Continental Flight Fueled by Algae

"On Wednesday, Continental Airlines conducted its first demonstration flight powered partly by alternative fuels. One engine of the Boeing 737-800 was powered by a 50-50 blend of regular petroleum-based jet fuel and a synthetic alternative made from jatropha and algae. Both jatropha and algae are considered sustainable, second-generation biofuels and release fewer emissions than traditional biofuels like ethanol."

In WWII, we had "Victory Gardens"...in the future, maybe we can grow 'infrequent flyer miles' beside the house.

There was a story about this algae this week on an NPR program. Can't remember which one, though.

If we still had flying boats, they could land and graze in the Sargasso sea on the way across the Atlantic...

And while algae hve no feet, burning the fuel they can produce leaves the same carbon footprint as does any other fuel. Of course, like wood or biodiesel, the net conribution is zero, since the carbon that the algae used to grow on came from the CO2 in the air.
