Anyone who has been to the Getaway knows that Dan Schatz is one of the best ! He'll be performing at our concert series on November 22nd. Here's the LINK .

I hope some of the 'catters within driving distance of Richmond can make it!

I'm pretty excited about this gig - aside from the fact that Richmond is a great town, and Mary a wonderful promoter, it's going to be especially fun to do a predominantly traditional show. Those of us who are songwriters tend to sing our own songs a lot, because they're there and we'd like them to get heard. It's incredibly freeing to be able to let go of that and sing the music I've always loved and listened to.

This should be fun.

Since Dan will be stopping here on his way to Richmond, I think I'll come along for the show. Looking forward to it!

Well I knew Dan was a good musician but I didn't know HOW good until last night. I'd seen him perform at mini concerts and workshops at the Getaway, and listened to his CD but it's entirely different to experience his music in a concert setting. He put together two wonderful sets, almost all traditional, but he did include a couple of his own songs - "May This Fire Warm You Well" and "Leave Time". There was a great variety of material including Old Timey, spiritual, labor movement songs, blues (with an autoharp!) and ballads, and lots of instruments - a six string and a twelve string guitar, two banjos (one was a fretless gourd banjo) and two autoharps, which he played expertly. He sprinkled humor throughout the evening and charmed the audience. I had several people tell me they were glad they took a chance and turned up for a performer they hadn't heard of before, and received quite a few kudos for booking him! The closing song couldn't have been better chosen - Utah Phillips "Singing Through the Hard Times". It rounded out the evening beautifully. I know Dan has a day job, but I think he could quite easily get on the folk circuit full time if he were so inclined. Well done, Dan!
