She was the epitome of a sexy lady, wasn't she. A very beautiful sexy lady, with a voice that literally purrrrrrrred and eyes that twinkled and sparkled with naughtiness and mischief. I'd imagine that most men would have been rendered utterly helpless by her within seconds.

Strangely, she was on our TV over here tonight, on the pre-recorded Torvill & Dean 'Dancing on Ice' Christmas Special, and one couple danced to that very track of Eartha's, bobad. It made me stop and listen, because she had such a distinctive voice, and I've not heard her for many a year. Instantly, memories of her came flooding back....and now, I've just seen this thread..

She gave us all much of her magic for many years.

Thanks, Azizi. Great choice of songs. Great woman, wonderful singer. And 81 years old, so she lived a good long life, too.

MSNBC has a fairly nice obituary:

Singer-actress Eartha Kitt dies at 81

The video link at the same page is to a newscast that seemed like sort of a rushed job, but the text article gave some background of which I wasn only vaguely aware.

Lovely, and loved. She will be remembered.

George Sanders described her as "The sexiest woman on the planet".
She herself said "Many men have wanted to lay me down, but none offered me a hand up!"
I've loved her singing for what seems most of my life.
RIP a wonderful human being, a survivor!

I met her briefly when I was getting on a plane in New York City a few years ago. I was standing in the slow moving line in the aisle in first class, and, ever the English major, had commented to the man in the aisle seat about the interesting book he was reading, not your run-of-the-mill airport bookstore book. It was only after we exchanged a few words that I looked past him and saw her smiling. She did not look like a woman in her late 70s, not at all! And I didn't get a "star" vibration from her at all, either; quite the contrary, she seemed genuinely interested that someone was speaking to her companion about his reading material. I realized who she was and smiled and moved on--I wish I'd had the presence of mind to take just a moment more and tell her that I really respected her work and how she lived her life. Very interesting woman.

"I'm an orphan. But the public has adopted me and that has been my only family," she told the Post online. "The biggest family in the world is my fans."

I'd say that was a pretty lucky and far-flung family. Thanks, Ms. Kitt and may you rest in peace.

JohninKS, thanks for the link. Amazing, she was performing only five years ago!

A bit of music died too as she was, at least to me anyway, at the end of a long line of song stylists that don't seem to be around anymore. Sadly missed............

I have loved Eartha Kitt and her music since I was a child - and that's a long time!! Coincidentally I watched her on Youtube a few days ago and downloaded some songs. Even more coincidentally I was listening to her singing Old Fashioned Girl as I read of her passing in the Sydney Morning Herald today. Very sad news indeed. Her memory will live on with so many of us forever.

Yeah, 81's a nice long life span, but it still seems too soon for that voice to be stilled. She was one of a kind and a great treasure.

Now if the radio stations would start playing her "Santa, Baby" instead of Madonna's (or Kylie Minogue's or Kellie Pickler's). IMO none of the covers have ever come close to the original.

She was actually the third actress to be cast as Catwoman on the Batman TV show. She was, however, the best.

BTW, her recording of the song, "Santa, Baby" finally went gold just after Thanksgiving of this year. It took a while, but it finally got there. Her talent will be greatly missed.

I was lucky enough to meet her in 1982 or so when my job was to take VIP's around special events. She and her daughter Kitt were among the nicest, most gracious folks I've ever met. I've had a crush on her ever since.

Let her passing inspire you to have a colonoscopy,
as colon cancer was what took her, and we all can
prevent it by early detection and diagnosis.

I had a colonoscopy the day before yesterday...
and did it in memory of several friends and
acquaintences who have died from colon cancer.

(sorry if this is too much information)

What agreat loss to us all. A great singer and also a great spealer. I remember seeing her on several chat shows over the tears where she made it clear that she was a great talker on many subjects and often would rather have carried on talking than go and sing.

Sadly missed - a great lady and an inspiration to many

She was a stunningly beautiful woman. I remember in the 60s when interacial couples were a real issue, the question was asked (on All In The Family?): "If you were stranded on a desert island and had to choose a companion, who would it be - Kate Smith or Eartha Kitt?"

RIP, lady.

In 1959, I went with a friend and several of his fraternity brothers to see "Anna Lucasta," a nearly forgotten film by now. It told the story of a young black girl (played by Eartha Kitt) who had disgraced her pious father and family by becoming a prostitute. They decide to bring her back into the family and marry her off to a wealthy man unaware of her past with the intent of swindling him out of his money. She foils the plan by falling in love with the arranged future husband until a streetwise sailor from her past (Sammy Davis, Jr.) arrives on the scene. I've never forgotten that film.

Eartha Kitt lit up the screen with her passion, those soulful eyes and mesmerizing purr of a voice and you knew her pain and torment was real. I remember her from old black and white television variety shows and various appearances on film. She made you believe she was really a panther in a woman's body; lithe and sensuous like no other performer I've seen.

She was always true to herself and her fans. What you saw was the "real thing," with no trace of artifice or pretense. May she find the peace and love she sought all her life.
