06 Jan 09 - 10:43 AM (#2532868) Subject: BS: Good thoughts please for my grandson From: jacqui.c My adored little boy, Lewis, was taken to hospital last Friday, having had stomach upsets for a couple of days and coming out in red blotches all over. Blood tests ruled out meningitis, measles and leukemia and so further tests were done, while pumping in antibiotics to see if that would help. Today the tests came back negative so we still don't know what is wrong. He hadn't been able to eat or drink for a few days but can manage a little food and drink now and seems to be a little better, although his temperature keeps spiking up to 40C. He's only eight and, while his mum says that he is being brave, they are having problems getting canulas into his hands and have to change the hand today as the current canula has caused swelling. I'm getting regular emails and phone calls from his parents, who are taking it in turns to stay overnight in the hospital with him. that helps to close the 3000 miles difference but I really would just like to be there to give him a hug. I have seen on other occasions what the power of the Mudcat can do so would ask if you could just put some good thoughts his way. |

08 Jan 09 - 09:05 AM (#2535030) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts please for my grandson From: jacqui.c I just got this email from Sharon, having asked how Lewis is today. Much brighter-the rash has virtually gone, his eyes are still not right but not as bad as they have been. He's had mouth and eye swabs taken today, more bloods and the cannula taken out!!! We should get test results back this afternoon then we can hopefully go home. They are fairly confident it is the septicochal virus. He is not taking paracetomol or ibrufen any more just to make sure they were not masking his temperature. Has to have another 4 days of anti biotics orally. He's definitely turned the corner!!! Now, maybe, I can start breathing again! |
08 Jan 09 - 09:23 AM (#2535046) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts please for my grandson From: Jeri Glad to hear the good news! What is a 'septicochal virus'? I can't find anything on it. 08 Jan 09 - 03:54 PM (#2535398) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts please for my grandson From: jacqui.c Just got a call from Sharon. Lewis was sprung from the hospital late this afternoon. I spoke to him for a moment - he still sounds a bit poorly but is obviously much better. He sent his dad out for KFC for his dinner and, according to Sharon, ate quite a lot - he never has been a big eater normally. They have 24 hour access to the hospital and if they are at all concerned can take him back for a check up without a GP referral, which is a comfort. He's on oral antibiotics for 5 days and, so long as he is fit enough, can go back to school once he finishes the antibiotics. They got back from the hospital to find that a neighbour had left a dish of lasagne for their dinner so they are being taken care of, which is a comfort to me. Lewis still has a way to go before he's totally fit again but it looks like there will be no problems coming out of this. It seems that they were putting lots of antibiotics into him to ward off the possibility of Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Anyway, he's home, neither Sharon or Steve need to be at work until Monday and they are all going to get a well deserved rest for a few days. |

As my favourite card says "Get well soon, you'll feel better!" & we're all feeling better! May he eat lots of KFC & other favourite foods & have a good holiday with his parents in the next few days. sandra |

08 Jan 09 - 07:17 PM (#2535544) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts please for my grandson From: McGrath of Harlow I'm glad I missed this thread so that by the time I got to it there was a happy outcome. It must be terrible to have a grandchild so far away when you're so worried about how he is. And worried for his parents too. Anyway here's a quote that came to mind when things came out right: He prayeth best who loveth best All things both great and small, The strepticoccus is the test - I love him best of all Though when I looked it up it turns out that the man who wrote this, Wallace Wilson (it's a parody of a verse in the Rime of the Ancient Marine)seems to have had "I love him least of all", which may be truer, but I rather prefer the way I've always known it, with "best". |

From personal experience, I know how helpless you can feel when a loved one is ill, and you are far away. Fortunately, KFC has great curative powers-- |

09 Jan 09 - 09:07 AM (#2535935) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts please for my grandson From: Amos I have found no reference to septicocheal virus, either, It sounds like it means an ear infection. But Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a skin condition. In any case better is better!!! A |
09 Jan 09 - 09:11 AM (#2535939) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts please for my grandson From: jacqui.c Sharon may have got the spelling wrong - I'll try and get more info, but it seems that this might have resulted from a bug that Lewis's half brother had when he visited after Christmas. Lewis sticks to Mark like glue when he's around and it's thought that his coughing may have exposed the little one to something that just took hold in his blood. Just one of those freak occurrences I guess. |
09 Jan 09 - 09:16 AM (#2535945) Subject: RE: BS: Good thoughts please for my grandson From: bobad "I have found no reference to septicocheal virus" My hunch is that septicocheal virus is a mishearing of Staphylococcus aureus, which as a skin infection would present with the very symptoms described. |
