'The Mission' tune

Whilst preparing a bit of brekkie this morning, the theme tune from the Robert Di Nero film 'The Mission' was played on radio. I find it a wonderfully haunting piece of music. Can anyone tell me if it was composed just for the film, or is it of earlier origins? And what instument is used? Sounds like some sort of pipe.

Regards

Andy

There's CD available of the Mission soundtrack and several compilations of Morricone's other film scores listed on Amazon, should be possible to find the details...

The theme tune from "The Mission" also feature on Incantation's CD "The Meeting", Cooking Vinyl (Cook CD 068), 1987.
The title given in the sleeve notes is "On earth as it is in Heaven", accredited to E. Morricone.

The theme from The Mission is called "Gabriel's Oboe", and is composed by Ennio Morricone.
