I swear the guy must be on a dozen commercials lately. Every time I turn on the TV. I personally never understood the appeal. I always thought he was an Alice Cooper or Frank Zappa wannabe without the talent of Cooper or Zappa. However, that is only my opinion and it is obvious that many people love him for reasons that elude me. But Iron man ... give me a break, 4 chords ... yeeeesh |

Maybe it is me. I just see so much music that is created in the marketing board room and not in the studio. Lesser artist with great marketing skill and somehow everyone goes nuts. Don't get it. Yet in any club or most street corners there are amazing creative musicians that people ignore. But can't blame Ozzie for having a good sales and marketing team. I wish some of the blues folks on the street in New Orleans or some of the folk people had that marketing clout but I am going off thread so I will leave it |

However, calling him an Alice Cooper wannabe is ignoring the fact that his original band, Black Sabbath, was successful a couple of years before Alice Cooper broke through. Vince Furnier created a character and played him for all he was worth. Ozzy Osbourne by all accounts really is as daft as he comes over. Personally I think he is no more than an amiable nutter, but I can think of few people, whom he resembles less than Alice Cooper... Pope Benedict XVI perhaps... |

I've never met Ozzy, but I do know his original manager, the person who first signed him, one of Black Sabbath's drummers, and his original producer and recording engineers, and I have heard countless first hand stories about him. I can report that he really is just what he seems to be. He and his band paid their dues on the live circuit long before Alice Cooper was heard of. (and I won't hear a bad word about him either!) Alice Cooper followed a long tradition of theatrical horror performers, like Screaming Jay Hawkins, Bobby Boris Pickett, Screaming Lord Such etc. Ozzy was just the lead singer in an early heavy metal band. Most of the 'Prince of Darkness' stuff, biting the heads off bats, and the like was mostly accidental- and front men wearing eyeshadow was not unusual at the time. I think the way that Sharon has built Ozzy, and the Osbournes into a marketable brand is astounding. I wish I did know them! Cheers Dave |

As a teenager, I was in a rock band on the Saturday night and doing folk clubs on the Sunday. The links? Playing Paranoid on the Saturday and Fluff on the Sunday.... I remember when the reality TV of their family was on, my son said I should watch this. I said something along the lines of "Isn't that some American reality thing? Sorry, they even nick the name from an old Brummy I used to admire." "Err.. dad, just watch it." I sat there with a permanent grin. It was indeed that old Brummy. A burned out rather tired old Brummie who has problems keeping up with reality. Going to put on my Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album now and see what mood it puts me in... |

The brummie nasal whine and the Texan drawl must be on opposite ends of some scale or other. |

Ozzy is alright, though I'm not a fan of his music. I've only seen a couple commercials with him and I find the text messaging one that's out now to be a riot. I chuckle every time I see it. What scares me a little, though, is that I can pretty much make out what he's saying...but I do transcription for a living so I'm used to garbled talking. :-) |

I recognize the name, of course, and have been aware that the band came into prominence a long time ago, and maintained their popularity for quite a long while. They must have been doing something right, whether it was to my personal taste or not. I really knew nothing about Ozzie until the MTV "reality" show, which my kids urged me to watch. I came to enjoy it more than I would have expected. Sharon is obviously the main promoter and "brains of the outfit." Good for her! I cannot understand a thing that comes out of Ozzie's mouth, but then that's normal, right? That's the point of those text-messaging-phone commercials, which are quite amusing. What's a "Brummie"? I assume that refers to a region of England ~ just where is it, what's the major city, etc.? |

Lots of bands (as pointed out) did that black eye makeup and the darkness stuff. I thought Black Sabbath was a more hard-core than Alice Cooper. Music is NOT a competition. Anyway, about the bat-head-biting-off thing, I hear Ozzie in some interview saying it was supposed to be a prop bat [made out of licorice or some such] and when he realized it was a real bat, he was disgusted. Had to get shots and everything. I watched the show once in a while. Rick Fielding told me about it because he liked it. In any case, people don't get hired do commercials because of their musical talent and skill. Mr Whipple and Mr Clean would never have amounted to anything. |

I can overlook failures in logic unless the subject matter is too stupid, and those commercials are too stupid. For one thing, cave men were called CAVE MEN because they lived in FLIPPIN' CAVES. You get a corporate 'cave man' living in a nice apartment with nice stuff, flying on airplanes, playing tennis and hanging out in the 21st century version of a fern bar. This is NOT a CAVE man. On top of that, he's not supposed to be lacking in intelligence (and he's got way more STUFF than me anyway) and acts hurt when lower intelligence is referred to, which pretty much proves... well, if it doesn't prove he's not smart, he sure comes off whiny. I would imagine that ferns were part of a typical cave back in the good old days and most cave men would want nice things in their caves. Soon every cave person probably had a set of wheels in the front yard and I would bet even back then that cave men judged people based on the size of their wheel. |

