fRoots in London

I confess. I gave up buying fRoots on a monthly basis some years back, and only get it when there's something I think interesting in it - or when it has its 'free' CD.

I tried this month. It wasn't easy. Is there any place in London apart from the two Zavvi superstores and Ray's Jazz Cafe at Foyles where it can be bought? I was shocked to find even the bigger branches of WH Smith's no longer stock it.

The only WH Smith I can usually find it in is at Victoria Station.

Borders also stock it.

fRoots directly supplies Ray's @ Foyles, Hobgoblin in Rathbone Place & Stern's. Via news trade distribution copies go to main railway stations, branches of Borders & HMV and random (i.e. I don't know which) newsagents including some W H Smiths. NOT Zavvi right this moment because they were supplied exclusively by EUK, the distribution wing of Woolworths who are now in administration - and this may have affected some other outlets too. Hopefully that will resolve as they find alternative suppliers.
ANY newsagent can order it through the distributors Seymour but NB this issue tends to sell out very fast in shops because of CD and end-of-year content. Also single copies are always available from the fRoots web site at no charge for postage, even if people don't want to subscribe. Trehantiri are also suppliers.

....And if you want an opinion, 'fRoots' remains outstandingly the best-written, best-designed, most informed and up to date of all the magazines that cover British traditional and folk music as part of their remit.

thats your opinion,I think Living tradition is a better magazine, and covers BRITISH TRADITIONAL MUSIC in a more comprehensive, and better informed manner.

The new one is another good mag, terrific CD, a most pertinent editorial and lots of interesting features including yours on the great Reg Hall, Vic. I subscribe so I've had mine since last Saturday and still haven't finished it yet.

Thank you - and Reg is a great man, indeed. Anyone who would like to read some thing more about Reg may like to know that his lovely book about the life and times of Scan Tester, I Never Played To Many Posh Dances is now on-line on the Musical Traditions website at
http://www.mustrad.org.uk/articles/r_hall.htm

Also on the Musical Traditions website is a full transcript of a radio interview that I did with Reg Hall On 30th October 1990 about I Never Played To Many Posh Dances when it was first published. This includes in full, sound clips of the eight tracks of Scan's playing that were included in the programmes. This is at http://www.mustrad.org.uk/articles/tester2.htm

I shall be including some tunes and dances learned from Scan Tester when I call and play with The Sussex Pistols for the huge (600+ ) Brighton Midwinter Ceilidh at the Corn Exchange tonight.
