BS: english-speaking theatre in Argentina!?

hellooo everyone, it's been a while since I was here, I hope everyone is well!
I have a question for you helpful mudcat folks....

I'm studying Theatre Production and in the summer I have to do a work placement for 8-10 weeks, ideally abroad (to get experience of theatre in another culture etc etc) - what I'm looking at at the moment is maybe going to Argentina (thought I'd combine my love of theatre with my love of Latin America! And Buenos Aires is probably the best place to do it)

The only thing is my Spanish - it's basic conversational, and it's ok, but it's probably not good enough to do a work placement.

I've found some maybes but I was wondering if anyone knows any bilingual or english-speaking theatre companies in Argentina, pref Buenos Aires?

any help or ideas would be great!!

Mudcatter "Escamillo" lives there. You might try sending him a PM. I haven't seen him around a lot, lately, though. Sounds like fun! Good luck!

Hello Laura - good to hear from you again ! I remember a few years back when you were going to be in your college production of "Les Mis", unless I'm getting you confused with someone else ??

Anyway - I'm very pleased to hear about your course. The "Contacts" directory (which you no doubt know) only lists English-speaking theatre companies in Europe and not the rest of the world - but I've found this one for you in Buenos Aires: "On the Road Theatre Company" They describe themselves as "A professional theatre company that performs in schools, teacher training colleges and theatres, mainly in Buenos Aires." The website has video clips of their current tour (including a musical of "Romeo & Juliet").

Have you tried putting a message up on "The Stage" discussion board ?
Also, I don't know whether Equity might be able to suggest somewhere where you might be able to enquire. Some of the other theare networking websites might also be worth a try. Does your college subscribe to any foreign theatre journals - that may also give you some links. Not much use to you, but for Germany there is, for instance, the journal "Theater Heute", and I should think there would be a similar publication for Argentina.

Anyway....all the very best and do let us know how you get on with your search.

Oooh...have you seen this one, Laura on the "Intern Abroad" website for a placement as assistant to a theatre director in Buenos Aires ?
Intern Abroad You will have time to refresh and extend your knowledge of Spanish by the summer, too - so if I were you, I wouldn't limit myself to solely English-speaking placements.

Wishing you all the very best !

Thanks Jeanie! That On The Road company looks promising.
The intern placement looks amazing too! It's just the language thing again - it calls for an 'advanced level' of Spanish.... I'm pretty basic. I know I've got a bit of time but I doubt I'll get that good by summer.
And yep - les mis was me! I've gone a bit more backstage now... producing, directing, tech.. that sort of thing.

cheers!

Personally I know no english-speaking theatre company in BA, but a brief search gave the results listed below. It seems that the group The Performers are in need of actresses because they have published these calls in every site dedicated to employment and partnerships.

I hope this will help. They tour to many other Latin American countries and explicitly offer "Benefits on Tour: Travel, lodging, and food ". A detail: required age is 18 to 30, but I would bet that they will be very interested even if you are older than that. It´s nothing easy to find native English-speaking performers.

Please feel free to contact me for anything you may need before or during your stay in Buenos Aires. In this city you may walk or dine on the sidewalks at any time day or night, buy everything at fantastic prices, eat the world's best beef and drink the best wines, find a warm and educated audience, and fall in love with some tanguero, that´s the catch.

Myself and Alicia my wife will be more than glad to meet you. We are 62 and 57 years old, I sing and Alicia performs in a humor duet.

Best regards / Andrés
