I have taken to listening to this web based Folk Music [sic] programme.
I find their definition of folk music to be so wide as to encompass, almost everything recorded at lower decibels.
Don't get me wrong, I quite enjoy listening to it, but if I hear one more Bruce Springsteen cover, I shall spit.
They have redefined eclectic for me !

I haven't listened ot http://www.folkalley.com/ before just now. The first song I hear was Lyle Lovett's "If I Had a Boat" - not traditional folk; but I like the song a lot, and I think it fits the "folk" genre a lot better than some of the self-involved singer-songwriter stuff. And I think Springsteen's acoustic stuff fits in pretty well there, too.

John, are you talking about Springsteen "covers" of folk songs, or about other people doing "covers" of songs written by Springsteen songs?

Don't know if I could listen to this stuff for too long - I prefer my folk music a little more traditional.
Well, wait - now they're playing Nanci Griffith's recording of "Love at the Five and Dime." I love that song.

I listened (for several seconds) a few years ago to Folk Alley. It would appear that their definition stretches to "anyone who once knew someone who had a cousin who once lived next door to someone who once had an acoustic guitar". Nothing (usually) actually wrong with it, but you can hear pop music anywhere.

Just tried (tentatively) again at the link shown above. As Steeleye's New York Girls was currently being played, I'm really exceptionally glad it didn't work.

Oh, I think that might cause me serious gastric distress...
