BS: The Best Worst Films

Just seen the other thread down there, and rather than de-railing it, thought I'd ask what Catpeeps Best Worst Films are? You know those films that you catch at Two am in the morning, just before bed and usually after missing the first forty minutes, but you can't take your eyes of the screen because it's such a carnival of the bizzare. One of my own suggestions would be the nudie flick House on Bare Mountain It's bonkers and basically an utterly senseless on-screen topless piss-up!

I mean those films that are so terrible they are unbelievable, and shock you into (what the...?) type laughter.

Probably one of the most well recognised examples of such cult classic low budget celebrated trash, would be Russ Meyers' Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill!

There are some really funny old Sci-Fi movies out there too, but some of best/worst the stuff I've seen I can't even remember the names of.

I recall a scene in one fifties Sci-Fi film, where the astronauts had just landed on the alien planet, and decided to relax for a while with a nice fag before venturing abroad! Brill.

Anything made by Cinepix, Montreal's short lived soft-core production house of the 70's, which also made sporadic attempts at "art". Especially the epic "Loving and Laughing", for pure pointlessness.   Many a friend managed to find employment there, producing, lighting, assisting, or just disrobing.

Actually I must mention a film from my own former employer called "Running Time". It is, unarguably, the worst film of all time. No human has ever managed to sit through more than 20 minutes without getting splitting headaches, intestinal distress, and nausea.

Go ahead, i dare you! (If you can find it)

At my request, I received a boxed set of four movies from the Mystery Science Theater series on television. I doubt that you received this in England, but it was a favorite of my son Aaron and me. The pretense is intentionally silly... a man and three robots he built out of common household items are forced to watch the worst movies ever made as a form of torture. Their figures are silhouted in front of a movie screen, and they make endless wise cracks and supply their own dialogue for the movies.

Things have been a little on the stressful side here the last couple of weeks, so I've watched all four movies. I'd be hard pressed to pick the worst of the four, and because the series ran weekly for ten years, it gives some idea of the magnitude of lousy movies.

Do you mean, so bad that they are good? Anything by Ken Russell. Over the top scripts with over the top acting. Deep in a totally meaningless way. The Emerson, Lake and Palmer of film making. Try Mahler or Tommy. Pretensioness at its most entertaining.

The original "Wicker Man", but I guess everyone now sees that as "good". They didn't at first.

Yep the Edward Woodward Wicker Man definitely falls into this category. must watch that again. In the woods there grew a tree, a fine fine tree was he, and on that tree there was a... la la la and from that seed there was a film critic.

My daughters and I found Mystery Science Theatre brilliant and a very bad influence. We could not go to cinema without making MST style comments throughout any film. Yes we were warned several times to shut up by theatre lobby monkeys.

Damn John... that Running Time film is so bad it is almost invisible on IMDB. No plot summary, no reviews, not even a lousy movie poster. How do we find out more?

The very worst of the worst would include these...

"From Hell It Came" - animated tree shambles around Pacific Island at the speed of molasses in January, kills people who are too slow or stupid to escape, great scene with native girl who perishes in quicksand. Unbelievably bad, more than a bit funny.

"The Giant Claw" - astoundingly hilarious and fake flying bird which is "bigger than a battleship" terrorizes the planet. Fairly good script and fairly good acting too...but every time the "monster" appears onscreen the audience will disolve into helpless laughter. It has to be seen to be believed. What were they thinking of???   Great entertainment!

"The Creeping Terror" - this has simply got to be the absolute worst horror film ever made. A mouldy old carpet (with some kids underneath it to make it crawl around) masquerades as a devouring monster from outer space. It creeps! It crawls! At about 3 miles an hour. Despite the glacial speed of this thing it manages to devour a large number of incredibly incompetent civilians and even a few soldiers. Most of the people it devours are women in short skirts and you get to look at their legs as they vanish sloooooowly down its gaping maw. The director of this film MUST have had a major leg fetish (or was he thinking in terms of the audience?). The mouldy old carpet finally meets its end when it gets....hit by a car. Yes. Wow, what a way to end the suspense! The trouble with this movie is, it should be funny, but it's so absolutely terrible and disjointed in every way and just so plain bloody awful that it isn't even very funny to watch it. Well, it's funny, I guess, if you have a lot of time on your hands as well as a pretty sick mind. Watch it if you dare...but be prepared. It might help if you get drunk first.

