From: GUEST,distinctlyelan Hello all, I'm a new transplant to San Diego from Baltimore, and was wondering if the county/city had and sea chantey sings (or folk sings for that matter) on a monthly/weekly basis? In Maryland, there was Ships' Company that managed a bi-monthly sing at the local pub and I miss it and would like to share it with my coworkers at the maritime museum here. Any ideas? |

Take I5 toward the Airport, go down Laurel St to the waterfront, and cruise along Harbor a bit north of Laurel. The unmistakable landmark is the Star of India, née Euterpe a huge tall square-rigged iron-riveted barkentine from the wool trade of the 19th century. ABoard the Star, the Bos'n often leads chanty sings when training young school children. They also sometimes feature particular chanty and other sea-song singers. But a visit to the various ships and boats of the Museum will be well worthwhile and will let you learn what they currently have on the agenda. As for folk music in general, why there's all kinds of goings on. Here's a long list of Google hits from which you will be able to cull items of interest. Welcome to America's Finest City!! From: Desert Dancer Hey, Amos, it sounds like distinctlyelan (a name that's way too hard to type!!) moved out to work at the maritime museum... maybe he/she can get a regular event started there, like up in Frisco. After 42 years, since relocating here from central California, I still marvel at the Star of India whenever I see her. Another resource you might check out is Lew Curtiss' Folk Arts Rare Records shop on Adams Avenue, in the Normal Heights area. The owner is an archivist for the Smithsonian, among other things, and has an amazing collection of old recorded sounds. Welcome to a place where you never have to shovel your weather. |

The arboretum building is the one that looks like the Taj Majal made out of giant popsicle sticks. We gonna jam there this coming Sunday. Come join us. (Hugh, The Banjoest, has just informed me that, contrary to my former beliefs, spirits such as beer, wine, whuskey, are allowed in the park during daytime hours -- just no glass containers of any sorts.
