Folklore: News/Presnell dulcimer for sale

TOday I had a note from a friend Bob Slone, who works for Goodwill Industries, and someone has donated an Ed Presnell dulcimer for sale through their auction. He thinks that it will be sold for very little and perhaps to someone who may not appreciate it. If any of you would like to bid on this (and help Goodwill), here is the URL for the auction:

Good Luck!    Jean

Thanks for letting us know about this auction, Jean. I always forget to check goodwill auctions for items I am looking for. I'll check our finances and see if I might be able to bet on this. I hope whoever gets it appreciates it!

Thanks, Kat- I thought of buying it and putting it on Mudcat's auction but that didn't seem right, somehow. But I'll find something else to auction for Mudcat- we've almost got our L.of C. sorting done now, and there's some interesting (sort-of) things....Jean

As you can see at the goodwill site, there is a crack in back of this dulcimer. That crack is awfully close to the edge, where the back and side come together.

A few years ago, my guitar sustained a crack in a mishap. I called my brother, the instrument expert and asked him what to do. He said, "Here's the main thing. Does the crack go into a GLUED JOINT?"
Well, it didn't, so he told me what to do, and my guitar has been fine ever since.

In the case of this dulcimer, I would not bid on it until I knew whether the crack they show goes through the place where the side is glued to the back.

Also, they want $25 shipping plus $10 'handling.' Two years ago I mailed a dulcimer to my sister (600 miles away) from a commercial shipping place. They charged me only $8 to pad it, box it and ship it to her.

They seem to have the original cardboard box that the dulcimer came in. That is a good sign. It must have been stored indoors (as opposed to a garage, let us say) all these years, or else the box would be in terrible shape.

apparently one can e-mail questions to goodwill during the week, and I would not bid on this without learning more about it.

leeneia, that's not a dulcimer box - that's the sort of box that cheap guitars used to come in. I have one like it in the cupboard!
I would hope they have more substantial packaging when they ship it to whoever.
Still, it looks like a nice instrument apart from the crack.
I have a very similar one but it was made 40 years ago, here in NZ, by Graeme Sandy and cost me $30, complete with a proper solid case.

Well it has generated some interest and rather quickly by the looks of it. I hope it continues and someone who really cares gets it.

'leeneia, that's not a dulcimer box'

Oh, okay.

The point of interest for me is not the box, but the dulcimer, and that it's one of Mr. Presnell's highly regarded instruments, and that Jean Ritchie thought it of sufficient interest to let us know it was available.

I wonder what the usual market price would be for a Presnell dulcimer if you could even fnd one to buy? This is a special dulcimer.

Well, I finally got outbid. My high bid was $202.00. I figured if our Jean was interested, then I would go that high and turn around and sell it off for the Mudcat. But I can't go any higher. At least it will go to someone who knows it value and significance. It surely is worth more than the amount being bid right now. I sure hope they play it and don't use it for a wall hanging. I hate it when an instrument is on a wall and never played.

All the best,

Mick

I hope it will have as good a home as either Big Mick or I would have given it.
