A very wise man once said "The umbilicus is the centre of the universe"
Keep that in mind, next time you use it to put the salt in, when you're eating chips [freedom fries] in bed, and watching TV.

Having had the frightening experience of finding a Q-tip swab crammed into my belly button and thinking it was a hernia - I find this thread anything but humorous.
I am deeply offended. Almost as deeply as that nasty cotton was jammed in my middle.

Can we have some historical background on bellybuttons?

Other animals apparently don't have them. (Are there animals that have bellybuttons?)
When did humans get theirs?
Do mummies have bellybuttons?

I''ve just checked, I don't have any 'fluff'... :0(

This must mean that I can't celebrate Belly Button Fluff Day! :0( :0(

I think this Celebration is a bit Fluffist, Meg. ;0)

Do NOT read this before eating your turkey, or nut roast...because if you do, you'll never get round to the trifle..

Thanks fir this thread, Meg-L, 'cause I have been negligent... I have gone months without payin' attention to my b-b-fluff an' that's a bad thing... Back when I was a young man with long dark hair me and fluff was tight... I mean, tight... Tight as tree bark tight... Tight as a mouse's ear tight...

But, sniff... Fluff and I have drifted apart...

(This is so difficult...)

But, Hark!!! It's Christmas and so I figured that it was time for me and Fluff to get back what we had and so...

...for 2009 I am going to put more effort into our relationship... No Q-Tips here... No ma'am... 'Er Sir, too... I'll be a changed man... You'll see...

And to think that I'd been contimplating selling Fluff on ebay??? Oh, the shame...

The teensy people who live in mine are partying again, and they will not say which holiday they are doing (it's none of my business as long as they're not driving drunk).

Sorry, Susan, but the navel inhabitants are not human, and they weren't partying. They were plotting your downfall by driving you bonkers.

Not that I want to make you paranoid or anything.

All mammals have bellybuttons, but they are usually (1) small, and (2) covered with fur.

BBFluff may be a human only thing, though.

Right, Bee..mammals have a spot that marks where they were hooked in their gunksack--but I don't know of any that end up with the option of inny/outy.
Other animals have a scar where we have a noticeable feature.

Maybe my question is whether anybody knows when humans figured out how to tie/clamp the umbilical.

Becca--How did your friend/acquaintance come to be bellybuttonless?

Toy gorillas have a bellybutton..do real ones?

A real gorilla is a mammal so yes, they have belly buttons. I'm pretty sure King Kong had one. Being a semi nekkid ape, I suspect it's more visible than others but not having my brother in law here to hand, I can't check (he's known as 'Silverback' to certain circles...)

I guess Belly Button Fluff is a guy thing because I've never had it... even when I wore jeans or a fluffy shirt... no fluff.

I am bereft of fluff, and therefore unable to celebrate with you..

So now we have Innies and Outies, Fluffies and Baldies... I'm an Innie Baldie, what are you?

Message:
All placental mammals have navels, which are simply scars left at the site where the umbilical cord was attached to the body. While the point is subject to much debate, there is evidence that several other amniotes hatch from their eggs still attached to their egg blood vessels through an allantoic stalk homologous to the umbilical cord. Hence, birds and reptiles may be considered to have "navels" (or at least something homologous to a navel) as well.

this is the only kind of info I can find online..I don't have a question about navels--I am curious about the things we call bellybuttons. I want to know when/why humans started knowing to make their babies have them.

(forgot to thank you for links, Bee. Thanks!)

Melissa,

My friend had gastric bypass a half dozen years ago and last summer had an abdominoplasty where they removed the excess skin from her weight loss. When they took the skin off they cut out a section and basically pulled up what was left (like hiking up your pants). The section they cut out had her bellybutton in it. Now she makes bar bets with people that she doesn't have one. LOL.

A friend's baby was born with some of her bowels exposed. After the surgeries, she had no belly button.
