I figure it's American election overload.

Or it might be part of the aging process.

It could be Amos's fault.

Whatever it is, man, something has got to be done about it soon. Even the Walkabouts Verse thread fails to stir my interest. You know it's bad when it comes to that.

Winter's coming. Wouldn't a trip down here to southeastern North Carolina with our beautiful sandy beaches and daytime temps in the 60s and 70s F be a nice way to shake off the boredom? Especially if Obama gets elected. Then it won't be so scary to come south of the border.

Maybe if Shane could be persuaded to take Chongo for a walk, you could follow at a safe distance and watch people's reactions.

Wow! A lot of great ideas coming in here. Well, let's hope Obama gets elected, eh, Carol? I have to get my danged passport renewed, it's out of date.

Shane and Chongo together is a very amusing idea. Shane's reaction to Chongo would be quite disrespectful, I think, while Chongo would regard Shane with absolute disgust and contempt. It would make for an interesting confrontation, for sure. Shane is not particularly courageous, so I'm betting he would back off first...not without a few parting remarks, mind you.

Little Hawk,
I think I envy you. From the moment I open my eyes until I fall asleep at night I am either doing something or making a list of things to do. I can't remember the last time I was bored.
Read a book; read a newspaper; look at what is going on in the Congo. Lose the chimp and get a life.

That was harsh - sorry.
But I can't imagine any excuse for being bored. The internet has opened limitless opportunites for entertainment, information, communication. We have more to keep us busy than any generation before us.

LIVE!

"We have more to keep us busy than any generation before us."

Ah, well, it seems that way, doesn't it? And yet our lives are (in my opinion) rather empty compared to the lives of people in simpler societies....for one simple reason: instead of dealing directly with relating to other people in basic ways, we are relating with all our fancy gadgets. The computer. The TV. The cell phone. The ipod. The snow blower. The blackberry. The washer. The dryer. The car. The Osterizer. The whatever.... ;-)

We lead far more emotionally isolated lives than our ancestors did, because we are overwhelmed with technology and tucked away in our house or our apartment or our cubicle at work...interacting with a damn machine instead of a variety of other human beings.

Having been in Cuba and Trinidad and Mexico where people have far less technology and possessions, I can say that we are the ones living in poverty...but it's not material poverty. It's spiritual, social, and emotional poverty.

I'm generalizing, of course... ;-) I'm sure there are plenty of you just about to leap on your keyboard and tell me just how WRONG I am when it comes to you! Fine. ;-)

Well, I became addicted to using the Internet to keep my mind busy about 3 years ago, and where am I now? I have virtually exhausted the possibilities on the Internet. Yes. I know it sounds incredible, but I can barely find anything on the Internet any longer that stirs my interest, and which I haven't already seen and am done with.

We do not have more to keep us busy than any generation before us, SINSULL, it just seems that way. "Busy" isn't the point. The point is an actual level of real emotional engagement with life. Business is how many people cover up their lack OF emotional engagement, in fact. They have to keep moving, because if they were to stop and actually consider where they are, the emptiness of their lives would terrify them. That's why people get so antsy and stressed out when they have to wait for a minute at a traffic light. They're afraid of their own internal emptiness...and that brief forced wait at the light puts in right in front of them, and they can't stand it.

That's good, SINSULL. ;-) I was speaking in very generalized terms about cultural differences between the developed world and the Third World, you understand.

Yes, Susan, it is definitely possible to be busy and bored at the same time. It's quite common too.

Look on the bright side, LH. You could live next door to Bobert, and wonder if the bear will knock on the door tonight.

I take your point about the busy triviality of todays western lifestyle, though. Most people in the world are more concerned about basic survival.
Thinking about it, I'll take it western style.

If you lived here, you could volunteer to digitise my LPs. Tedium on tedium after the first one.

If you lived here, you could volunteer to do the same for mine. ;-)

What I noticed in Cuba and Trinidad was...people seemed to be more relaxed. They seemed to have more liesure time and to enjoy it more than their North American counterparts. They seemed to have a livelier social life and more contact with family. The youngsters seemed to be more mature and have a lot more respect for their elders...and they were not spending several hours a day playing video games.

Hmmm. Maybe there's a connection there.

I'm with Sinsull- I rarely get bored. At least, I'm not bored if I have control over my surroundings. Last week I was at a really, really strange and bizarre, ego-driven event where I eventually thought that if the MC showed up on stage just one more time with her peculiar combination of whine, plea and gushy, I was going to yell something extremely rude.

Boredom, Good Hawk, is entirely a function of the outlook of the boree. You live in the most intricate, interesting planetary biozone in the known Universe, and have as much to learn about it as any school-child despite all your years of learning;; ifyou are bored, you may want to review your assumptions and see about redesigning them.

Walkin' Round in Women's Underwear
(to be sung to "Walkin' in a Winter Wonderland")

Lacy things -- the wife is missin',
Didn't ask -- her permission,
I'm wearin' her clothes,
Her silk pantyhose,
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear.

In the store -- there's a teddy,
Little straps -- like spaghetti,
It holds me so tight,
Like handcuffs at night,
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear.

In the office there's a guy named Melvin,
He pretends that I am Murphy Brown.
He'll say, "Are you ready?" I'll say,"Whoa, Man!"
"Let's wait until our wives are out of town!"

Later on, if you wanna,
We can dress -- like Madonna,
Put on some eyeshade,
And join the parade,
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear!

Lacy things... missin',
Didn't ask... permission,
Wearin' her clothes,
Her silk pantyhose,
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear,
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear,
Walkin' 'round in women's underwear!
