It looks like Mystic is going to need either a co-sponsor or a major donor coming forward to make any sort of dent. The pub sing is a great idea because it will attract interest and help spread the news. |

It is one thing to drive up to Mystic on a June weekend when the weather is warm. It is another thing to do so in the dead of winter when the weather is below freezing and the threat of snow is ever present. They should try something that Falcon Ridge did last year with a few preview performances held by some of the performers in venues located in different parts of the tri-state area. However, if the Museum brass does not appreciate the $$$ plus the positive publicity that the festival brings them, perhaps the organizers should consider moving the festival to another facility that would be more appreciative and supportive. There is a new seaport museum down in Tuckerton, NJ that has been around for the past 5 years and is now developing a sea chantey program in conjunction with a local folk music club. They would be just tickeled pink if they could host a festival with the stature of the one held at Mystic. SOL |

We have an open date at The Borderline, Sunday, April 19th. I would be willing to offer our facilities for that day if some of the musicians who regularly perform at Mystic would be willing to offer their services pro bono. We can have a pre-Mystic festival concert with all the proceeds going towards defraying the festival expenses. Instead of the house venue, I can secure the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps. hall with a 90 person seating capacity. We can even video the entire event for individual sale or public broadcast the proceeds of which would also go towards the cause. Being close to NYC and public transportation, I think that we could draw a respectable crowd. SOL |

Barry, Neil & Charlie are perfect examples of what I am looking for In this particular case, the greater cause (saving the Mystic Festival), is much more important than which particular performers get to play. The times are indeed difficult, but the Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival must be at Mystic, that is what makes it the unique event it has always been. It's a great idea to do satellite festivals to support the June festival, but not to replace it. Just the announcement of a chantey blast in January made our winter! We can't wait to sing with those who can be there. Sometimes we must pare down in all of our budgets...that's just a fact, but the idea of a substitute festival just doesn't make for many of us. At one point there was an idea of chartering a bus or van. Is anyone setting that up? I spoke to someone in D.C. who said it was much too far to go to Connecticut for a few hours. Instead she suggested that people could send the $15 donation, and maybe a bit more that would have gone to travel costs. I suppose people who can't get to CT could get together locally, sing chanteys, and send donations to the festival. |

It (the German Club across the street from the main entrance) wasn't as packed as any festival Friday or Saturday night but it was packed probably somewhere between 125 to 150 people there, could be more, shit it didn't get above frezzing here, it's mid winter (but it was hot inside), someone (no names here) even started to undress in the middle of the floor, they were getting dollar bills stuck in their waist band. Not everyone lead songs (but everyone who wanted to lead did) but I don't think there were any there that wasn't singing, it was infecteous & it was a free for all format. I'm surprized you didn't hear us. It went on from 1:00 in the afternoon till they shut it down at 5:00. 4 hrs of solid shanty singing with gaps long enough to swallow a drink,,,quickly, bing, bang, boom, the bling was flying! Marc Bernier has to be congradulated on his pulling together & pulling off such a wonderfull afternoon event (which BTW pulled in over $2000 for the festival) Great work Marc, he also has to be congradulated on nearly debassing the whole thing (almost) with his rendition of the X rated version (is there a PG version of this?) of the Rollin Pin song, great job again Marc! It promises to be an espically good festival year, I probably won't be performing there but that only means hopefully there'll be much better there than the likes of me, so it'll be well worth anyone attendance, OK, say that isn't saying much, break my heart, go on. It seems that the Thrusday night events will be brought back into the program this year (after missing maybe a couple yrs) & they're adding a Friday symposium, with a Coast Guard aid, along with the usual Saturday morning one, thank you Coasties. They did give out the names of a few of who's gonna be performing (& they're great names) but I'm not the one who should be leaking any of that kind of stuff in public, I'll leave that to thiose that are on the inside. All I can say is that unless I need another organ before June & even if I need a new organ I'm there with a full beating heart. Anyone who attended todays blast will be there too, it was just magicial, I hope that this becomes a mid winter tradition for the festival forecasting, it was much more than just a shot in the arm not only for me, I'm already medicated but for the festival too. It certinally shows great signs of what's to come. I wished you & Rika could've been here. See you in September if not sooner. Barry |

