Lyr. Add: OH! HAD I WINGS LIKE A DOVE
Composed by Charles Jeffreys

1
Oh! Had I wings like a dove, I would fly
Away from this world of care;
My soul would mount to the realms on high,
And seek for a refuge there;
But is there no haven of rest on earth,
No hope for the wounded breast,
No favor'd spot where content has birth,
In which I may find a rest.
2
Oh! Is it not written, Believe and live,
The heart by bright hopes allured,
Shall find the comfort these words can give,
And be by its faith assured;
Then why should we fear the cold world's frown,
When truth to the heart has given,
The light of religion to guide us on,
In joy to the paths of heaven.
3
There is! there is! in thy holy word,
The word which can never part;
There is a promise of mercy stored,
For the lowly and meek of heart;
My yoke is easy, my burden light,
Then come unto me for rest;
These, these are the words of promise stored,
For the wounded and weary breast.

There are several songs about wings of a dove, angel, swallow; how they may be related, if at all, is often unclear. The first two lines of this "Sacred Piece" are from psalm 55.6. The song "Ecstasy," Sacred Harp, may be related.
P. 70, with musical score, L. O. Emerson, 1857, "Golden Wreath: A Choice Collection of Favorite Melodies," Oliver Ditson & Co., Boston.
Sheet music, undated, in Indiana University Coll., published by G. P. Reed, Boston.

Probably better known is the Mendelssohn version

Hear My Prayer (German: Hör' mein Bitten) is a Christian anthem for soprano, chorus and organ or orchestra (SATB) written by Felix Mendelssohn in Germany in 1844. The hymn is well known for the passage O for the Wings of a Dove (O könnt' ich fliegen). (Wikipaedia)
