Dave Nedohin ia awesome! Ferby took $20k so far... can they take more in the final tomorrow? More to the point... who will they meet in the final? Nail biting action! |

All tickets include access to the Keith's Patch... entertainment, good food, cheap Keith's. I hear there may be some local Celtic bands playing. |

You will get the same overhead shots on the big screens. That is a big plus these days. |

10 Jan 09 - 05:26 PM (#2537473) Subject: RE: BS: Are you ready for some CURLING??!! 2009 From: akenaton Hi gnu!.... I used to play a lot of Curling, it's a National Winter game in Scotland, but over the last few decades the climate has become too mild, we don't get enough frost to freeze the lochs and ponds anymore. Curling in Scotland was played at night on small lochs or pools, the ice would be illuminated by Tilley oil lamps and braziers (sp?) provided the heat. Central heating of course came out of a whisky bottle! Upwards of a hundred folks would come out to play curling in our area, and it was a wonderful experience, with the noise of the stones on the rough ice, the cracking of the ice itself as it contracted and the cries of the sweepers and skips. Curling was known in Scotland as "the roarin' game" due to the noise the delivered stones made as they travelled up the ice...Ake |

10 Jan 09 - 06:53 PM (#2537573) Subject: RE: BS: Are you ready for some CURLING??!! 2009 From: Ebbie That sounds like fun, ake. Around here - Juneau, Alaska - people take their hockey game onto the lakes and ponds. Now that Juneau has built an ice rink they probably don't do it as frequently but it was fun to watch. When I was in my late teens I spent a couple of winters in southern Michigan. Young people took their cars out on the frozen lakes and rivers and each tried to outdo the other in sending a car into a skid and slide and then pulling it out again. Fairly safe fun. Saw a few fender benders however. |

Yes it was good Ebbie ..Happy memories...and coincidentally on New years day we used to play Shinty on ice. Shinty is a Gaelic sport, like Hurly in Ireland, very dangerous especially on ice with no protection like they have in Ice-hockey, but it fair got the blood runnin' hot. |

03 Apr 09 - 02:22 PM (#2604048) Subject: RE: BS: Are you ready for some CURLING??!! 2009 From: gnu The Men's World Championship starts here in Moncton tomorrow. I have a gut feeling that Scotland is gonna be hard to beat this year. Murdoch's rink is great. I have not been totally impressed with the way Canuck Skip Kevin Martin has played in late ends lately. Seems to me he has this way of dealing with pressure wherein he becomes detached and mechanical. Almost a, "Let's just throw the rocks and accept what happens." I KNOW that isn't true, but it looks that way sometimes. Of course, if the Canucks peak... Martin's rink will be hard to beat. Fun time.... what about this rink? Martin, Furby, Howard (Russ) and Nedohin... in that order... or would you switch any?... except Nedohin, of course. |

03 Apr 09 - 03:09 PM (#2604075) Subject: RE: BS: Are you ready for some CURLING??!! 2009 From: Rapparee Okay, so this curling thing...let me get it straight: Some guys walk out on the ice slide their stones down the ice. Some other guys sweep the ice in front of the guys who are sliding on their stones. I guess the guy who can slide the furthest and has the biggest stones wins, huh? Don't they get a condition known medically as "Frozen Scrotum"? Do they freeze or otherwise harden their parts before sliding on them? How do they explain the frostbite to their partners or, for that matter, to the guys in the bar? And what happens if one of the sweepers sweeps too enthusiastically and hits the guy in the stones with his broom? Anyway, sliding down the ice on your reproductive organs seems downright chancy to me. |

I didn't see the game or the score, so, this is unbased, but, d'ya s'pose they are playin it cagey and lookin for a shot at Canada in the semis rather than the final? Would Martin throw to China this afternoon in response to such a dastardly ploy? I know that sounds improbale and includes hypotheses which could be considered rude ane even arrogant, but someone has to try to stir up some, ah, er, excitement and interest... yeah, that's it. BTW, Rapaire, the old style curling brooms are quite a weapon when handled properly. As fer draggin yer privates on the ice, that only happened in Scotland way back when they played in kilts. |
