Nice piece, but what was Chris While on about? Sandy Denny's singing was un-folk ("she made folk cool") because of the ornamentation she used? On that basis Nic Jones was a soul singer!

Nic Jones was a soul singer

I think he was a folk singer

To be honest, I couldn't hear much difference between her two versions. I thought her singing was good, but the second take was just folky-with-decorations. I think she was saying that this was what made Sandy a jazz singer, but I couldn't hear it.

Didn't I read somewhere that Karl Dallas told Sandy early on that she was, or should be, a jazz singer (which she certainly could have been) and that she rejected the idea?

Karl Dallas once told Sandy Denny in an early review that she was on the list of those who shouldn't be allowed to sing Alex Campbell songs. Who knows whether this was what inspired her to write more of her own? This is what she wanted to be: a singer of her own songs, not a "folk" singer, a "jazz" singer or any other sort of label. Nic Jones had much the same aspiration except that he didn't even consider himself much of a "singer", much less a "folk singer". Her performed some folk songs and some composed songs but was "just" as musician (ha!).

I heard the Woman's Hour piece and found it tedious in the extreme. Whatever is the point of Chris While and Bob Harris interviewing each other like foreign correspondents outside a conference venue where nothing is happening?

Whoa, anybody see that $1489.99 price tag on the Amazon.com site (from an independent seller) for the Clinton Heylin biog No More Sad Refrains ? I know it's a good book, but...

Hey - I've got a copy lying around somewhere... hmmm...

Anyone have any idea why this has such an exorbitant price tag? At the bottom (after the plus-shipping-charges) it then has the audacity to say "LOW ITEM PRICE".
