I am especially thinking of you, Art, and how much he meant to you. My condolences to all. CHICAGO (AP) — Pulitzer Prize-winning author and activist Studs Terkel has died at age 96. Colleague and close friend Thom Clark said Terkel's son, Dan Terkell, confirmed his death today. He died at home at 2:40 p.m., Clark said. Studs Terkel is best known for his street-wise portrayals of the working class. He contrasted rich and poor along the same Chicago street in the 1966 novel "Division Street: America," explored the Depression in 1970's "Hard Times" and chronicled how people felt about their jobs in 1974's "Working." He won a Pulitzer in 1985 for his remembrances of World War II in his novel "The Good War." Dan Terkell issued a statement through Clark. "My dad led a long full eventful, sometimes tempestuous, but very satisfying life," Terkell said, describing his father's death as "peaceful, no agony. This is what he wanted." |

I was one of the first females to work at the local FM university radio station. I engineered the recording of an interview he did there while on a lecture tour. He made a point of talking about equality for women as he looked through the studio glass to where I was doing the recording... and he smiled. It was rare at that time to hear a "girl" announcing on the radio or see a woman doing anything in the studio other than clerical work. He was an amazing man. I will never forget meeting him. Studs had been in hospice care for a while in Chicago, so we knew this was imminent. But it's always a shock when we first lose the light from such an incandescent flame of life. I later found his books, read the first one because I remembered his lively and perceptive remarks about those times, and read more because of the way he brought out memories and feelings from people of all walks of life and all points of view, allowing their words to speak for themselves. I was thrilled to be able hear the man himself when he was a guest at Schwarz's bookshop in Milwaukee. The archive of his interviews will continue to be a treasure. His nickname, Studs, was because he was a great fan of a novel from a novel in the 30s, "Studs Lonnergan". He said something like, "There was one time that nickname sort of got me in trouble." This was after Terkel's great book, Working, came out. He said, "A librarian I knew told me that some bluenose superior who was always on her case came to her with a request she'd made to acquire Working for the library. 'I won't allow you to get this book! We don't stock pornography!' he said. "'What book is that?' she asked him. 'Working Studs', by Terkel!'" Priceless! Dave Oesterreich |

We were in Chicago for the Haymarket Centennial and we stopped by to tape a show with the Stud Turtle. We had to wait until he came back from lunch at the Billy Goat Tavern. One of the best concerts I have ever had the pleasure of attending was the Tribute to Woody Guthrie at the Folk Alliance meeting in Nashville several years ago and Studs Terkel's part in that concert was a profound addition. |

01 Nov 08 - 08:23 PM (#2482026) Subject: RE: Obit: Studs Terkel - 31 Oct 2008 96 yrs old From: Art Thieme Here is a personal memory of Studs Terkel that I will always treasure: Back in 1990 or maybe '91, we were planning to have a two-day weekend musical celebration to recognize my thirtieth year playing at the coffeehouse and gallery called THE NO EXIT. It was thought that my appearing on Studs' radio show would be the perfect way to let those interested know about the planned party. We ran it past Studs' people at the station, and as it turned out, he was all for doing it---so it was set up. The show was to be recorded at WFMT-FM a few days before it would be aired. SOMETHING YOU MUST KNOW: These were times of change at WFMT. New blood was coming in---and that meant some of the old hands and old ways of doing things were leaving. Studs was rather upset. No, it was worse. Studs was exceptionally pissed off! And he let anyone within earshot of him know his feelings. Onward!----- We were set to record the show in the early afternoon. I got there about noon. At 1:30 Studs hadn't returned from lunch. At 2:00 he was still not there. About 2:30 the man blustered in and breezed past us like a small tornado with red socks on. Twenty minutes later, though, we were set up---and ready to begin. Folks, knowing Studs, I was ready for anything. This man was a hero of mine. Studs introduced me and told some of my background, and I started with a song or two. Then he began to talk about the anniversary thing we had planned. --- Slowly, I saw that Studs didn't really know why I was there at all. He said it was to be a celebration of the club's 30th year in existence. I, gently, corrected him, and went on to talk about his old friend, Win Stracke---also a mentor of mine. One thing led to another, and it also became pretty obvious that Studs had imbibed his lunch from a shot glass. At one point I sang a song I had learned from Win Stracke called "STATE OF ILLINOIS." The song came to a big (for me, anyhow) end---and there was total silence. I was amazed. Studs had fallen asleep!! ---- What to do?! Well, I chose to hit a rather loud chord on my banjo. Studs awoke talking about how that song had just taken him away to rural Illinois pastures. It was a wonderful recovery!! -- The man surely was a pro. The rest of the hour long show, I thought, went pretty well. As I was putting on my coat, the sound engineer handed me a cassette tape of the show---and he actually winked as I walked out the door. "Conveniently," the official tape of that program was either lost or erased or whatever. It never did go on the air! --- But we sold out all four shows at the No Exit that weekend. -- I think I'm gonna dig it out and listen to it right now... Art Thieme |

I have a great collection of his interviews with musicians 'And They All Sang' and among the folkies interviewed are Pete Seeger, Big Bill Broonzy, Woody Guthrie, Jean Richie, Alan Lomax and Bob Dylan I know it was Studs Turkel who greatly influenced one of Australia's pioneer Oral Historians Wendy Lowenstein with her 1968 classic about the last depression 'Weevils in the Flour' What a life! |

What I meant was that he was angry with what he saw going on at WFMT at that moment, so he had a few too many at lunch that day. It was very "Chicago" -- pretty much like his friends Alderman Paddy Bauler and Mike Royko, Win Stracke and Nelson Algren might've done. I loved Studs for all he stood for---for highlighting the sincere opinions of real people in his books -- for always standing for what he felt was right even through Bush and Reagan and Joe McCarthy and the diminishing of labor in the USA. --- So, I'm sorry if some took what I said wrong. Before Studs' show, I knew Win Stracke from the commercials he did, but he was a regular on Studs' show, and, of course, Win went on to help found the Old Town School in Oak Park at Dawn Greening's home. I have tremendous admiration for Studs and all the others, like Art, the Fox Valley and OTSFM folks, and Rich Warren, that have kept carrying on the work for folk music in Chicago. We are starting to create traditions like these now in Portland, OR, at Artichoke Community Music. We'll miss you Studs, Chris |

(Read Ed Cray's fine biography of Woody for details.) Those were the old days of the Almanac Singers. Chris, Thats grand stuff you are doing. Same with Francy in Toledo, Oregon. In 1967 Carol and I were "on the road" and we eventually settled in Depoe Bay, Ore. because we loved the coast in Lincoln County. THERE we opened our Folk Art Shop---but we were years too soon. Farrell's trilogy, "Young Lonigan", "The Young Manhood of Studs Lonigan" and "Judgment Day", classics that were passed along to read in my family, reflecting the Irish Catholic Chicago South Side, about the life of Studs Lonigan. His book, "The Good War," was a great example of his willingness to view and review history warts and all, rather than idealize it or compromise the truth. I doubt we'll see his like again, unless there is a sea change in the direction of the media. |