Did space aliens borrow them for a while? The attitudes of those guys in the commercials could be explained by prolonged, repeat anal probes, so maybe that theory has some merit. Now, the Grateful Dead, that's something else again entirely. A friend's father had a suite in a NYC hotel and we stayed there. I got to see Washington Square Park and some bar close to it where we had a drink, got to ride the subway and had to stay at my friend's house a day later than intended because the stupid ferry was at a stupid birthday thing for the Brooklyn Bridge. |

My brother, Leigh, gets up from the table, where we were sat with Mum and Dad. He disappears into the other bar for a short while, then comes back, sits down and winks at me. I start to get worried, and look around at 'the locals' in their farmer's hats and coats enjoying their pints of local brew... ...when all of a sudden.....at 30,000 decibels, from the small jukebox in the bar next door.............. !!!!!!!!! And everyone froze, apart from Leigh, who spluttered into the bubbles of his Coca-cola, while his horrified parents stared at the seagulls who'd come to investigate the noise..and 'the locals' growled about "they bloody 'emmits and grockles!" I'm still recovering from a Lynard Skynard concert in about 1972...front row, in front of the speakers... Eek! I like those words, Dan. Pretty. HOW does Ozzie put up with Sharon? I can still recall the horror on Seth Lakeman's face when she lunged for him on TV one day, and gave him the biggest smacker of a kiss on the lips. Poor Seth, he was left reeling, for all the wrong reasons. LOL. Apparently, Kelly Osbourne is the Agony Aunt for Radio 1. Oooookkkkkkkkkkay |

Saw Black Sabbath, but with a different lead singer. Saw Pink Floyd with Mountain, saw the Allman Bros, the Beach Boys, Crosby, Stills & Nash (then Crosby & Nash and Stephen Stills with--what the heck was his band's name), Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Queen, Willie Nelson, Billy Idol (opened for Queen), Jethro Tull, the Eagles, Heart, Rush, Pete Seeger with Arlo Guthrie, John Denver, Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, the Moody Blues, Canned Heat, Iron Maiden and some others. But I have never seen Ozzie. |

In the fandom world, I go all the way back to seeing Buffalo Springfield in concert. For me, they were like the Grateful Dead. No journey too long to see Buffalo Springfield live. The things they would do with arrangement, and dual leads, and folk influence, and instrumentation...... wow. Then came CSN & sometimes Y. Yeah, Bobster, I agree on Southern Cross. 07 Dec 08 - 05:15 PM (#2509754) Subject: RE: Review: ozzie osbourne TV commercials From: joejay i don't watch tv, personally i don't like to be sold commercials, it's aimed to such a low mentality, but i happen to love ozzie, he's a survivor, i've seen him live a number of times in the 70's with sabbath, and i find that he is intelligentas well as poetic in his lyrics, i doubt if you ever really had or listened to the first five sabbath albums, they are amazing gems that are credited with the formulation of the genre "heavy metal". they have been oft imitated, but never duplicated. i've also seen zappa many many times, and seen alice cooper live as well, as well as having many of their albums. they are completely different entities, and please don't believe everything you hear about these consumate showmen as well as businessmen. all three of these acts were there re-writing the book of what performance and studio work was all about. i know many many people who never "got" sabbath, and actually hated them, much in the way that another of my favorite bands, the grateful dead, were much maligned for being yokey country rock. that was just one blip in their long and storied career, but since you rarely hear or heard anything but 'truckin' on the bullshit so-called rock radio stations, opinions were formulated based on limited exposure, much as yours seems to be on 'iron man'. i have to admit that i was a heavy user of recreational drugs at the time of my original exposure to all this music, but now that i'm also what some folks might consider an 'old man' ( i'm 52) i still love all that stuff but also much other music that has come along since then. many of my generation don't understand that our generations music wasn't the only good music, we confused the newness of it and have thumbed our nose often at the best that the next few generations have offered, the good stuff is out there if you're willing to look, but sadly, most folks that i know would rather just sit in front of a tv, which leads us back to ozzie's commercial's. i wish him well, that fucked up out of his mind guy who gave us more than we would have had had he never surfaced on the scene. peace |

I hated most of that music, especially disco and thought to myself that things were never gonna be right again and then I heard Tesla, and Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam and got reinspired... I mean, I was down to not even precticing but a hour a week...Just enough to keep calloses on the fingers so when I started hearin' the garage.grunge bands on the radio it woke me the heck up... And thsoe groups, while never fillin' in for Sabboth, Humble Pie, AC/DC, etc., were a welcome sight... It was like the calvary coming to reinforce us against stupid music... Now I'm practicing fir hours every week and gone back to doin' a couple three gigs a month and I'm rowdier than I ever been an' I got you by several years... Like I said, long live Ozzy and long live headbangin'... B~ |
