From: Bill D I have posted at various times about how to find and view and save...etc... files from deep in your browsers' cache(s). Now I find a site with simple little programs (for Windows) to make this easier. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/index.html They have many, many free utilities which some of you may be interested in, but right now I am just referring to VideoCacheView v1.35 WebVideoCap v1.33 MozillaCacheView v1.15 OperaCacheView v1.11 IECacheView v1.20 - Internet Explorer Cache Viewer (there are cookie viewers, too) These programs allow you to see what's there, move and/or save the items, play videos using default player, and more. In some cases YOU will have to define the proper locations for caches...(I do, 'cause I moved some from the defaults)...but they look first at the default locations. It looks to me as if these could be quite useful for some folks.... Yes...even to see if the kids have been looking at stuff they promised to avoid.. :>)) |

From: JohnInKansas In any Windows version, if you've "lost" your Temporary files, open a command prompt: Start | Run, type cmd and hit Enter in older versions. In Vista, you should go to Start|Programs|Accessories and find "Command Prompt" and put an icon for it on the desktop, since for some things you'll need to "run as administrator." It takes an extended command at Start|Run to do that, but if you have an icon you can right-click the icon (or the program name in Start|Programs|Accessories list) then and choose "run as administrator" from a list when necessary. In any versions, in the command window, type SET and hit enter. In the list that appears, you will find TEMP=C:\bunchastuff and also TMP=C:\bunchajunk. These are the locations of your "temp" files. One or the other will be "Temporary Internet Files" with the remaining one being the "scratch space" the computer uses for temporary stuff. Oten they'll be the same location. You can then use Windows Explorer to go to whichever is appropriate. (You may need to turn on the view hidden and system files to see them.) Much Easier: In IE, just click Tools|Internet Options. On the General tab in the section called "Browsing History" click the Settings Button and then click View Files. You will see all of your Temporary Internet Files. You can copy from there to put any of them anywhere you want. Note that the temp files usually will be listed in the order they were entered, so if you're trying to "capture" something you've just seen on the web it will probably be near the bottom of the list. Closing your browser should delete lots of the temp stuff, so you need to go there before you close if you're working on a "difficult acquisition." John |

From: JohnInKansas Jack C - It does work that way in Internet Explorer, or in Windows Explorer which is essentially the same program. (You can go to a folder on your own computer by putting its address in the URL space in Internet Explorer.) The only difficulty is that you have to remember the URL to type it in, and "spell it" correctly; and in Windows the browser "Temporary Internet Files" is buried fairly deeply in the tree in a place you're not likely to visit frequently enough to remember it all. The Command Prompt SET command typically shows something like: TEMP=C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp Each user account has a separate Temp location for the browsing that user does. The methods I described amount to the same thing, but use Windows Explorer directly to display the files. Clicking the "View Files" in Internet Explorer just opens a Windows Explorer view that lists them. You should be able to do essentially the same thing in any browser. John |

From: Bill D Yes, you 'can' view (as I note above) the cache in almost any (maybe all) browsers...but what you can easily DO once you get there is sometimes pretty limited. Before I found these programs, I used a couple of really user-friendly file managers to access the cache and its files, and moved and deleted and copied what I wanted. Even then, it was often tricky. And....a little known and certainly not publicized item is that, IF you have browsers other than Internet Explorer, their caches and temp files are indexed and/or saved by Windows in I.E.s temp folders! That is, even if you tell Opera or Firefox to clear downloaded files each day, the records of what and when you accessed various internet sites may still be kept in IE/Windows temp folder! It takes some work to change this behavior....I'll post some details if anyone really wants..(I 'think' I already did a few months ago...I'll look) Anyway, any help in being aware of cache contents and how to access them and/or manage them is welcome to those who care to bother... |
