Obit: Richard Wastling (24 Dec 2008)

20 Dec 08 - 03:42 PM (#2520848)
Subject: Richard Wastling in Hospital
From: GUEST,Pete Fletcher

Those of you who know Richard will remember that he was unwell last year just before Christmas. Earlier this week he was again admitted to hospital with increasingly severe symptoms.
It turns out that cancer has spread from in his kidneys to his liver and lungs. His condition is not operable but they are giving him dialasis.
His life expectancy is now measured in days or weeks - a few months at the outside.
I'm sorry to have to pass this news on but Richard has asked me to let people know. He is staying fairly positive given the circumstances.
He is in Ward 5 at Hull Royal Infirmary at the moment.

I have to say that I think this is sad news indeed I have always found Richard to be one of the nicest people on the Folk Sean. The only good thing is that when we meet again on the road Richard will have organized a bloody good session, of that I have no doubt. All the best to you Richard and your Family.

That's very sad - he's a lovely bloke, and even though I dont see him that often,he's always a good friend. The last time we met was at the Beverley folk club in the summer. He told me how bad his health was - but still seemed surprisingly cheerful.I hope he can be serene through his illness.

Visited Richard yesterday at 6pm. He retains his sense of humour and timing. His daughter Lisa was there in a long ivory gown, having married Lee Robinson at 1pm in Beverley, with Jean in attendance. (all done at short notice). "Well, here's to you Mrs Robinson".. had already been sung.. and Richard saw the videop/photo clips of the ceremony.
I mentioned the Mudcat thread and he and Jean were delighted to hear of these mesages.
Best wishes

Over the last couple of days Richard developed pneumonia to add to all his other problems.
He died on the evening of Christmas Eve.
He passed away peacefully with Jean and Lisa at his bedside.

Lisa was planning to marry in June this year, but managed to rearrange the ceremony and tied the knot on Tuesday.
This gave Richard some comfort during his last days.

The whole folk community in and around Hull will miss him more than words can say.

Please, find a moment to raise a glass to Richard over the festive period.

Richard meant so much to us all - at the Folk Club, in our Ceilidh Band and at the Folk Festival as well. He was one of my longest term friends. I knew him all the time I have been in East Yorkshire and we were always in touch re one thing or another. I will miss him a great deal. We will hold a Special place for him in the 2009 folk festival. We had only been discussing a few days before how to incorporate the folk club more - now we have an even greater reason to do so. Let's work on it so that his memory lives on in the festival that he was so important in creating and helping to thrive.

I'm with Steve on Franklin, and Lloyd George. Rich was always generous with his time and his knowledge and taught me a lot of songs which I still sing. Of course ,in the folk club unwritten rules of those days,I didn't sing any of them at Beverley because they were "his" songs....though I remember that whoever was first on in the evening managed to snaffle "The Recruited Collier"
These days I can't sing "Rose of Allandale" without thinking of him.

Personally one of my favourite songs he did was "Her father didn't like me anyway", and I always looked forward to all of his performances, and indeed just chatting with him.

I've started a new thread but no harm in leaving this here as well.

Richard's funeral has been arranged for Wednesday 7th January. 15.00 hrs at Haltemprice Crematorium.
Afterwards at Hodgeson's in Beverley (that's the pub just next to the festival campsite)

The Crematorium is on Main Street Willerby. The entrance is signed from the A164 Beverley - Willerby road just south of the Castle Hill Hospital complex.

Very sad news indeed, he was a man I always looked forward to seeing whenever I played Beverley. We had a bit of a tradition going in that whenever I did the Slipjigs&Reels, he would join me on guitar, the last time was June, he was a bit disconcerted that I hadn't told him earlier that I'd changed the key, but he coped admirably - I shall miss him.
Love And best wishes to Jean and Lisa.

I was too upset to write anything on this last week, and didn't have a clue what to say.

Richard was a huge influence on me, and became a good friend. I made my first tentative outing to the White Horse Folk club about 15 years ago, having never played my guitar outside my bedroom, and having no knowledge of folk music. Richard made me feel welcome (along with the other regulars), and he effectively became my mentor, teaching me different tunings to work with, steering me to listen to Nick Jones, Dave Burland, and assorted others that had influenced him over the years. He taught me how to accompany tunes in a sensible fashion.

Without him I would not have ventured to other folk clubs, or met all the musicians and friends I have over the years. Freewheeling would never have happened, Punch The Horse, and indeed my current band Viagra Falls who I met originally at a Sun Inn Session at the Beverley Folk Festival. In short, I would still be Billy no Mates in my bedroom.

I feel I have Richard to personally thank for all of this, and for being possibly the kindest, gentlest, and most entertaining friend I have ever met.

Thank you, Richard Wastling. You will be very sorely missed by me, and by the many other people whose lives you have touched over the years, not least Jean and Lisa, who I hope to keep in touch with.

I'll be there for that great session in the sky. You get first song.

Pete Dean.

Well it looks as though I will be able to make Richards funeral.
