The Victoria Hall at Saltaire near Bradford was sold out for Bellowhead's Halloween gig, and the band didn't disappoint. Since I started following them at their inception, they have become more assured, more integrated, and more inspiring. Watching them last night was, on some occasions a bit like watching the Large Hadron Collider go critical, as they wove progressively more intricate arrangements into tighter and tighter and faster and faster loops, while embellishing the whole operation with elements of choreography and lunatic "business". By the end of the evening the audience were leaping and whirling themselves, getting the band back for a second encore, before going home in a state of astonishment. Bellowhead are something entirely new on the folk scene, and are going from strength to strength. I suggest you get to see them while they're hot - Boden, Spiers et al could do what hasn't been done for a generation, and bring folk-based music into the mainstream, with luck and a following wind. If they want to go mainstream I think they will need to get out of the usual safe folk venues. The audience age was still 40 plus ish apart from a few teenagers six of whom I brought .Easily spotted with halloween light up horns.Their younger fan club I think largely consists of the teeneage kids of forty something folk fans like me. The members of Bellowhead I bet all have morgages and kids so are unlikely to do the risky gigs that make no money but put you into the mainstream. The sort of gig that has standing in a city hall for 1500. Would they sell that type of venue out I wonder. Great if they could but i'm not sure they ever will. |

Unfortunately I was disappointed (I think the sound man was asleep until the last song) and the crowd seemed to me to be non-plussed. |

It's a very lively place. |

I was at Proms in the Park...I think part of the problem was the queue was so long to get in that by the time I'd found a place to sit myself down I only had seconds to spare before they were on stage. I suspect a lot of the audience had a similar problem. I'm one of those twenty somethings. My parents aren't exactly folk fans...I've come in from the mainstream after seeing them on TV. :) Only been a 'fan' since april...but already been to see them 3 times. |

And i am so glad i went to see Bellowhead instead of going to one of the halloween parties i'd been invited to.
