Folk Clubs near Sidney Australia

I am going to Old Bar which is about 3 hours drive from Sidney and I would love to visit some Folk Clubs while I'm there.

I will be there Christmas & New Year and would love to hear any info from our Australian Mudcatters.

Thanks!

Tony.

Not a bad ploy to make the thread title noticed, but Sydneysiders might prefer correct spelling.

The Folk Australia site might help you. They're holidaying but there's a link on that page to clubs and venues.

Cheers, Rowan

Also of use might be http://www.jam.org.au/

You may find some clubs closed down that time of year.

All the Sydney clubs close down over Christmas. The only event I know of is a singing session for 2 visiting UK folkies at a friend's place on Tues 6th Jan.

I was wondering where Old Bar is & according to Google maps it's 315 km north, 4 hours from Sydney. It's about 2.5 hours from Newcastle
but their last concert is 16th Dec. Mudcatter Helen lives in Newcastle & might know if anyone is having a session over the Christmas/New Year period.

However Gulgong Folk Festival is being held 31 Dec-3rd Jan (NOTE - Gulgong is a bloody hot dry place) However, it's about 6 hour drive to Gulgong from Old Bar as the only route is via Newcastle.

I've had a look at The Cornstalk Gazette, the newsletter of the Folk Federation of New South Wales. The friend Sandra mentions is also having a singing session at her place on Sunday afternoon 28 December. If you're around on 4 January, you can go see Alistair Hulett and David Rovics at the Harp Hotel in Tempe (www.theharp.com.au) - Alistair is a Scotsman who used to live in Sydney, David is an American who writes topical songs. That's about it.

Thanks for pointing out the mistake and I would like to apologise to our friends in SYDNEY.

Thanks for the info!

That's OK, cobber.

I hope you have fun. And, while it's further away than Gulgong, Nariel Creek Folk Festival (NE Victoria) is MUCH cooler and the camp is alongside a trout stream.

Happy Christmas!

Cheers, Rowan

I remember one boxing day in the early seventies. We were all sitting around having a few drinks and bewailing what a dead place Melbourne was over the holidays. Someone suggested why don't we go up to Sydney and being young and stupid we all piled into the band truck (which was a Hi-ace van with extra seats bolted in)and off we went. After a few stops, including one where the guitarist drank the water up on the Murray (not the river water, what came out of the tap) and became violently ill almost immediately, we got to Sydney early the next afternoon. We drove round for hours, mostly because we couldn't find a bloody parking spot anywhere, and all the places we knew of were closed - just like Melbourne so we just turned round and went home. It seems not much has changed at holiday time
