We are mostly beginners who play Folk Dance Tunes. We will play slowly and encourage anyone who plays anything to join in. We will share music freely, on paper and via the web, and use Noteworthy Composer 2, download a trial copy from Noteworthy to share tunes that can be played and learned by ear or from the dots. PM me through Mudcat and I will send you the Tune Book The first Session will be on Tuesday 27 January 2009 Thanks for all good advice and support received in the past couple of months. Though 'Export' is disabled on the trial version of Noteworthy Composer (so I couldn't see if it would export in a useable format), a visit to the Myriad website tells me that Harmony Assistant should be able to import Noteworthy (.nwc) files. What is more it can export .abc files. In theory, therefore, I don't need .abc files and could produce them for anyone who needed them if necessary. Cheers, Ian in Stockport |

The trouble with that is that the MIDI to ABC converter doesn't understand repeats, takes a dim view of gracenotes and struggles with triplets, so you end up with a score that looks like the cat's been at it. (I can use Noteworthy, but like Bartleby I prefer not to. My main computer's a Mac, and Noteworthy is PC-only - plus I'm an ABC convert.) |

How I wish we'd had these aids (and electronic tuners!) thirty years ago. Ian |

It will stand up on each of the tables in the Beech and the dots and guitar chords are big enough for most of us to see. I guess some people will follow the dots and some will join in by ear. Honest this is Beginners - we will play very slowly in the first third of the evening and only faster by request. If you all play faster than us lot I will encourage a faster - "Improvers Session" on another night. If you already play in quick sessions please think about the Chorlton Fiddlers Irish Session on Monday nights in the Lloyds, Wilbraham Road, Cholrton. PM me for more details. The Noteworthy file (.nwc) which have also been kindly provided also loaded directly into Harmony Assistant but they produced rather large chords letters directly on top of the staves. I've reordered the tunes for my own eccentric purposes - 1-4 are in G, 5-15 are in D, and 16-20 are in G but need to be played on the D whistle (which probably means they're *really* in D mixolydian but keeping quiet about it). The tunes I can play divide into the ones I can nail every time (on my own, at home), the ones I can nail most times but occasionally fumble a bit, & the ones where I have to take it pretty steady even behind closed doors. At the moment I find that when I'm playing in company my competence drops by about half, so even the nail-every-time tunes turn into "take it slow, keep the dots handy and hope nobody notices the bum notes" tunes. From this fumble-fingered perspective, last night was great - much, much better than the first time. More planxties, that's my suggestion. (And Constant Billy and My Love... in D please Les, and the Hexamshire Lass in G.) |

Also sometimes I couldn't hear myself very well and that is the difference of playing at home and playing with others. I can be a bit quiet sometimes and the chord playing banjo didn't help. Part of it was a key thing and part was i wanted to make a bit more noise and get up with the melodeon. The tenor banjo is a bit brash and unsubtle but we are playing what is basically dance music. Perhaps we should think about who sits next to whom, so to speak. A mandolin between two melodeons wouldn't have too much of a chance but near concertinas and whistles would be ok. Anyone else have a view about seating? L in C |

" The first and third Tuesdays are for songs. The second and fourth Tuesdays are for tunes. If there's a fifth Tuesday in the month then it's a mixture of the two. On tunes nights we always have music books on the tables for those who want to play from the dots rather than by ear. The sessions are held upstairs at Dulcimer in Chorlton, 567 Wilbraham Road, M21 0AE. That's near the junction of Wilbraham Road and Barlow Moor Road, the two main roads that go through Chorlton.
