Yet Another Digital Tradition Page Back!!!

Subject: Digital Traditon Page Unavailable?
From: Nick E

This page...
http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/
has been up for years, and is not available now. It was/is a mirror site of the Mudcat Digital Tradition.
I know it is not affilitaed with mudcat but had most of the songs in the data base and had among other things whistle tabs. I wonder if anyone knows anything about it's status. Each year I have printed out Christmas tunes, and at some point later would throw the printed pages away!
I should know the tunes by now but dont, and the season is upon us.
Any ideas or input?
Nick

You can search the digitrad here. Try @CHRISTMAS. They might not have whistle tab, but some do have music with them.

It's not just the DigiTrad mirror, but the whole of www.numachi.com that seems to have gone off the air. Google has an archived copy from December 7 here. fwiw...

Of course it may be a temporary situation and it may all be fixed and back up in a few hours or days, but who knows? There have been a few times when the Mudcat itself has gone down in almost as total a way.

Oh, a brief glimmer of hope there Haruo, unfortunately the only thing archived was that first page, I tried to look up one of the songs and get the same Page Not Found Error Message.

Does anyone have whistle tabs archived for Christmas tunes?

The first place to try for lost web sites is a place called the Internet Archive. The have a thing called The Wayback Machine. You post the web address into the machine and it brings up a list of dates where there is an archive copy of the web site.
In some cases the full content of a web site for that specific date can be found, sometimes it is a partial copy. Sometimes a web site stores its data in a different location accessed via a script on the actual web site. In this case, the actual data may not be in the archive, but it is worth a try.

If you just want traditional tunes and words (dots or MIDI) a site worth visiting is folkinfo.org, Jon Freeman's site, which has a collection of folk songs smaller than the Digitrad, but with printable music and the option of transposing the tunes into different musical keys.

Quack!
GtD.

Nick - I don't have the whistle tabs, but I can probably make them for you (I have my own abc version of the DT and I can use abcm2ps to generate whistle tab from the songs with 'Xmas' keyword). Do you want the lyrics included or just the tunes?

Nick, if you know the precise URL of a particular page, you can see the archived copy via Google the same as I did with the index page, e.g. here's A-Begging I Will Go which I got to by putting its URL into Google and then clicking on the "Cached" link. But I'm not sure how far this will get you with MIDI files and other things that are not in some sort of HTML-like format.

The Yet Another Digital Tradition page produces musical notation or tab for DT tunes "on the fly." That means that Google and Archive.org might not be able to produce DT notation.

Jon Freeman had an experimental copy of the Digital Tradition he was working on. It was at this address:
http://home.folkinfo.org/dtdatabase/
But it doesn't seem to be working now.

I'll contact him and see if he can drop by and give us some help.

Ah, now I remember! look for Traditional and Christmas music at the home page of

http://www.8notes.com/

They have "Sheet Music" for the entire Digital Tradition.

My attempt is at http://www.folkinfo.org/dtdatabase1/ I think the address Joe has was an earlier version without some searches.

It does not use the latest version of the dt and it's unlikely I'll update it in the future.

Haruo, did you ever find "Girls Don't Fart?" If not, write to me and I will send it to you. After all, I wrote, performed and recorded it. : ) Andrew (awespishus@gmail.com)

Yet Another Digital Tradition is working again. Not to worry.

The URL in the first message works, but this one is easier:
