I DO wonder, though, if I might be brave enough to cash in on the HUGE need for lodging for those coming from all over. I gather hotel rooms are essentially gone, and private homes are being rented for up t0 $10,000 or more for the week. It is quite tempting to put up a few folks and make a few $$$$ |

From: Joe Offer I used to enjoy working in downtown Sacramento, because the candidates would usually speak from the steps of the state capitol building. There were also some good rallies there. I got to sing for a labor rally once, doing a solo on the capitol steps in front of a pretty large audience. I also went to a wonderful peace rally there, before we invaded Iraq. The crowds were big, but manageable. Oftentimes, I'd run into people I hadn't seen for years. And it was a thrill to hear well-known people in person. Sure, it would have been easier to see them on television, but there's something wonderful about the energy of an enthusiastic crowd. Would I go to the inaugural? I'm not so sure of that - I think the crowds will be overwhelming, and there's a good chance a lot of the people there will be cold, miserable, and unable to see anything. That's another advantage Sacramento has - the weather. -Joe- |

I would be on my feet for many hours if I went down there. (and who knows what the weather will be in Jan.?) In Nov.,1969, I rode a bus from Kansas for 24 hours to the "March Against Death" in Washington DC. Slept in a church, heard Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie sing from the Lincoln Memorial (though not NEAR close enough to see them), then got back on the bus with the worse backache I ever had and rode 24 hours home. That was my introduction to huge crowds and cold...with pain... I will watch on TV, thank you. I was in my 30s then. |