Some 45 people raising the rafters from 7:30 to midnight at the yet-incompletely renovated home of Jane and Paul (but with lights, heat, and a working toilet, if not much else), and providing a fund-raiser for the Mystic Sea Music Festival from afar. --Charlie Baum |

I was so impressed with the organization on the part of Geoff and Marc. It was a pub format but with the chance for everyone to participate if they chose. As someone said to me the real chantey people were there - you could tell because everyone sang every word of every chantey in full voice. So many performers gave their time . Everytime you turned around someone was doing one of your favorites.Lots of traditional fare, some beautiful new harmonies and of course some interesting parodies. There is such hope for a very special festival in June.Please continue to support the effort and thanks to the others in various venues who are raising money for the 30th.What a treat not to have to wait a full year for a real pub sing. Everyone you whanted to hear was there. I must clear one thing up however. I am deserving of no credit whatsoever in the planning and organization of this event. That credit should go to Geoff Kauffman, Megan Weaver, and I believe Bonnie Milner. I rented the room. I'm a member of the club, so renting the room means stopping by a few times, having a few beers, and convincing them that the Seaport are in fact good neighbors. None of those steps qualify me for credit as an organizer. On a side note. I just read on another thread that while we were singing yesterday, one of the great villans of modern folk song, William Zantzinger, Died. It was a good day for a lot of people. |

If this fundraiser does not open a few eyes, I would be very surprised. Lots of attendees, singers and onlookers came in from many hours away from their home ports to be there. Got some great pictures of the participants. Marc, Geoff, Megan, J Girls, Don, Jon, Twins, Heather, Tom et al....you guys and ladies just made it happen......our Gloucester crew enjoyed the entire afternoon and the chance to partake in the event....it could have, in fact, gone on for many more hours. Nice to hear that Thursday's will be back in fashion this year. The hall was filled with many fine folks showing their support for the Mystic Sea Music Festival. Another song worth listening to is on their CD by the same title (Don't Take the Hero's) is Frobisher Bay Here's the story behind the song, the song is on their web site. The folks you heard singing it was Joanne Suza, Dave & his son 19 yr old Colin de la Barre who along with his mother Rose Sheehan (who wasn't there) do woderful harmonies. I think Pete Suza was in there somewhere on the chorus, to gether they're all called "3 Sheets to the Wind" & are just a part of a larger group that's been restoring the Gloucester Schooner the Schooner Adventure. You can also hear them every Tuesday evening in Gloucester, Ma at their evening shanty session held at Cameron's resturant. In 1981 in the late afternoon of December 20th the Union Star travelling from Denmark to Ireland reported engine failure eight miles east of Wolf Rock Lighthouse, south west Cornwall. The weather conditions were treacherous, indeed they were so bad the coxswain of the local RNLI lifeboat the Soloman Browne would only take one member from any one family in the rescue attempt. The winds were coming from the south east at hurricane force 12, gusting to 90 knots with the sea reaching 60ft high. Many of the crew of the Soloman Browne were fishermen and all were from the close-knit fishing community of Mousehole. All lives on both ships were lost. It was reported that one large wave washed the lifeboat onto the decking of the Union Star, the next washed it off again. Coming so close to Christmas many families were left fatherless and the country responded by sending Christmas presents to the bereaved families. This song written by Roz and Neil Kimber is our tribute to the brave men and women who world wide put their own lives at risk to save the lives of others, but especially to the volunteers who serve in the RNLI. Had I been there, I would have rounded out the performing group that is known as "Fivebitter". We all sing with "Three Sheets", the outreach project for the Schooner Adventure here in Gloucester, but prefer to be known as "Fivebitter" when we perform as a smaller ensemble. Here's an excerpt from our group bio: Songs of the sea, ballads and chanteys are the mainstay of "Fivebitter". Peter Souza, Joanne Souza, David de la Barre, Rose Sheehan and Colin de la Barre have spliced together many nautical tunes that represent both new and old music with a wealth of knowledge and talent. The event was a true success and as was already pointed out above that it would be a great Sea Music Festival event kickoff party if done at the same time annually. Joanne does a real fine job on the Heroes song with great supporting harmonies from all others. Can't imagine me ever trying to hit those high notes.....I'd get a hernia! Hey, Tom Goux.....you would not believe it....I received an email from my cousin from Newfoundland when I awoke on Sunday morning...."when are you heading our way"....how ironic after our discussion.
