OK folks. You asked for it.

There will be a Mystic Festival preview concert at The Borderline Folk Music Club of Rockland County, NY on Sunday, April 19th.

The venue will be the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps. building located at 200 - Congers Road, New City, NY 10956 (across the street from Clarkstown North High School.

We will start the festivities at 12 Noon and run until 5 PM.
Admission will be $20 per person with all proceeds going to Friends Of The Festival. We will begin with a pot luck lunch and 12 Noon.

We have official sanction from Mystic for this event and Geoff Kaufman will be coming down to perform and to chair the entire afternoon. Other performers who have already signed on to this project are Finn & Haddie, Charlie Noble, and Barnacle. Geoff is now doing his best to recruit some more performers who are willing to donate their services pro bono for the good of the festival.

The entire event will be professionally video taped and sound engineered, using the latest version of pro-tools to get the highest quality recording. Maximum Impact Media Inc. of Spring Valley, NY will be donating their services for this purpose.

We ask all musicians who would like to participate to contact either Geoff Kaufman or myself.

Hi Salsa,
Rockland County is 40 miles north-west of New York City on the northern New Jersey border. If you look on a map it is where the Garden State Parkway and New York Thruway come together. Our venue is located off Exit 11 of the Palisades Parkway.

We are convenient to public transportation from NYC. You can take the NJT Train to Spring Valley on the Pascack Valley Line or to Suffern on the Main Line. By bus, you can take the Coach USA Red & Tan Lines to New City, the Coach USA Short Line bus to Suffern or the Monsey Trails bus from Brooklyn to Spring Valley. Our volunteers will pick you up at the various terminals if we know in advance that you are coming.

Regards
SOL

Looking forward to this event. I'll probably start the Saturday before by attending the Press Room session in Portsmouth and then proceeding Southwest.

After the event on Sunday, I'll be swinging west to Michigan; anyone want to meet me in Greektown? I'm hoping to do a sea music workshop in Lansing/East Lansing the weekend of April 25/26.

Hi Barry & Charlie,

While I normally put up performers in my home the night before a concert, this year presents a particular problem because of the Jewish calendar.

The 8 day Passover holiday ends at 9 PM on Thursday night the 16th.
On Friday, we are going to be as busy as the dickens changing over the dishes and the entire kitchen from Passover status back to year round (Chometz) status. This is no easy task and will take the entire day. We then go immediately into the Sabbath on Friday night at 7 PM and can do nothing at all preparation wise until it concludes at 9:30 PM on Saturday night.. By the time we find an all night open supermarket and purchase supplies it will be close to midnight.

That is why it is not practical at this time. Otherwise we would not mind having the three of you as our guests. I hope you understand.

Thanks Sol. I understand more than you know. I was not seeking shelter, shade, drink or food (I can get those on my own or just as well go with out) only a good reason for a music/singing party. I'd sleep in the gutter for a chance to be partying in NYC with the loads of friends that I see you've listed. If we're all gonna be getting togther Sunday from noon till 5, I see a party the night before as much a top shelf social event & as a good reason to get all those New Yorkers out of their slumber buns. Someone has to warm them up before they open their mouths to sing.

We are all going to have a jolly good time, but there is one thing I have to tell you all in advance.

The good folks at the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corps have given us their venue free of charge (without us even having to provide them with a certificate of insurance). The one condition that they do impose, and which we strictly enforce at all Borderline concerts is that there will be NO ALCOHOL BROUGHT IN OR CONSUMED on the premises. Since we are having a pot luck, there will be plenty of food and soft drinks to go around but we all must take the pledge at least for one afternoon.

Some performers have raised the question of sound. Yes, we will have a high quality professional sound system. Todd Guidice of Newburgh, NY will be our engineer for live sound and Akiva Kent of Spring Valley, NY will be our engineer for pro-tools recording and videography. Both of these dedicated individuals work together as a team for all Borderline concerts.

When I turned my computer back on tonight after being off line since late Wednesday afternoon for religious reasons, there was a message from Emily Kratzer, the arts & leisure editor of The Journal News which is out local newspaper here in Rockland. She wanted to do a story on our upcoming benefit for the Mystic Festival. I responded to her immediately but being tomorrow is Easter Sunday she may not get my message until Monday morning.

A story like this can either make us or break us attendance wise for this event. Hopefully I will be able to do a telephone interview with her on Monday morning. She also wanted to talk with some of the performers. One question that interests her is why performers are willing to drive 5 hours each way from Maine & New Hampshire to perform free of charge just to raise money for the Mystic Festival.
She wants to know exactly what the Mystic Festival means to performers and why it is worth all this sacrifice to help save it.

It would help if some of you (Barry & Charlie) could e-mail her to
ekratzer@lohud.com and communicate your feelings on this matter. If these e-mails reach her desk by Monday morning it will convince her editor to run the story in Friday's edition.

