RIP Dave. He lived in a cul-de-sac just off Westbourne Road in the late 60s, and was often in the local late-night shop. I never cared for the music of DD, D, B, M & T, but he himself was a very nice guy. Condolences to his family and friends.

And, of course, as a young police cadet, Dave was one of the first on the scene of Eddie Cochran's fatal accident in 1960 - http://bit.ly/8nIp.

I loved Xanadu when I was in my teens.

Another one gone too early. What a shame.

I loved Hideaway and Zabadak. The band were good in their day. R.I.P.

Oh, what a shame.. :0(

I loved their songs. I sat glued to Top of the Pops when they were on.

It took me ages to remember which way round all their names went..Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich. I got into such a muddle. Had the same problem with the Seven Dwarfs...still do.

Zabadak! Yes!!

When I used to hang around backstage at the Cafe Dansant, Cleethorpes, in the early-mid sixties, Dave Dee and the Bostons played one Wednesday night. What lovely people, Dave Dee and Beaky were especially friendly. RIP Mr. Dee

I am sorry to hear about Dave Dee--I remember, and am still fond, of their music. With the advent of the internet, I was delighted to discover that they, and he, still had many dedicated fans.

They had about fifteen minutes of fame here in the US, perhaps because it was so much fun to say their name. A couple years back, I made up a mix CD for the car with both Xanadu and Zabadak on it and the kids still love to listen to both songs--their music was full of a sense of fun that has been missing from popular music for a very long time, and even all these years later, I think it retains all the qualities that it originally had--

My sister's favourite - I remember her taking me to a pantomime with Dave Dee in it and thousands of screaming girls surrounding me - mind you even I got quite excited when he cracked the whip in Xanadu!
Seemed a nice guy from what I could see and his passing is another reminder of how the years are passing so quickly.

RIP

Sad news.

I knew he was an ex-policeman and (as a Gene Vincent fan) I was interested to read about him attending the scene of the Eddie Cochran car crash.

The band was once supported by Jimi Hendrix .

It just mentioned it, second paragraph.

Pop fans were last night mourning the death of singer Dave Dee, whose band were so popular they were once supported by guitar legend Jimi Hendrix on a tour of Germany.

I did think after I posted it that I did the wrong thing naming the link Jimi Hendrix. I just meant to make his name stand out. At least now that you've mentioned it people will know what to expect. Thanks.

Should have said "The band was once supported by Jimi Hendrix, see here" and made see hear the link.

No, what I meant was that it is a picture of another person in the band and not Dave Dee.

Sorry, I thought he looked different but the face was familiar so that explains it. Thanks for that.

I remember seeing the band on that tour. I think the top of the bill was either The Walker Brothers or Roy Orbison. DDBM andT were eached dressed in a different colour poncho affair for Xanadu and the sound of the whips cracking was very loud! In later years I got to speak to Dave Dee who was a keen supportewr of Wimbledon F C (Football, not Folk), pre-match in the club bar.

DDBM & T played fun pop music, no more no less, and that's why it was fun, it didn't pretend to be something it wasn't.

I often wondered what 'Zababak' was all about and only got to look up the lyrics last night -

Zabadak, Zabadak
Karakakora kakarakak
Zabadak
Shai shai skagalak

Look for meaning not in words
But in the way you're feeling
If it's love we'll understand
For love is all revealing

Like a rhythm like a spell
It sets your soul in motion
Love that's sure could rule the world
A tide to turn an ocean

I think the 'look not for meaning in the words' bit is a very clever twist on a lot of the stuff that came out of the 60s. Their music was pretty clever stuff as well - some leaning quite heavily on music from around the world.

RIP DD