I am reminded of one of my favorites (as far as I know it never made MST.) It was a sci-fi movie about snails that grew to siz feet in diameter and feasted on human flesh. Look out, Look out!!!!!!!!! Here comes a ginat snail! You'd better start walking away at a leisurely pace as soon as you finish that novel!

I bet the giant snails could still outpace the Creeping Terror...people had to actually go over to the wretched thing's "mouth" and dive in there deliberately, otherwise it would never have succeeded in catching anyone unless maybe it was a quadruple amputee.

People in those films always seem to be so frozen in horror that they can't move to save themselves or else they trip and sprain their ankle while running away (this is a favorite plot device for female victims).

The Creeping Terror also had a surprisingly large stomach capacity, able to devour a great number of people and just keep creeping along for more, and it never gained any visible weight! Astonishing. It must have had some incredible digestive system, because it also swallowed women's high heeled shoes along with the rest of them, and never made a hiccup or a burp. In one scene it devours a very, very fat man, yet its appetite remains ravenous even after that.

There's a grotesque dance scene that's really unforgettable too, with awful music and a bunch of gyrating teenagers who you know are going to get eaten very soon...a fitting punishment for their licentious and irresponsible behaviour!

Almost anything with Vincent Price qualifies. Most of them are entertaining, but "The Tingler" is inexcusable. I'd still watch it again if it was on TV. Any of the bad movies based on Edgar Allen Poe stories are worth watching. Anything from Hammer Studios (UK).
There was a Russ Meyers film - the only one I ever saw - that starts with Hitler hiding out in a remote castle, he gets into a bathtub that someone has unleashed a piranha in, and from the blood emerging in the soapsuds, you realize that even if he lived, he wouldn't be having any kids. It ends in the Pacific Northwest, with some crazed guy chainsawing everyone else. What happened in between is anybody's guess. I think my brain just refuses to remember out of kindness to me. Thanks, brain. Oh, yeah, the women were incredibly endowed.

And who could forget Night of the Lupus where a town is terrorized by giant bunnies? When they'd catch an unsuspecting victim (never quite pictured on-screen) they'd much out on them, although it looked suspiciously like they were eating a carrot.

Bob Dylan has begun to look more and more like Vincent Price as he has grown older. Perhaps a whole series of remakes could be made now of the more classic Vincent Price movies, with Bob Dylan playing the central role in Vincent's place.

Wouldn't that be something? ;-) Just think of it.

"Glen or Glenda" is one of those films where you sit with your jaw open throughout. It was put together for about 12 dollars -- chunks of it are from library documentaries he stole for free -- and then there is Bela Lugosi talking complete nonsense -- all in aid of a "serious" movie about transvestites (Ed Wood's own proclivity). It must be seen to be disbelieved.

Yeah, that Dylan/Vincent Price thing is really, truly weird. Do you think he did it deliberately?

Roger Corman's Attack Of the Crab Monsters
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair
Full of dumb crap, howling continuity errors, bad acting and really awful special effects.
I AM NOT MAKING ANY OF THIS UP:
Radioactive giant telepathic killer crabs do their worst to kill and eat a rescue party investigating the disappearence of a previous rescue party on an island that is crumbling into the sea at an alarming rate for no reason that's ever explained.
I particularly liked the "Naval Research Outpost" that is clearly a split level California beach house complete with bad wood paneling, cheap motel sofas, formica kitchenette, and 1950s fake oriental lamps.
At one point the rubber telepathic Mega-Crabs speak threateningly to our heroes throught the kitchen flatware. As they do, the actors stare at and listen intently for a looooooong time to aluminium forks and knives monologuing on the futility of resistance.
Later two guys vow to got out and rescue one of their lost companians, "as soon as this freaky weather lets up". An establishing shot scant seconds earlier has shown that it is a completely calm evening.
I've barely scratched the surface of this bucket of rotting crustasians.
Oh, also one of the cast is the Professor from Gilligan's Island.
Not quite an hour long, but well worth the rental. You will laugh your spleen out through your nose.