Thanks

Wow! This was by far the greatest single event in the 4 year history of The Borderline. In addition to the people who made reservations we also had about 25 extra walk in without any prior notice which led to a standing room only crowd and a very enthusiastic one as well.

I can not even begin to describe the feeling of warmth and comraderie among performers and audience alike that pervaded our venue during the entire 5 hour concert. It was like we were all one happy family that came together for a party. We had some of the very best music ever and the food was bountiful and plentiful.

I want to thank all the musicians who volunteered their services gratis and especially those who drove as much as 6 hours each way to get to us. Even I got to get up on stage and perform. I also want to thank all the volunteers that helped us set up and put this all together. Our fellow Mudcatter Celt Addict arrived early from East Lyme, CT and worked side by side with the regular Borderline volunteers for both, the setup and the cleanup. She deserves an extra round of applause for such dedication.

I am totally exhausted but at the same time have a very rewarding feeling of accomplishment. Although I did not have time to count all the money we took in before giving it to Geoff to take up to Mystic, I estimate that we raised around $1,300 for the Sea Music Festival.

I am sure that others will post here about this day's happenings but I am glad that everyone left with a good feeling that they did something really great and special today.

What a great day, and a fun way to spend an afternoon! There was a great wealth of talent and good spirit (not to mention good food) at this event. I never know which pleases me more, getting to see folks I have long enjoyed (including Geoff Kaufman and the Johnson Girls) or 'discovering' folks I had not heard before (Alan Short? and Stu Markus) or new combinations (all afternoon; and Alison Kelley denied that she sings with everyone). The sound was excellent, the variety of performers terrific, the mix of music, new and old, with some rousing tunes tossed in particularly by Barnacle, was highly entertaining. Thank you so much, Rabbi-Sol and Geoff Kaufman for putting this together (and to Cliff and the Ambulance folks for the building). My only suggestion: do this again, and I hope you need a bigger place next time!!

You should be very pleased with the success of this fundraiser. What a blast! And the audience outnumbered the performers. And what an amazing supply of food!

My only regret is that we couldn't have spent more time singing. Five hours was really not enough time to feature each singer or group, and there were sixteen acts and about thirty performers. However, I do also realize that the performance space was only available for the five hours. I do hope that you are encouraged to do this again, and hopefully organize a longer schedule of workshops and concerts. I'd certainly be willing to come down again from Maine.

I'd also like to thank Barry Finn again for leading the choruses for my two songs, Bound Away (Bill Adams) and Mobile Bay (C. Fox Smith).

I'm now staying at Paul's place, some 30 minutes east of Albany, in transit to Michigan if anyone wants to follow my further adventures on my current travel thread.

Akiva also did still photography and we hope to have some photos up on The Borderline website soon with links so that Mudcatters can view them.

It's nice to share the space with other folks who love this kind of music but it's also nice when it raises a substantial amount of money for a good cause.

I'm now sifting through my memories of that evening and for some reason Heather Wood rises to the top with her rendition of "Her Old Deriere." But then there was Frank Woerner, The Johnson Girls, the rest of the South Street gang, Barry and Niel, and Capt. Rick Nestler, and many others. There really is no way to do everyone justice in attempting to review this mini-festival; you really had to be there. Or failing that, plan to be at the Mystic Sea Music Festival in June.

Thanks again, Sol, for pulling this special event together. And get some sleep!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble, still resident east of Albany

Below is a quote from Barry:

"Geoff, just the fact that these funding ventures are attended & sucessful shouldn't it be be a sign to the Muesum that it's an important part of the Seaport's that many feel & think is as important as other aspects of the Muesum????"

My guess is that the Museum will say that they don't have to allocate funds because Friends of the Festival are good at raising their own funds.

Thanks again all you performers,Borderline & other volunteers & audience members for making this a great event.

Kudos to you all.

Regards,
Fay

Kudos to Sol, Akiva, Geoff.... everyone responsible for the fundraiser. We really enjoyed the music, meeting everyone. the food. Kudos also to Anna Marie for the AWESOME cookies. I went off my diet to have two. They were incredible.

What a pool of talent all in one place!

Looking forward to seeing everyone in June in Mystic. (This time we
won't have to rent a van!!!)

By the way, if you are so inclined we can use your vote in the category of New Act of the Year:

Hi, Barry.

Hm.... When I copy and paste the http://www.vmassociates.com/MotifMusicAwards.html
the top address thingy on the computer (Don't you love my computerese--what ever the box by the arrows is), it takes me to Motif.

I'm guessing if that doesn't work you can go to...

www.MotifMagazine.net and click on the arrow that says Vote the Rock. We're under the Americana (Folk) category.

It was great to see and hear you again, Barry. Sorry we were nerved up and pacing so much.

Barry,
I think that the Barnacle folks were nervous because their set was to be a live audition for a future paid gig at The Borderline. From the reaction of our members I would say that they passed with flying colors. That last Klezmer style song that they did demonstrated their versatility and really clinched it for them.
