Obit: Barry Vickers - 1/1/09 (Swindon, UK)

Barry Vickers will have been known to many of the folk community in various areas of England. He has been absent fromt he folk scene in recent years due to the progression of his Multiple Scerosis. His suffering ended on the morning of 1/1/09 in Great Western Hospital, Swindon.

A gifted storyteller and writer of poetry, Barry was also known for his organisation of folk events. Ironically, some of those events were organised to raise funds for Folk for MS - even before he himself knew he had it.

What terrible news!
Barry was a very dear friend who I knew from the time just before he was diagnosed with MS.   As a fellow sufferer I related directly with what he and Sue went through during those days. Sadly Barry's condition progressed far quicker than my own. His efforts to raise money and hold folk events for his local MS Society were inspirational.
Thanks to him several of us had the pleasure and priviledge to sing aboard the Waverly, the last sea going paddle steamer. So many memories!
A Good man gone!

With deep regret,

Bob H

This is very sad news. Thanks to Polly for passing it on.

Like Bob, I have very fond memories of those Waverley trips.

R.I.P. Barry,

Brian

The funeral will take place at Semington Crematorium, Nr. Melksham, Wiltshire, on Wednesday 21st January at 12.15 pm. This will be followed by a gathering at a local hostelry - probably The Barge, Seend Cleeve but this to be confirmed.

Sad news. Again remember his fund raising and the Waverly amongst others. Not able to go to the send off so someone please sing one for me.

Following the funeral at Semintong Crematorium on 21/1/09 at 12.15 pm, it has now been confirmed that there will be a gathering at The Barge Inn, Seend Cleeve. An appropriate hostelry for a send off for Barry as it is right next to the Kennett & Avon Canal which he loved so much.

Brioni & I (John) will never forget Barry. His stories, his accent indeed everything about the man himself. We will never forget the day we bought a "Keepers Lock" CD at Bradford on Avons K & A trust shop. We listerned to it while on board "Stokie No1", our canal working boat, from which at the time we sold coal & diesel along the canal to other boaters. Fell in love wth the discs content so much that i felt it right to phone the contact number on the back, leaving a message to him on an ansa phone to show our appreciation. To our suprise, Barry responded with a return call, From then on, we struck up a smashing friendship with Barry and Sue. Barry will be missed by us both.

Ommitted from my last post.
I have just this moment come off the phone to another couple who became close to Barry. They have no Internet Access, so im doing this on their behalf with their permission.
Lawrence & Vicki Harper (Ex narrowboat "Wakanui)pass on their respects and like us will miss their visits from their home in Market Rasen to Barrys flat in Devizes.

I just want to thank everyone for their tributes to Barry, which I know would gladden his heart. This is an open invitation to anyone who knew him who would like to attend the ceremony at Semington Crematorium on Wednesday 21 January at 12.15. We are making this a celebration of his life. There will be a small reception afterwards at the Barge Inn at Seend, to which you are also invited.
