BS: I catch hell from Winona...

Well, I got a call from Winona "R" today, and she gave me hell. It was about my recent, shortlived infatuation with Sarah Palin. I was delighted to actually get a call from from my darling Winona, and nearly fainted with joy when I realized who was on the line, but I was not prepared for the tirade that followed...

"Are you out of your mind!" she screamed. "You're in love with Sarah F-ing Palin????? You have totally lost it! You have seriously lost your !!**ing marbles this time! I could understand the thing with Hillary, that was sort of cute because it was so totally unrealistic...but Sarah Palin!!!! You idiot!!! Are you aware of what that woman stands for? She is so NOT Hollywood that it makes me sick just thinking about it! I didn't grow up in a commune and get exposed to all that counterculture thinking around Timothy Leary and all to see people I share some common values with fall like a ton of bricks for a fascist moose hunting dominatrix from Alaska! How can you claim to love ME and then do THIS? I'm not going to stand for it!"

And that was just the beginning.

Well, I tried to explain that it had just been a brief infatuation resulting from the hypnotic effects of mainstream media, combined with the confusion that can temporarily result from consuming large amounts of 100 proof Canadian Maple Syrup at an all-night jam session.

But she wasn't listening...

Nope, she was talking. She did a whole lot of talking. Boy, can that girl talk. Yessiree.

So...I apologized profusely, pled temporary insanity, promised to mend my errant ways, and begged for forgiveness.

It's over with Sarah and me. Finished. Kaput. Done. Erased. Expunged. Terminated.

I shall only love Winona henceforth. In fact I have ALWAYS loved only Winona. Anything else would be simply inconceivable.

Glad you came to your senses, L.H. (Even though it was kicking and screaming).

I won't congratulate you on coming to your senses, Little Hawk, but I do approve your new choice of delusions.

Well, LH, I tried to tell ya' that this thing with Ms Sarah was gonna work out bad fir ya, ol' buddy.... I mean, look... I'm a bluesman for a reason and that reason is the blues is 99% about womenz and other natural disaters... Hey, I unnerstand womenz...

(No, Boberdz... You of all people don't know jack about jill when it comes to womenz...)

Forget that... I meant to say that I know that womenz will always, or at least half the time, which ever4 is greater or lesser, screw yer head up... No, not that head... The one that houses yer thinkerator... Yup, womenz has only one purpose... Okay, throw in cookin', cleanin', launderatin', sex, naggin' and being right 199% of the time they have more than one purpose but their biggie is screwin' with yer head...

I wouldn't get all that upset about Winona, LH... Tomorrow she'll call you up and ask if she can come over and amke a pot roast fir ya' and maybe bring some chick-flick DVD fir ya' all to watch afterwards...

See, mah man, that's the wzay they do us... No, it ain't fair at all but that's they way they do us so just grin and bare it... Ya' hear???

Plus, Ms. Sarah don't like no Canadians since she found out that ya'll is communists...

It was those photos that were posted last week that convinced you, right? You couldn't resist them. I'll need to thank the wise woman who posted those for your consideration.

George? George??

In the phone conversations I've tapped into heard about, Ms. R always referred to "Curious Georgie-Pooh" and then giggled a lot.

That wasn't a movie, and they weren't aliens, it was actually news footage of the republican convention ...

So the drippy green acid was a metaphor?

Drippy green acid is sometimes metaphoric, but usually symbolic. For instance, in song

"...and God didn't make
Drippy green acid
And it don't rain
In Indianapolis
In the Summertime...."

the DGA is obviously symbolic for something else.

Possibly Shame McBride, but perhaps not.

The Directors Guild of America is symbolic? I thought they were representative. I'm so confused.

John O'L - are you channelling Will Rogers?

"I don't make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts."

Her film heyday was in the late 80's and the 90's, but she is still acting and appearing in various movies from time to time. The shoplifting incident occurred at a time when she was doing extremely well and it more or less killed her career for some time...or so it seemed.

Winona always excelled at playing a certain "type", and that type was necessarily a very youthful character, because her slender build and delicate features suited those roles. It gets harder to parlay that into good film parts as time goes by.

The shoplifting, seems to me, was evidence of an emotional problem, given the fact that she certainly didn't need to shoplift any fancy clothes!

I like Winona for several reasons, and among them are the fact that she almost always played parts in intelligent movies, did not go the typical starlet route (meaning: turn herself into a blatant sex symbol a la Mariah Carey and a million others), conveyed intelligence and subtlety in the roles she played, and had the sense not to pose for nude photos. The latter was particularly wise on her part. Mystery beats exposure.

She is not one of Hollywood's bankable female stars of the moment any longer for whatever reason. I don't particularly care about that. That whole business is completely ephemeral anyway, so why should it matter?
