25 Jan 09 - 02:37 PM (#2548896) Subject: Philippine Bandurria From: GUEST,Jim My son and his wife just got back from a month in the Philippines visiting her relatives and brought me back a bandurria as a Christmas gift. It is a 14 string mandolin-type instrument with the strings arranged in 6 courses with 1-2-2-3-3-3 courses bass to treble. I presently have it tuned one octave and two half steps higher than a guitar, but the proper tuning is F#-B-E-A-D-G according to the store where they bought it. I'd appreciate any information anyone has about this instrument, how it is played, the type of music in which it is used... Thanks, Jim |

Alternative tunings for the Bandurria Description of the Phillipine Bandurria According to the Museum of World music, the Spanish Bandurria migrated to the Phillipines during the Spanish imperial expansion in the colonial era (1500-1700). "...Spanish empire in which included Mexico, Cuba, South America, and the Philippines. In which the bandurria ended up in its many formations. In which also the Philippine bandurria is still found and played today. This bandurria is used in Rondalla music being a folkoric music in which bandurria, octavina, mandolin, violin, harp or bass are sometimes played and sung to. Mostly this music is popular in Northern to Central Philippines. in Which the bandurria is made in a 12-string version of this instrument. in this case an 8-course instrument, each course having two strings. 25 Jan 09 - 07:26 PM (#2549119) Subject: RE: Bandurria From: Jack Campin The tuning is the same as a Puerto Rican cuatro but with the added F# or (less usefully) the same as modern Turkish straight-fourths ud tuning. Cuatro resources should help. |

27 Feb 10 - 03:21 AM (#2851391) Subject: RE: Bandurria - Spanish/Philippine Stringed Instrument From: GUEST,Anonymous a friend of mine let us borrow her 12-stringed Filipino bandurria. I'm really confused about how to tune it (I researched) because most websites say that the bandurria is a 14-stringed instrument and can be tuned multiple ways. However, I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me how to get this 12-stringed bandurria into the right, most common tuning. Thanks. |
19 May 10 - 04:34 PM (#2910117) Subject: RE: Bandurria - Spanish/Philippine Stringed Instru From: GUEST,Art I have a Filipino 14-String Bandurria and would like to know how to determine it's value. The nut and bridge is made of ivory and has what looks like a tortoiseshell pick-guard. There are no other markings to determine who made is other than a diamond(not sure if it's real) inlayed near the top. Sounds really good although the action needs a bit of improvement. Should I NOT sting it up so that it won't be damaged? Thanks! AE |

22 Dec 14 - 12:41 PM (#3687814) Subject: RE: Bandurria - Spanish/Philippine Stringed Instrument From: GUEST,John Foxen To the best of my knowledge the bandurria is Andalucian - I bought mine in Granada some years ago. The tutor I got with it gave the tuning as G# then up in straight fourths - a tone higher than the F# tuning mentioned in this thread. However, without knowing about the Filipino tuning, I decided that an F# tuning made more sense for sessions where tunes are played mainly in G and D as you get a good run of two finger chords. In those keys. I don't claim to be a good bandurria player but this is a sample of what can be done with it. Pastre Pastresso |

He played a Bandurria on many of the early recordings with Paddy Bell and Bill Smith. I believe he used one later on as well. A great gifted musician and writer from Scotland. Don |
