a great gift and possibly introduce people to Les's poems that aren't familiar with them. Believe it or not there are some!

£otes for Nepal - charity CD.

Charles and Anne Barton, who attend one of ther clubs that we go to regularly at Naseby Square, Market Harborough, have produced a CD in aid of the "£otes for Nepal" charity with which they have become involved.

It contains a live version of "Roots" by Show of Hands, two tracks by Pete Morton and others by Backseat Education and Hot Property as well as some tracks provided by regulars at the club.

The charity arranges a wide range of projects including new schools and improvement in water supply.

"My Kind of Music" is a 2 DVD set, which has been produced by John MacRae and features musicians who attend the Barrowden, Gretton, Great Easton and Oakham clubs on the borders of Leicestershire, Rutland and Lincolnshire. It also features performances at the Belvoir Castle Folk Weekend, filmed in the beautiful setting of the castle.

These clubs pull in musicians from a wide area and the DVDs are excellently produced -I can personally really recommend it because the way John has edited it means that it keeps the attention riveted throughout.

John will send you a copy of the DVDs in retutn for a £10 donation to BLESMA -this organisation, which John is involved with, raises funds for limbless ex-servicemen and details of its work can be found at:-

I bumped into Pete Morton at Derby over the weekend. He has a great new CD out called "Casa Abierta", consisting of ten songs in different languages.

Pete is selling the CDs for £12.00 and £2.00 of this is being donated to the "Gambian Schools Trust".

I'm sure we're all dead chuffed that Les Barker is back gigging again!

Just before Les had his heart problem some arrangements were made that he would do a series of gigs to support the "Guide Cats for the Blind" project which is being run by BCAB(British Computer Association for the Blind) and has produced the series of 3 CDs containing Les's poems.

There is a gig in my local area:-

Guidecats Update from Cilve:-

Updates/Future Plans.

Preparations for Volumes 4 and 5 of "Guidecats" are under way simultaneously, and it is hoped that Volume 5 will appear sometime in 2011.
Susan Jameson (Take Three Girls, New Tricks,etc), is recording "The Duvet Cover" , and then hopes to record "Procrastination". She is trying to persuade her husband, James Bolam (Likely Lads, New Tricks, Beiderbecke Affair..) to record "The Atheist and the Bear". Sue is actually becoming quite a fan of Les's work.
Eighties pop singer, Nick Kershaw, has just completed a track called "What Is". Kershaw is at his best making tuneful songs with enigmatic lyrics, and this one is both classic Barker and classic Kershaw. It also soundes very Radio 2 friendly, so fingers crossed!
Tom Bliss is in the studio putting the finishing touches to his track "Van Gogh", and will shortly be recording a second track spoken by Captain Corelli's Mandolin author Louis de Berniere, who is performing in his own right.
Roy Bailey and Wheeler Street have bridged the generations of folk music to record "Ben Kenobi", possibly the first ever space shanty.
BBC Shropshire's former presenter, Nonny James has finished her rendition of "Send in the Cones", which will be released on volume 4, and has covered "Have You Got Any News of the Iceberg?", which will come out on volume 5 in a couple of years time.
The final mixes of the following tracks are now being produced:-

Gaynor Faye ('Calendar Girls stage production, first ever winner of 'Dancing on Ice') :"I've Been Hiding my Light Under a Bushel"
Sian Phillips CBE: "Seeing is Retrieving"
Julia Hills ('Calendar Girls' stage production, 'The Archers')
Lynda Bellingham (All Creatures Great and Small, Second Thoughts) : "Why Don't They Write it on the Side?"

I've already posted this on the Guidecats Myspace thread but thought is would fit in here as well, as it's to do with the sale of the CDs.;-

Alan Titchmarsh gave a superb plug to the Guide Cats for the Blind albums
and the British Computer Association of the Blind on tonight's Melodies for
you. He talked about Peter Bosher visiting him at the TV studios, and
recording a poem by Les Barker called Mid Life Crocus for the next album,
then played "Garden Waste" by Jenny Agutter from volume 3, Top Cat White Tie
and Tails.

n Burton upon Trent - a town synonymous with beer - stands the diminutive Cooper's Tavern separated by the width of the street from England's biggest brewery - Coors. In true David and Goliath style this tiny pub takes on the giant opposite and serves a wealth of good ale from some of the smallest breweries in the country. Wouldn't we all like to get the kind of reviews you can find here Cooper's Tavern

Anyway on 27 February charming landlady Mary is running a charity event for the St Giles Hospice in Lichfield. Music will be provided by Norcsalordie who regularly turn out for the Cooper's beer festivals.

I recommend it to one and all - it's got everything -
Superb pub, excellent ales, wonderful landlady, terrific bunch of regulars, great entertainment, good cause

A friend of ours, John Montague, who is well known to musicians around the Leicester area had a serious heart problem at the beginning of the year and has become involved with the BHF as a result. He sent me this email a couple of days ago, so I thought I'd put it up here:-

Hi Everyone


You may have seen my picture and read the article in the Leicester Mercury Tuesday 27th September and you may even hear me Tuesday 6th on Radio Leicester chatting and playing live about our "Have A Heart" Concerts In Aid of The Glenfield Hospital and British Heart Foundation.



But I really believe in helping raise a few quid as just a small thank you for what these people and organisations do.

I NEED YOUR HELP

I offer this thank you not only personally but to share it with others who have or known someone (perhaps a relative or friend) who have also received treatments from this invaluable service.

The British Heart Foundation are working tirelessly alongside our Dr's & Surgeons at The Leicester Glenfield Hospital who help so many more than just Leicestershire folk.



I also realise that times are difficult at present financially but the work of The Leicester Glenfield Coronary Unit and The British Heart Foundation has and does still carry on.

