31 Oct 08 - 01:25 PM (#2480977) Subject: Festival in NYC From: NY Pinewoods The New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club (Folk Music Society of New York, Inc.) invites you to come and enjoy the Eisteddfod New York, our annual Festival of Traditional Music, held this year in Jackson Heights, Queens, November 14 to 16. The festival features local, national and international performers who are steeped in living ethnic traditions. It has programs ideal for the whole family, and provides a rare chance in New York to hear such diverse high quality performers all in a single venue. Listen, tap your feet, or sing along to ballads, fiddle tunes, southern mountain and country songs, humorous and serious songs, and much more. The Eisteddfod New York features three main concerts, more than 20 workshops, participatory sessions, a marketplace, a room set aside for a Mudcat gathering, and a free family concert, all with a spirit of warmth and openness. It is being held, at the Renaissance Charter School, 35-59 81st Street, Jackson Heights, near many subway and bus lines. The festival begins with a concert Friday night at 7:30, runs all day Saturday, Sunday morning, and ends with a concert Sunday afternoon, finishing at 5:30. A special free family concert will be on Saturday, 12:30 -1:30 PM. Information can be found at www.eisteddfod-ny.org or by calling 718-429-3437 or 718-672-6399. Tickets are available online at www.eisteddfod-ny.eventbrite.com. The festival still needs volunteers to host/monitor individual presentations, assist with hospitality for performers and volunteers, and conduct other tasks necessary to keep the festival moving smoothly. As a volunteer, 6 hours of work entitles you to free admission to the entire festival, and 3 hours of work entitles you to free admission on that day. You can also get free breakfast and lunch at the festival, and will be welcome at the post-festival party with performers and staff. Just call one of the numbers above to volunteer. |

We'll be hearing the voices of Ezra "Fuzzy" Barhight (born 1870's) of the southern tier, Tom Kelly and George Edwards from the Catskills, Lydia Gyderson (born 1844!) from Long Eddy and many others along with some northern NY fiddlers and more. I'll have a nice handout as well, with contact information for many of the unpublished collections of traditional New York singers and musicians. |

The tentative schedule shows that it wil take place from 2:30 to 3:30 PM on Saturday, November 15. This time around we may focus on Guthrie songs dealing with war and peace, sex, or religion. (I've walked it, but it is a LONG walk.) It is right near the subway, and close to the highway too. You do not have to drive through Manhattan to get there from most parts of the US. There are travel directions at http://www.eisteddfod-ny.org The neighborhood has become known for restaurants, especially Indian, Pakistani, and Bengladeshi restaurants, as well as restaurants from all parts of South America. Best of all, look at the list of performers! |

02 Nov 08 - 10:19 AM (#2482435) Subject: RE: Festival in NYC From: Suffet I frequently walk from the Marine Air Terminal at LaGuardia Airport to the Renaissance Charter School area in Jackson Heights, and vice versa. In good weather it's an easy walk straight along 82nd Street, perhaps two miles at most, probably less. The main terminal is somewhat farther away, and you can approach it via 94th Street, about half a mile east of 82nd. But there is no need to walk. If you are coming from LaGuardia, take the Q33 bus from the main terminal and get off at 37th Avenue and 82nd Street. Walk one short block west on 37th Avenue to 81st Street, turn the corner to the right, and there you are. If you are coming from Manhattan via public transportation, the easiest thing to do is to take the Q32 bus. You can pick it up near Penn Station on West 32nd Street just east of 7th Avenue, or anywhere along Madison Avenue from East 32nd up to East 59th Street. It leaves you off diretly in front of the Renaissance Charter School on 81st Street near 37th Avenue. By subway, you would take the No. 7 Flushing Line local train to the 82nd Street elevated station. When you get out, you would walk one long block north (opposite direction of traffic) along 82nd Street to 37th Avenue which you cross, and then turn left and walk one short block west to 81st Street. That's between 35th & 37th Avenues. There is no 36th Avenue in this part of Queens. Northern Boulevard is three long blocks to the north. Roosevelt Avenue is one long block to the south. US Post Office: Jackson Heights, NY. ZIP Code 11372. On 37th Avenue between 78th & 79th Streets. Queensborough Public Library: Jackson Heights branch is on 81st Street between 35th & 37th Avenues, next door to the Renaissance Charter School. Pharmacies: The closest is Rite Aid on the corner of 83rd Street & 37th Avenue. There are a Duane Reade and an Eckerd on 82nd Street between 37th & Roosevelt Avenues. Banks with ATMs: The closest is the North Fork Bank on the corner of 82nd Street & 37th Avenue. There is a Chase Bank on 82nd Street near 37th Avenue. There are several other banks along 37th Avenue between the school and 74th Street. Medical services: Western Queens Health Associates has a walk-in center at 82-11 37th Avenue, between 82nd & 83rd Street. In an emergency, Elmhurst Hospital, four blocks away at 79-01 Broadway, has an ER. There are numerous dentists and opticians along 37th Avenue. Parking garage: There is a commercial parking garage on 82nd Street just north of 37th Avenue. If you are driving along 82nd Street (one way) the entrance will be on your left just before you reach 37th Avenue. Get your receipt validated at the festival and you will receive a discount. Gasoline stations: There are several along Northern Boulevard. Car services in the Jackson Heights area: Phone: 718-591-1111, 718-672-2222, 718-424-4444, 718-424-9300, or 718-446-8700. Taxicabs: Licensed yellow taxis, the only kind that can lawfully be hailed on the street, rarely cruise in this part of Queens. Your best chance of finding one is on Northern Boulevard. Yellow taxis can also sometimes be found on Roosevet Avenue. Nearest subway (elevated railway) station: 82nd Street & Roosevelt Avenue (No. 7 Flushing Line local). Nearest bus stops: Q32 from Penn Station stops directly in front of the school. The Q32 to Penn Station stops at 82nd Street & 37th Avenue. Q33 from LaGuardia Airport also stops at 82nd Street & 37th Avenue. Q33 to LaGuardia Airport stops at 83rd Street & 37th Avenue. Nearest Long Island Railroad station: Woodside. With terrific performers doing 4 workshops at a time all day, it is going to be hard to decide which to go to. In addition, room 309 has been set aside for a Mudcat gathering. One of my friends who was at Pinewoods Camp when Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman were there, has been going around town telling people how great they are. I am looking forward to hearing Barry O'Neill. Good music, good friends, lots of nearby restaurants with good food, I'm looking forward to having a good time. |
