Lyr Req: Herald of Free Enterprise (Robb Johnson)

Subject: Herald of Free Enterprise - lyrics wanted
From: Tony Fry

Roy Bailey performs a song called "The Herald of Free Enterprise" about the Zeebrugge ferry disaster. The chorus goes "The ship we sail, and the flag she flies, it is the Herald of Free Enterprise". Could anybody post the lyrics please (and the name of the author).

Thanks very much,

Tony Fry

Herald of Free Enterprise
(Robb Johnson)

The sun goes down now 'cross the sea
We're homeward bound now, and on the duty-free
The harbour's quiet and the kids asleep
Tired out from Europe on the cheap

There are no poor now, we all have cars
They're parked down below now, we took off the stars
On television, if not the sky
The ocean moves us, we don't ask why

We feel the ship slip out from the land
We're pleased our trip went just like we planned
We see the lights along the shore
Not the overworked crew, not the open door

And in the cruel dark sea our lives go down
In Zeebrugge Harbour all night we drown
Now the owners grow old while we all die young
With the blue murder stuck in our lungs

'Cause the ship we sail, and the flag she flies
It is the Herald of Free Enterprise
Yes the ship we sail, and the flag she flies
It is the Herald of Free Enterprise

And they can salvage our ship up from the bottom of the sea
Recycle pop stars to sing Let it be
Sell lorries for scrap, whitewash the company
But they can make no more money out of me

And each life lost, much loved, much missed
And all of our lives're on some passenger list
It's too late for 'Mayday', you sink too fast
When profits come first and people's losses come last

And the ship we sail, and the flag she flies
It is the Herald of Free Enterprise
Yes the ship we sail, and the flag she flies
It is the Herald of Free Enterprise

(as sung by Roy Bailey)

No, I don't think so. Whereever I found it had breaks between the verses. I don't see them in your page, Suzanne.

??? Must be your browser! It looks all right in mine.
Anyway, it's one of the most chilling songs I know. I love going to Britain by boat, but this made me think twice.

If I remember correctly, the above was written by Robb Johnson, (a left wing songwriter here in England)
Another brilliant song on the same subject was written by Jim Boyes, (of Coope Boyes and Simpson) and appeared in the early 90's on the No Masters Co-operative sampler NMV.

Chorus
Rest easy, won't you lie easy
Though you drowned so near the sure
Rest easy, won't you lie easy
You'rs suffering now is o'er

Regards Ralphie

Ralphie, would you mind posting the whole song? The verse you quote sounds interesting, but so far totally devoid of Robb Johnson's cold anger.

My Pleasure

Verse 1

Ship set sail, Loaded down
In a hurry, to make the turn around
Weary faces, Tired crew
Names and places, I don't need to tell to you

Verse 2

Overloaded, Undermanned
Cutting corners, efficiency out of hand
Slack procedures, Undrawn lines
Free and easy, Touches of the times

Chorus

Rest easy, won't you lie easy
Though you drowned so near the shore
Rest easy, won't you lie easy
Your suffering now is o'er

Verse 3

Ship at sea, Comes the storm
The hatch won't batten, the plates are old and worn
The captain's dunk, the crew untrained
The engine's failing, The cargo is unrestrained

Verse 4

Leaking badly, The end is nigh
Listing madly, The owners are high and dry
Built for profit, Maintained for gain
Shady traders, who hide beneath flags of shame

Chorus (2)

Rest easy, won't you lie easy
Though you drowned so near the shore
Rest easy, won't you lie easy
Your suffering now is o'er

Mid 8

But, Oh in the night how you toss and turn
Oh, how the the cold winds roar
Oh, how we fight for the tide to turn
And even up the score

Repeat Chorus 1 & 2 as required.

I had the pleasure of recording Jim's demo at the session for the album.....It still moves me

Thanks, Ralphie! How come that most of the best songs I know are about disasters?

But seriously, Susanne...
It is the disasters that happen to all of us, both big and small, that invoke a need to express ourselves, in lots of cases through songs.
Long may this continue. The world would be all the poorer if we stopped.
Ralphie...feeling a little melancholy...

Don't blame you! Not much to feel happy about just now ... On the other hand, I doubt I'd be a folkie if all that folk songs dealt in were happy lovers, facile rhymes, and cheap clichés!

Ralphie - are you sure that this was aimed at "toytown ferries" ?

Another brilliant song on the same subject was written by Jim Boyes, (of Coope Boyes and Simpson) and appeared in the early 90's on the No Masters Co-operative sampler NMV

Whilst the content of some of the Verses fits the "Herald Disater" It reads to me more like a general rant against cost cutting owners, coffin ships, and flags of convenience - and all of it is true.

The "Herald of FE", at the time of her loss was flying the Red Duster - not a flag of convenience.

Interesting point. I'd have to get in touch with Jim to check....But, even if the flag was wrong. The rest of the story rings true to me....I'll let you know what I find.
Still a bloody good song IMHO !!

Ralphie concur - excellent song. And unfortunately still accurate.

Question - date and narrative might also fit the "Bowbelle/Marchioness" collision.

There is a saying in the Marine Insurance trade - "The crew of a Flag of Convenience ship is two men, and a Dog - The Dog is the only one with a watchkeeping ticket !"

Gareth.

BTW The "Marchioness" was a Dunkirk Boat - she deserved a better fate than that.

Ralphie - well documented, both the Marchioness and her siter Thames cruiser the Duchess made many runs between the beaches and the transports off shore. They had a shallow enough draught to get close in to the beaches. Both made it back to Ramsgate packed with solidiers on board.

I notice no one has given a TITLE for the song by Jim Boyes above. It'll never get into DigiTrad without some sort of title, and I'd rather use the title the author wanted.

It's amazing how often this happens, that somebody posts song lyrics without giving a title. Maybe that's why so many song are known by more than one title.

Nice to see this thread back again !
Jims title for the above song was "Enterprise"
Absolutlely right, I should have made that clearer...
Mea Culpa !

Er ... G'day,

I'm glad you revived this thread after I set off on my holiday to Tasmania this February ... sailing the Bass Strait, both ways, on the "Spirit of Tasmania" ... a sister ship to the "Herald of Free Enterprise".

A mechanical problem on my Sydney - Melbourne leg meant that I sailed one trip later - with the car held up on "stand-by" until the last minute. I parked just inside the stern loading ramps ... and made damned sure they locked and sealed them! ("Charley Noble" suggests this may have robbed him of the chance to write a great new maritime disaster song ... but No Thanks!

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Is this thread still going? Not sure.
Anyway, did anyone see the Coope Boyes and Simpson event last night transmitted via zoom for the Oxford Folk festival? Jim sang Enterprise and it was extremely moving. Never heard it before, hence the research today and finding this discussion thread.
All the best everyone
