BS: Is smugness a terminal disease?

I only ask, because there seems to be a lot of it around

Isn't this question a terrible waste of perfectly good thread space?

Sorry Jack... I am feeling better and I couldn't resist poking a little fun.

oops... Sorry I mean John not Jack. Must not be feeling all that much better.

Anyway I should not have made light of something that is obviously bothering you. What's the prob? I am new to MC so I can't really make a judgement on changing behaviours here.

Nah. it's OK mate, it's not a serious question, just a wee exploration, to see if anybody is of a similar mind.

John/Jack

My father who was christened John, was always called Jack, so I don't mind.

Terminal?

Well, I don't think that smugness will kill a person any sooner than they'd be going anyway, but perhaps it is a "terminal" condition for many folks, those who will remain insufferably smug until the day they die...

No, but it drains one's vitality, probably in an escalating feedback loop. If you think you're reading it around here, you've got to remember that what people type probably doesn't reflect well who they really are. I'm sure lots of corrupted communication occurs. (If you try to be very careful not to sound smug, it can sound saccharine.) In any event, if they are smug, they're not happy, and it's too bad.

Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease?
From: Bee-dubya-ell

No, most people afflicted with severe cases of smugness no longer have terminals. They have flat-screen monitors. I guess that makes smugness an LED disease.

02 Jan 09 - 04:37 PM (#2529951)
Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease?
From: Little Hawk

Impossible. One can only be informed of it by others, and one will automatically dismiss whatever they say, because the opinions of others are just so much worthless chaff blowing in the wind... ;-D

If you get several sufferers together on one thread. Is it a Smug-In?

02 Jan 09 - 04:42 PM (#2529956)
Subject: RE: BS: Is smugness a terminal disease?
From: Amos

A good starting point is to assume the worst--that you are, indeed, smug, and have been covering it up from yourself in order to feel humble so you can be even more smug about your humility, and so on.

I have worked very hard for my smugness, and intend to carry it with me through the next several lifetimes, and therefore, ex post facto through their respective deaths.

I suspect smugness to be terminal, therefore, even in cases where people throw themselves on religion in the last hours of their strife in an effort to beat the odds by acquiring last-minute forgiveness. They go off congratulating themselves on their imperfect cleverness, just chuckling over it as smug as you please, until they are rudely awakened by a slap on the bottom and discover they now have to learn everything all over again.

At which point they bawl.

I think you have nailed it in a nutshell, Amos. ;-) You have a great deal to be smug about, clever lad that you are. I dread that point where the slap on the bottom reminds me once again that there is no escaping the cumulative consequences of one's own karma...

I keep hoping to get an escape clause, I really do. The ones who amaze me are those who think they only have to deal with this place once, and simply can't bear the thought of leaving it.

Personally, I'm too close to perfection in all I say or do to ever be smug.

I'm also always right.

Apart from that, I'm a pretty humble guy. Though I say so myself.

And I'd never dream of posting to tell you all how great I am, because I know you already know.

Smugness could be called the sin of pride.
I'd call it a sure fire buzz kill.

It is amazing how stunningly arrogant we can be, while knowing so very cosmicly little about ourselves and the universe.

This is in part why I am amazed when I learn about a discovery no matter how great or small.

In the political mirror:
Republicans are trained in smugness, nobless oblige and the invisible hand (being their own greedy grasp). I am still surprised that Rush Limbaugh appeals not only to the unwashed public but certain high middle class people as well.

Democrats are often smug about history proving them right but as the perpetual victims of corporatism, they will never gain the supreme snobbishness of the super rich.

The Germans have a word for the worst form of smugness it sounds like "shotzenfreuda" - taking pleasure/joy from another's misfortune.

"Oh no that doesn't apply to me!" would be a symptom. :~)
