31 Oct 08 - 03:45 PM (#2481085) Subject: PROBABLY NOT FOLK: song tune ID From: clueless don There is a song tune that I have been wondering about for a long time. As I recall it, it goes something like this: X: 1 T: unknown song melody M:4/4 L:1/4 Q:190 K:C |G4|G4|(G4|G2) BA| G4|G4|(G4|G2) cA| G4|A4|(B4|B2) ed| (A4|A2) ed|c2 BA|B2 A^G| |G4|G4|(G4|G2) BA| G4|G4|(G4|G2) cA| G4|_B4|(A4|A2) ed| cG3|dG3|(c4|c)| If you copy and paste this abc code (starting with the "X:1" line) into the window at concertina.net, and click the "submit" button, you can get the dots and listen to a midi version. I'm pretty sure that when I heard it originally, it was a song with words. But I cannot remember any of the words. It might be a show tune. More recently I was visiting Glen Echo Park in Maryland, and the park's Dentzel Carousel played this tune, but in 3/4 time. But the version above (in 4/4) is how I remember first hearing it. Anybody know it? Don |

I wish there were a program that could identify "earworm" tunes like that. It's going to stick in my mind all week. If there were words to tie to the tune, it would come easier, but I think this is a theme from a symphonic piece - I'm guessing a piano concerto. Anybody??? -Joe- |

31 Oct 08 - 08:48 PM (#2481295) Subject: RE: PROBABLY NOT FOLK: song tune ID From: Jack Campin It's not in Barlow and Morgenstern's Dictionary of Musical Themes. Sounds to me like the intro to a Viennese waltz. |

This tune is vewy, vewy familiar to me, and I can't place it. I played the MIDI for my favowite wiolin teacher and for a Julliard-twained pianist, and no cigar. Oh, I'm sooooo fwustwated. 04 Nov 08 - 09:28 AM (#2484382) Subject: RE: PROBABLY NOT FOLK: song tune ID From: clueless don I listened to "As long as he needs me". That's not it, but I certainly hear the similarities. Thanks for the suggestion , Al! Indeed, thank you to everyone who gave a listen. It seems that I have once again stumped the Mudcat, as I did in this case. But I'm not trying to stump the Mudcat! I'm trying to find the answers! Don |

His hat was thrown back and his spurs were a jingling, and as he approached he was singing this song: whoopy aye yi o git along little doggies, it's your misfortune and none of my own. Whoopy ti-yi o git along little doggies, you know that Wyoming will be your new home. |
20 Mar 10 - 02:40 PM (#2868201) Subject: RE: PROBABLY NOT FOLK: song tune ID From: Stringsinger It sounds like a theme from an Italian opera. I think it is in 3/4 time. It also might be a Siggy Romberg waltz from an Operetta. The chords sound like: C | Co7 | G7 | G7 | G7 | G7+ | C | C | C | D7 | G | G | A7 | A7| D7 | D7 | C | Co7 | G7 | G7 | G7 | G7+ | C | C | C | Gm6 | A7 | Cm |C | G7 | C | C || |
