I went to school with Hilton, creator of the legendary riff in House of the Rising Sun. In a recent discussion one chap insisted that this was not his real name. I'm 100% sure it was! Can anyone confirm this - Hilton, are you there?

A swift google reveals this from the bio on Hilton's own website

Hilton was born Hilton Stewart Paterson Valentine on May 21, 1943 in North Shields, Northumberland England ( Counties were redistricted in later years and now North Shields is part of Tyne & Wear).

I always loved Hilton Valentine - was a Gretch Tenessean he used to ply. A bit like the one George Harrison sometimes played.

I wrote to him a few years back and he wrote back - he was living in Connecticut at the time. Even now his name on a guitar magazine will get me buying it. I've seen The Animals with every line up since Alan Price left. Chas Chandler died of course, and I believe Dave Rowberry. Eric Burdon fronts his own band.

It wasn't until Hilt left that it stopped sounding like The Animals. He was the real soul of the band. You could replace everything else.

Incidentally.
We Gotta Get Out of this Place - played over the credits of Dennis Potter's play - 'Vote Vote Vote for Nigel Barton'.

So prescient......so near to the soul of every decent Englishman.

The high point of English folk music - possibly all English culture, as far as I'm concerned.
