You don't want a crappy old banjo like that. Give it to me!

Looks like a 19 fret tenor banjo. The headstock seems quite reminiscent of some Windsor models to me.

Looks sort of like a John Gray to me, but I really know next to nothing about this sort of thing. But I do own a John Gray, and it looks a bit like that.

It does look like a well-made but not particularly higher end model.

Don't think it's a Windsor - it doesn't have the rounded heel. Might be a John Grey but it's more likely to be one of the many nameless banjos produced in the 1920s and 30s.

Doesn't look familiar to me.

Interesting tone ring setup.

It looks like it won't take too much to get it playable.

If it was mine I would fix it up and see what it sounds like.

Even if you pay someone for the work, it shouldn't take too much.

You might send some pictures to Bernunzio and see if they have any ideas on the builder.bernunzio

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to answer,I think i will restring it and take around a few local clubs see if anyone wants to buy it as it would be a shame to just hang it on the wall {too old now to learn how to play it ]

Looks to me to be possibly a Geo Matthews from the shape of the peg-head, or it could be a Hewitt (very similar). It has been quite a good instrument in its day (hence the spicing under the fingerboard) and has lost the resonator (or back-plate) somewhere along the line, there are marks of its fixing points on the perch pole (or dowel rod).   Looks like the hoop has been re-finished at some time as it doesn't quite fit with the colour of the neck.   It could use some tlc and probably a new skin - if its a natural skin it should be changed every six months anyway! Looks like all the hardware is in place, even if it lacking strings and bridge.   Certainly worth a "do up" and use.   Better quality than you would find in the average shop without paying a small fortune for! Any you are NEVER too old to learn !!
