Here's a link to a this year's holiday greeting card that JudyB and I put together for our friends on the Mudcat Forum and other virtual realities: Click here for a good time!

Now it's back to making notes on the hard copy.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble and JudyB

Beautiful thought, Charlie and Judy.

I once had the privilege of watching a pair of eagles teach a teenager to fish. Momma flew directly over my head with her wings outspread and put the fear of god into me. Baby upchucked about 40 lbs of vomit on my car where it froze in place. You had to see the look on the attendant's face at the carwash. I tried to explain that an eagle vomited on my car and he just nodded and gave me that "Don't make eye contact" look.

Sinsull-

Now that would make an interesting image for a card! Did you take a picture?

All the seasons best to you and yours Charley! Here on Cape Breton Island we have one of Notth America's largest bald eagle populations. They are majestic birds!

Very nice, Charley and Judy! Unfortunately, eagles are quite rare here in Quebec. Thanks!

It's interesting to learn that while some eagles migrate with the season, the ones in Maine are resident year-round. One wonders how they are programed! Well, abundant food in the form of fish has something to do with it.

Our resident eagles lay their eggs in early March, so it's not unusual that when they hatch they experience one of those late winter snow storms. And then you get to see in the morning the parent covered with snow brooding the eggs, then shaking it all off with her wings, while waiting for her mate to bring her breakfast or to relieve her at the nest so she can go off for take-out.

Charley Noble

It's amazing to me how involved Judy has become this year in watching the eagle cams all over the world, and assuming major responsibility as an administrator on the Hancock Wildlife Forum in British Columbia, thousands of miles away from the coast of Maine. I don't chat "eagle" on her forum but she does show me some beautiful images and keep me up to date with some incredible stories. Be aware that watching eagles, ospreys, and other raptors can be addictive!

Mudcat is bad enough!

Charley Noble

Ranger1-

No, we haven't been tracking any eagles in our hometown of Richmond. We do see one pair regularly when we go boating in Robinhood Cove, down on Georgetown Island, and lots of ospreys. There's an osprey nest overlooking the little cove where we keep our boat and we may even set up our own webcam there next year.

One of the eagle rescues I heard about this year involved two half-grown eaglets in a nest in California. They were divebombed by an adolescent eagle, knocking one out of the nest while people were viewing; a half hour later the second was knocked out of the nest. Observers were able to trigger an emergency response and a local wildlife team was at the site within an hour and brought both injured eaglets back to a rehabilitation facility; one had a badly injured beak and the other had a fractured wing. Both recovered and were later released. But be aware that sometimes the outcome is more tragic, and that's part of Nature as well.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