As I unexpectedly and personally experienced, you just never know when you will need them!!



So please support us if you can and help me spread the word for these two Concerts. I promise they will be great nights of music and entertainment. Featuring The High Sierras, The fabulous Vikki Clayton, Dave Kirk and students of the Hind Leys College.

All The Musicians, College Staff and Students are giving there time for free.

The Jon Hayward Memorial Trust was been set up in memory of a well known Shropshire folk musician who sadly died in November 2006. Jon was passionate about music and always enjoyed sharing this with others. He particularly loved to see children developing their musical ability. He was a true Shropshire man who was born in the county and spent most of his life here. Consequently family and friends felt the Trust to be a fitting memorial to him.

The Trust aims to give some financially disadvantaged children in Shropshire the opportunity to pursue an interest in music. This could be by helping parents with a up to 50% of the cost of musical instrument or singing lessons, by meeting part of the cost of instrument hire, or contributions towards the cost of other musical activities. We are now in our second year of funding students throughout the county.

I spoke to Pat Tynan this morning, and he tells me that we've managed to get tracks from Cat Nav played on Radio 2, BBC Scotland, Radio Wales, Radio Ulster, RTE Radio 1 and a good number of local stations, but radio 4 still remains a closed shop. Apparently one of the problems is that we now have a culture in which we can say the Eff word on air, but we can't promote a charity directly, unless it's Terry Woebegone's Children In Need, or whatever.

So, would you be prepared to send in an email request to see if we can get a track, possibly the ArchBishop of Canterbury's Lost Elephants of Denbigh played on radio 4's Poetry Please? At the moment, this is one of the holy grails, so to speak.

I don't want to do this through FaceBook, because we need requests to look like spontaneous listener requests. Anything that smells of a concerted effort or campaign will torpedo our chances altogether, because Auntie Beeb will quite rightly run a country mile to avoid appearing to respond to special interest groups.

If you do send in a request, don't copy me in, but if you want to send me the message you posted from your sent items folder after it's gone, fair enough. Please let me know the outcome.

At long last, a further helping of the wit and wisdom of the brilliant Les Barker, again to raise funds for the BCAB (British Computer Association Of The Blind). This time it's a two-disc set, stretching to a generous two hours' playing-time, on which assorted musicians and celebrities deliver renditions of Les's songs and poems.

Les himself appears on two of these – on a solo live performance of Sex Is Better Than Poetry and on Hip Hop Hamlet (fronting the Mrs Ackroyd Band); I think (but couldn't totally swear to it) that these recordings are taken from existing available CDs. The remainder, however, appear to be new recordings made specially for this venture, although some of the actual musical parodies herein have been recorded before for earlier Mrs Ackroyd releases (in the case of My Husband's Got No Porridge In Him, by the same artist - Norma Waterson, but in virtually all other cases by different artists). Never fear, for it's good to hear alternative renditions, the originals can take it (and so can you!).

Roy Bailey and Wheeler Street raise the roof (and the stars) with their Ben Kenobi space-shanty, the Haley Sisters deliver an authentic Roseville Fair; Dan & Gene ship on board the enigmatic Sloop John A, Nonny James exhorts us to Send In The Cones and Fairport Convention are roped in to portray Quasi B. Goode.

The spoken-word pieces are aptly characterised in the main, comparing very favourably with earlier instalments in the series: particularly well-suited to their tasks I feel are Richard Briers (Why Don't They Write It On The Side?), Jeremy Taylor (Shi Tsu), Bernard Cribbins (Odd Socks), Bernard Wrigley (Beef Dripping), and Charles Collingwood (Je Ne Sais Quoi), while Bob Harris whispers meaningfully through The Nine Banded Armadillo and we even hear from the Archbishop Of Canterbury (in both English and Welsh!) regarding The Lost Elephants Of Denbigh.

A charity CD raising money for Cystic Fibrosis is now for sale via Ebay and Myspace. It been organised by Dawn Westmoreland and Adam Ellis from Coalville, Leicestershire. It's in memory of Dawn's late husband Tom Westmoreland who was a song writer and musician and suffered from Cystic Fibrosis, "The Tall Man At The Back" is an 80 min compilation CD of Leicester musicians in aid of Cystic Fibrosis charities and in memory of Tom Westmoreland.

"All at Seagrave" - Charity Event.

This is a weekend event which takes place in the "Post Royal Wedding" slot over the Bank Holiday Weekend, Sat April 31st - Mon May 2nd. In aid of the "Rainbows" charity, in the village of Seagrave which is just off the A46 Fosse Way north of Leicester.

Saturday will be "Big Sing" sessions in the White Horse, 12.00 - 2.00 and 6.00 - 11.00 -all free to come along and join in.

Sunday will be a "Big Busk" - in the pub garden if it's fine, inside if not - everyone free to bring instruments and voices along and do a few songs or tunes. 12.00 - 6.00

Monday will be some "folky" bands, that regular attendees at the Folk Night are part of - once again in the garden if weather fine, but outside if not. 12.00 - 5.00.

This should be coinciding with events organised by the Caravan and Camping Club at the Village Hall - the details of this have yet to be confirmed but it looks like there will be a Saturday Night ceilidh and some tune sessions. So there should be something for all tastes.

The whole thing is free but you are asked to donate to the charity. Unfortunately there is no camping unless you are a member of the Caravan and Camping Club.

The regulars at our folk club at the White Horse, Leicestershire have all donated a track to a 16 track compilation that we are selling in aid of Rainbows Childrens Hospice, Loughborough.

The tracks range from trad folk to country with all shades in between. Most are semi pro gigging musicians so the standard is very good.

£6.00 inc p and p to UK - all profits to the charity.
