Probably went the way of the whooping crane, due to everyone thinking that Christianity was somehow obsolete, and they were above that. What they don't grock, is that there are some prophesies, still unfulfilled, that deal with a one world order, so they, in error, think that we aren't still living in 'Biblical' times.

You need not blast me on that one, oh wise ones. Despite what you may think, you really are not too hip for the room!..Actually, you might be too 'tragically hip'

Ah yes those 'old fashioned values'

From Deborah Ross: (The Non-Domestic goddess)

'Eager to get back to old-fashioned values, our guru says: what's wrong with wife-beating and child slavery?'

'In the end, we could only conclude that when anyone refers to a "traditional family" they probably have in mind some kind of Victorian family, and why not?
This would make sense because it was the time when all mothers stayed at home apart from in those rare instances when:
1: they were working class and had to be economically active;
2: they were middle class and had servants to do it all;
3: they were upper class and sent the children away.

To further inform us about this particular traditional family when mothers were always at home - except in the rare instances given above - a nice lady of the kind who is otherwise always on the radio saying children shouldn't know about sex until they are 37 (and Grange Hill, is at the root of all things evil), came in to give us a talk.

"Ladies," she said. "I try to run my own family along Victorian lines, and I think you'd be hard-pressed to find fault with us or complain about any lapses in traditional values.

"We cover the piano-legs, do not believe in lesbians, have all manner of hang-ups about sex, and so what if my husband beats me? After all, he has the statutory right to do so, so long as the stick isn't thicker than his thumb, and my husband would never, ever use a stick thicker than his thumb."

We congratulated the lady for marrying a man who wouldn't use a stick thicker than his thumb. A stick thicker than his thumb would be very bad news.
"Yes," she said. "He is a good man, an excellent man. He only, for example, visits prostitutes three times a week, which means he is probably at home more than a husband who plays golf."

"And your children?", we asked.

"Our son," she said, "goes up chimneys, of course, while our daughter hopes to become a prostitute one day, and why shouldn't she? If it was OK for the Victorians, then we're not going to argue with it."

She continued: "Of course, as a parent, it's essential that you learn to say 'no' to your children if they are to be brought up properly. So it's: 'No, you cannot watch The Simpsons and circle Claire's Accessories like other girls your age. Off you go now, and attend to your prostitute lessons.'

"Lastly, although we have no television - not that that will ever stop me talking about how evil Grange Hill is - or access to the internet, we have never felt the absence of either.

"On the contrary, we have spent many pleasant evenings together, as a traditional family with traditional family values, either further covering up the piano legs or helping the unwed parlourmaid strangle her illegitimate babies at birth. It sure beats Ludo. In fact, if there is no infanticide on the go, I now find that the evenings can seem awfully long. Give it a try."

And the alternative?, we asked. "Well," she said, "the only alternative is to accept the modern world for what it is."
Yup, we said. We think we'll go for that one, but thanks so much all the same.'

There is more than sex and violence on TV, khandu. Check the listings. Don't watch what offends you. Start with Meercat Manor. Great fun, high drama, totally enthralling and entertaining. "House" can be interesting but also incredibly annoying. I am a great fan of Ghost Hunters but it is not everyone's cup of tea. The cooking contests/shows are usually less than violent for all but the ingredient of choice. That is more than ten hours per week of TV - enough! Now go for a walk.

In the UK we used to have a watershed time of 9 oclock... before which, nothing more than heterosexual kissing was allowed. Most kids now tend to watch the soaps and sad to say they see a lot of adults and young people jumping into bed with each other as soon as they meet.. as well as many other unsavoury things which would not have been acceptable when the watershed was set..... Just another of our values which has slowly been watered down... amongst thousands of others.
Best wishes, Mike.

I have no problem with sex in movies but I do think that graphic violence is overdone.

NBC actually has brought back one really uplifting and enchanting show which was new last year, Eli Stone, on Tuesday evening. It is really very good and rare among prime time tv, imo.

Sins, Meercat Manor is fun to watch but there's plenty of sex and violence in it!**bg**

The whooping crane has been revived, and is now doing well...

"...there are some prophesies, still unfulfilled, that deal with a one world order, so they, in error, think that we aren't still living in 'Biblical' times."

hmmm? We have lots of folks who 'think' that way, but let's not assume that many bad opinions automatically makes a valid point.....

You all do know khandu was quoting the theme song of the cartoon "Family Guy", right?

Family Guy Theme Song

It seems to me
That all we see
Is violence in movies and sex on TV
But where are all those old fashioned values
on which we used to rely?...

...lucky there's a family guy
lucky there's a man who
positively can do
all the things that make us laugh and cry...
he's.. our.. family guy!

Khandu! There's only a little sex and violence on MOAB. Mom missed you, but she's been practicing.

Good to see you back, khandu. (If you've been away that is. Maybe I've just been reading the wrong threads. I usually do.)

Not sure what to write here. On the one hand I agree with the sentiment expressed, and I find Family Guy stupifyingly unfunny, so I guess I fit into the uncool mob of puritans, luddites and romantics who would like to see a little less tit in every damn thing I look at, a little more humour that didn't involve sodomy, and a little more implied violence, which, when done well, is far more effective than bits of flesh sliding down a wall.

No it's:

...lucky there's a family guy
lucky there's a man who
positively can do
all the things that make us effin' cry...
he's.. our.. family guy!

And it's meant to be ironic. There's more sex and violence on that show than any 2 or 3 others.

Ha! When I posted this a couple of weeks back, I really expected it to become a discussion of Family Guy, a rather twisted cartoon program that I ashamedly admit to loving.

I never expected it to take the off-roads it has taken. But I should have learned by now that threads seldom take the road I expect. Look at MOAB! (It has taken every road known to man!!)

Yes Alice I saw that episode. I think I have seen every episode several times.

Guest from Sanity... I have a basic agreement with you on your first paragraph. However, the last thing you said seemed unnecessarily combative.

John O'L, I am not back yet, I just drop a snippet every now and then to keep in touch.

Rap...keep MOAB healthy!

Ta!

Quite. Just the other day she was saying, "Where, oh where, is Khandu? He, she, or it hasn't been around in a couple of coons' ages. Is he daid, and if so, was it by a truck on the highway or an irate wife?"