Kendall, "Lobsteroids" sounds incredible! Wow. What a plot. I love it! Monsters in the 50s really had a thing for killing people who listen to rock music. Their favorite manuever was always to burst (or creep) into a dance hall full of teenagers gyrating to awful music and then to turn their licentious, libertine rompings into a screaming bloodbath. You just can't beat that for a dramatic scene, can you?

I can also understand the lobsters wanting revenge for all their little cousins who've been dropped into boiling water. Yes indeedy.

I think the portrayal of a lobster is still within the admittedly stringent limits of Keanu Reeves' emotive range. All he would really have to do is brandish his claws and wave his antennae. Wouldn't they be more likely to cast him opposite the lobster(s), though?

I've been trying to come up with ideas for this, but all I keep thinking of is movies so plain reeking bad that I wouldn't encourage anyone but my worst enemy to rent thaem. One more suitable for this list finally came to mind: "The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across The Eighth Dimension". We sat and watched it with family on my wife's side years ago, at the instigation of a then-teenaged nephew. My father in law sat napping through it, waking up ocasionally just long enough to mutter "this is terrible". I later noticed a copy for $2.00 at a sidewalk sale, and bought it for a gift for the nephew.

The News of the World uncovered that Rafiq Qureshi wanted 20 million rupees (400,000 dollars, 310,000 euros) for the girl, who played the young Latika in the British hit film set in India.

"Slumdog Millionaire", a rags-to-riches tale of children from the slums of Mumbai, won eight Oscars in February, including the best picture Academy Award.

News of the World reporters posed as a wealthy family from Dubai, employing its regular "fake sheikh" sting tactic.

The newspaper published pictures of the actress, her father and uncle posing with their undercover reporter, plus video clips of Qureshi and his brother-in-law offering the deal during their meeting last week.

I am one of the few privileged to have seen "Lobsteroids". There is actually only one lobster claw that someone waves from out of camera view occasionally - very low budget. What I wouldn't give to own it. Musta have been 15' long.
My favourite scene is at the end. The lobsters have been drawn to a truck carrying rock musicians who lead it to a bomb (atomic?). The bomb explodes and it rains chunks of lobster so everyone melts down kettles and butter and settles in to a lobster boil on the beach.

If you have not seen Johnny Depp in the Astronaut's Wife, trust me. it is very bad. So bad it's good. And readily available at your local Blockbuster.

But I still love Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and The Maze (my uncle the frog).

I was so irritated at having foolishly spent $8 on "Independence Day" that I could have happily punched the director in the nose upon leaving the theatre. I felt embarrassed to be even seen walking out of there. Same goes for that wretched Godzilla movie that was set in the USA (New York City) in the late 90's. Godawful. I think it may even have been the same director that did both those movies.

Another film I thought was simply terrible was "Signs", and it finished me for going to Mel Gibson movies or to anything directed by M. Knight Shyamalan.

I happen to like science fiction. That liking has suckered me into seeing some really crummy movies from time to time.

Which reminds me...back in the 70s I made the same mistake when I bought a ticket for the movie "Frogs". Boy was that a baaaaaaad movie! It's astonishing that anyone would even bother to make such a feeble attempt at horror science-fiction or have the nerve to market it after it was done.

This thread has wandered a lot of course, but I think it started as "movies so bad that they are a favorite to watch." Like I think "My Dinner with Andre" blows aardvarks but I get no enjoyment out of the piece of tripe.

