Origins: Oh Marie (Eduardo di Capua, Louis Prima)

Subject: Origins: Prima's Oh Marie--'suggestive' lyrics?
From: LeTenebreux

My grandmother used to sing a "suggestive" Italian song called "Oh Marie", by Louis Prima. Does anyone know anything about the history of this song, or whether there were any suggestive "folk" lyrics to this song?

Thanks in advance for saving your hero from hours of googling!

Your grandmother was from an earlier age. Not a ripple today.
The song was titled "Maria, Mari," composed by di Capua, c. 1890.
Original lyrics here:

I added the YouTube link and the lyrics in the box in Q's post - from the link he posted. I can't get his other link to the di Capua link to work - but check this YouTube link to an operatic performance of "Oh Marie!," which I'm sure many of us have heard before. Click here for another (I really like this one). Hard to believe it's the same song.

This page (click) has the di Capua lyrics:

Maria Mari

The 'three tenors' (Domingo, Pavrotti, Carreras) sang it on one of their cds, but Alfredo Kraus does it more formally.
I think the Italian tenor Beniamino Gigli made it popular in the 1920s. I remember the old recording my grandparents had.

Two minds on the same song, a wonder it isn't in the DT!

My link to the di Capua lyrics works, yours says "runtime error" but they seem to be similar. Mine listed the lyricist

Corrected Lyrics- Canzone Napoletana

Lyr. Add: MARIA - MARI!
Vincenzo Russo, Eduardo di Capua

Arápete fenesta!
Famme affacciá a Maria,
ca stóngo 'mmiez'â via...
speruto d'a vedé...

Nun trovo n'ora 'e pace:
'a notte 'a faccio juorno,
sempe pe' stá ccá attuorno,
speranno 'e ce parlá!

Oje Marí, oje Marí,
quanta suonno ca perdo pe'te!
Famme addurmi,
abbracciato nu poco cu te!
Oje Marí, oje Marí!
Quanta suonno ca perdo pe' te!
Famme addurmi...
oje Marí, oje Marí!

'Mmiez'a stu ciardeniello,
ce ride 'a malvarosa...
Nu lietto 'e fronne 'e rosa
aggio fatto pe' te...

Viene che 'a notte è doce,
'o cielo ch'è nu manto...
Tu duorme e io te canto
'a nonna a fianco a te...

Oje Marí, oje Marí
.................

Pare che giá s'arape
na sénga 'e fenestella...
Maria cu 'a manella,
nu segno a me mme fa!

Sòna chitatta mia!
Maria siè scetata!
Na scicca serenata,
facímmole sentí:
Oje Marí, oje Marí

I'll bet your grandmother knew the song Lazy Mary. Now that's a suggestive Italian song.

From Wikipedia
"Lazy Mary," a remake of the traditional Italian song "Luna Mezzo Mare", tells the tale of a conversation between a young woman who wishes to be married, and her mother. The somewhat risque song mixes English and Italian verses. The two use double entendre to compare the occupations with the sexual appetites of the various suitors.

Eduardo Di Capua's most famous song was O SOLE MIO.

The title of this one varies, according to various recordings:

AH! MARIA, MARI
MARIA, MARI
MARIA, O MARI
O MARI
O MARI, O MARI
OH MARIE
OI MARI
WAY MARIE

YouTube has these recordings, some in English, and some in Italian (or Neapolitan):

Louis Prima
Dean Martin
Tom and Nicoletta
Viktor Buzás
Emilio Carretero

My grandfather, Umberto Molino, claims the song was written about his aunt, Maria Reitano in Italy. She was a dressmaker for an upper class family, and is reputed as having beeen very beautiful - hence the song.