On the other hand, Ed Wood stuff just cracks me up. The movies are absolutely terrible from any standpoint, but I just love to watch them becasue they are so damn bad. "G/g" is poor Ed's stab at social issues (in this case his own personal one) but "Plan Nine" just sucks from every angle......and its absolutely hilarious to me. I find myself continually amazed thinking, "Geeziz, did he work at making something so lousy because it is exquisitely lousy and that ain't easy!"............but I guess it was for Ed.

Watching the cops is sheer joy. They leave the station at night, arrive at the house in daylight in a different car, and then go to the cemetery a few blocks away, arriving at night and in a different car. That whole scene is supposed to be one flowing thing but the flow is much like Shit Creek where Ed obviously filmed.

And of course Bela died before the thing really got underway and Ed uses the same few scenes he shot over and over with a stand-in when more was needed. Then, as mentioned before, there are the "SPECIAL EFFECTS." Yeah.....Lemme just say you need to watch them over and over because you're laughing your ass off or shaking your head and you miss the not-so-subtle nuances.

I actually DID enjoy the Johnny Depp portrayal of Ed and Martin Landau was a fabulous Bela.

I regret to say that I have never seen any of the Ed Wood films through. It sounds like I've really missed out there. I loved "Assassination Of Jesse James." The acting was superb. For my recent worst, I wold nominate Peter Jackson's "King Kong." It was an overblown piece of crap, poorly written and a waste of some good character actors. Also, Jackson needs to figure out a way to make his models square in size with his CGI monsters. It was a little noticeable in LOTR, but very blatant in Kong. That ape seems to expand and contract in size on a frequent basis. If I may be permitted one more swipe, allow me to trash Sergio Leone's "Once Upon A Time In America." There are those who consider it a masterpiece. These people are morons. It is weirdly written, and the cast is mostly awful actors, except for De Niro. He was completely wasted in it, but the others all disappeared in his presence.

Subject: RE: BS: The Best Worst Films

I had mixed feelings about the recent "King Kong". In some ways it was very good, in other ways...way over the top. The fight with the tyrannosaur, for instance, would have been far better with just one T-Rex as in the original film, and some believable choreography, not three of them, for God's sake! And fighting while hanging in vines over a chasm? Just ridiculous. But I loved the early part in New York City...and some of the parts on the island as well. I could have done without the battle with the giant insects in the pit.

What the film needed was a lighter and more modest touch. Less excess. Less attempt to impress the jaded minds of a teenage and twenty-something audience brought up on dumb action films.

I also loved "The Assassination of Jesse James" and didn't think much of "Once Upon a Time in America". I find Mafiosos so repellant and disgusting usually that I seldom enjoy watching movies about their rise and fall...though I did like "Miller's Crossing" a lot.

I agree with Little Hawk on "Miller's Crossing", an under-rated gem. Perhaps what offends me so much about "Once Upon A Time" is its sheer lumbering pretentiousness, from which "Crossing" suffers not at all. Maybe we should start a new thread about pretentious cinema as opposed to well-made and enjoyable films. How about "Sideways" which became the great little film of 2004. It was well-written and featured some fine actors showing off their skills, but I never even saw the end of it because the characters were, to me, so unlikeable.

Brief plot summary of "Zombie Strippers" from IMDB.com

In a near future, President George Bush has been just elected for the fourth time with his vice Arnold Schwarzenegger and the USA is in war against many nations, among them Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Venezuela, France and Alaska. In order to compensate the loss of soldiers, the government is researching a virus to reanimate the dead tissue of deceased soldiers and reactivate their brains, to form a powerful army of undead. When the experiment goes wrong and gets out of control in a facility in Sartre, Nebraska, the efficient Z Squad is summoned to destroy the zombies. However, the soldier Byrdflough is bitten by a zombie and afraid of being killed, he escapes to the underground Brademus strip-club owned by the greedy Ianna Esco. Byrdflough bites the star Kat and the stripper spreads the virus, turning her colleagues into zombies and eating the flesh of their clients. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

What about the 1970s culture fest from Down Under - "The Adventures of Barry McKenzie"? Out on DVD I believe.

Sample dialogue from Bazza - "Now listen mate, I need to splash the boots. You know, strain the potatoes. Water the horses. You know, go where the big knobs hang out. Shake hands with the wife's best friend? Drain the dragon? Siphon the python? Ring the rattlesnake? You know, unbutton the mutton? Like, point Percy at the porcelain?"

Featuring Barry Humphries, Barry Crocker (the voice of the old "Neighbours" sig tune), Spike Milligan, Peter Cook, Clive James with hair, and Julie Covington!

Back in another life, this gent from the Northern Territory I used to work with strongly recommended the film. Mind, he used to kip at work on a sheet of bubble wrap as an alternative to upsetting his landlady by breaking his door down after Foster's benders, so I was a bit doubtful. Anyway, a bunch off us went to the fleapit in Wembley and had one of the most hilarious evenings of our lives. All the Brits in the circle cracked up at the crude Aussies onscreen, all the Aussies in the stalls p*ssed themselves at the effete Pommie bastards.

From memory, the follow up, "Barry McKenzie Holds His Own" is pretty bad, but does feature Aussie PM Gough Whitlam in a scene with Bazza's Auntie Edna (Everage). And there is a scene involving a FrogAir airliner with "Defense de Petomaner" signs in the economy class.

"Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" was an okay film, real good cinematography. The book by Hanson is excellent, particularly in evoking the era. Hanson wrote another good book, "Deperados" about the Cole Younger gang, (one of whom lived to be paid as consultant for the movies attempting to re-enact their deeds). I'm not sure how I feel about the casting of Jesse.

My nomination for the worst film ever is 'The Limey' starring Terence Stamp. Pretentious and 'arty' in the worst possible way, incredibly silly dialogue and holes in the plot the size of an asteroid.

Mr Stamp plays a London gangster who goes to Los Angeles to investigate the death of his daughter. At one point he gets himself badly beaten up and only then reveals that he's carrying a gun! In another scene he and a henchman kill someone at the villain's mountain top retreat. They are then chased down the mountain by the villain's lieutenant. Meanwhile we are taken back to the retreat where the cops have arrived after failing to notice the car chase and mayhem that they must have passed on the way up! There is another excrutiating and unconvincing scene where Mr Stamp talks to a mildly puzzled Californian detective in impenetrable Cockney rhyming slang for no very good reason.
It's as bad as any 50s B movie - but there aren't even any silly monsters to laugh at - not a 'lobsteroid' in sight!

"Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" by Russ Meyer

I really enjoyed "Planet Terror" which has an incredible 'blended' lineup of good actors in a movie designed to appear as a 70's blood/schlock fest. Starts with a fake promo for a gory movie with illegal mexican immigrant as a contact killer. Has a hot pole dance as opener, and then mayhem ensues. Top actors in key roles. Horribly bloody plot and scenes. Score is a combination of strip-tease boom-boom with (no joke) Graeme Revell.

Highly recommended for a twisted date movie.

Matter of fact, RS, I don't think I have seen any other Russ Meyer films, though I've read about them, and I think I get the general drift of what to expect... ;-)

The title "Faster, Pusscat! Kill! Kill!" is indeed pretty hilarious, but the movie is simply unforgettable. It is the ultimate in B-movie trash of a certain sort, a veritable triumph of such, and in its own way a masterpiece of camp filmmaking as far as I'm concerned. It doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is....sheer escapism. And, of course, it's a showcase for Russ Meyer's particular obsession which is: massively endowed, ruthless, and deadly young women who totally dominate all the men they encounter. As people used to say, "Go figure..."

Remember the character "Emma Peel" (Diana Rigg) in "The Avengers"? She was a far more restrained and impeccably tasteful version of something a bit similar...only with a lot more class. Most men found her pretty irresistible. I know I did. Highly effective women with unshakable confidence in themselves are just as attractive as highly effective men with unshakable confidence in themselves.
