Sng/Ssn Lower Stoke Kent UK Sun 22 Feb

Subject: Sng/Ssn Lower Stoke Kent UK Sun 22 Feb
From: Richard Bridge

As the camera zooms onto the square frowning building in North Kent foreboding builds. Is this the dungeon where "Device Bondage" films its perverted orgies? Does the vain attempt to brighten the exterior with now less than perfect paint indicate aspiration or sinister concealment?

Without apparent stress, the man with the violin case climbs the only steps, as a car hisses by on the wet streets with the sound of a frightened cat's arse.

Is this the replay of the St Valentine's day massacre? Will this thing of ours make its bid for control of the local fast boats to Amsterdam, the diamonds, the drugs, the cheap lager for the holiday camp and trailer park?

Coat collar up, a woman, no longer a girl or a maid, clacks up the slope to the reat door, heels a frenzied staccato. Is this the run for shelter, or a rebel without bladder control fearing to laugh?

The man cradles his violin case in his right arm, and pulls the front door.   A violent crack! rings out.

Yes, it's a rimshot on the bodhran. Inside the Nag's Head (ME3 9RD for Satnavsters - really less than half an hour from Eltham for the benefit of the early birds in January) the monthly Sunday session is in full swing. It started at noon and will go on until maybe 6 or 7 or the session beer runs out. For some strange reason this motley collection of misfits and wierdos never turns any player or singer away, and even the indigenes enjoy.

There will be a barrel of real beer on the bar under gravity (more details later, maybe a barrel plus a box of a different one since we slaughtered the barrel last time).

There will be some dishes of roast tatties to hand round.

There will be central heating AND a fire in the grate our end.

OK, who's up for it this time?

Depending on when the festival season starts, it might be the last one (or the last but one one) until next late autumn.

Romany Man - can you have forgotten Argent's hit?

We will build a giant burning fire tonight
We will build it and dance in the smoke
Every branch we'll tie somebody's worries to it
We will burn them and dance in the smoke

I keep meaning to write a few more verses, for Knockholt...

I think the "drunk" reference was to Civil War activists, and not directed towards we sober folkie types, who only frequent ale houses for the express purpose of edicatin the locals.
Ale in mugs is merely a prop to suggest wholesomness, and not for imbibing.
I have yet to meet a skunk, let alone a drunk one.
The picture of a creature that that gets sozzled, raises its tail & spreads noxious odours on all & sundry is more applicable to the seedier side of certain festival fringe youth gatherings.
Lager, I believe, is to be blamed. Not ale.

Tonight I was asked if we would like to do some weekend afternoons over the summer in the garden - pub also has BBQ apparatus.

Dilligaf - we need to synchronise diaries! You may also be able to advise on "Beer Festival" type events.

Big Dick - I spot a tent hire opportunity...

If we do that do we want to have PA (I can provide - up to 10 Kilowatts(!) but I do not expose it to rain)? Or do we prefer to sing unamplified even in the open air?

Which brings me to "bellowing choroi" for Sun 22.

I was thinking maybe "Nelson's Blood" "Boston Harbour" and "The Bold Fisherman". Maybe even my strange version of "John Barleycorn".   I am also working on "the Nutting Girl" and "Sir Patrick Spens" (from the Nic Jones version).

Either Kevin - would you be thinking "Pleasant and Delightful" "Fathom the Bowl" - the French song - and/or "Bring us a Barrel"?

Woodsie, are you going to break your duck? Love's "Who am I? would be great.

Dead Horse - I am REALLY looking forward to those obscure songs of yours...

Mildly Unconcerned - looking forward to your debut!

Summertime sessions sound like fun. Do ya think I need a PA? Locals may need to be warned to put hurricane shutters on windows before I sing outdoors with amplification.   Lately I ain't been holding much back or saving for later.

Do we know what ale is on yet? I have been researching them as soon as they are announced. How weird is that? I may get up to 2 pints this time around. I suppose I should purchase a pewter tankard thingie. Make it official. {Insert resigned sigh here} Now a fully indoctrinated member of the

Middle-Aged Disorder of Folk.

Congrats to Kev on the new job.

Ah. That would be the rig from when Colin Johson and Ron Brown were the managers. There was sufficient confusion that although they were paying storage charges on the rig, they were also paying out to hire a touring rig, because they'd forgotten that they owned one. Snif!

I think it was quite a lot bigger than 25K though.

What is it about this country that if we get a flake of bloody snow the whole system fails, Schools close. There are no buses no trains, there,s thousands of kids on the streets throwing snowballs at anything and everything that moves., My Cat for instance,

My upstairs neighbour throws boiling water down to the pathway to melt the snow so now the pathway is a mirror of Black ice and has slippery has hell. The Russians can keep there bloody snow.

Still getting back to the thread.

I will work on that song

Way up North,North to Alaska, ? ( Cant remember the proper title.

Fisheye is it you who is gonna cav -aulting across the roof top drapped in cables.

Re outside thats good. Otford was great outside.

I have a huge Dr Rythum drum Machine Shall I bring that,

I aslo have a John Coughlan drum stick thrown out into the crowd at a Quo concert In Munich Germany 1976. Nearly took me eye out. It like a bloody Snooker que.

Thanks Richard I will bring it along to the next sess.

My Mandolin has a adjustable Bridge with wheels but I find it a fiddly affair so I have purchased a standard Mandolin Bridge from a Chinese Musical instument shop in Camden. after paying £4.50 for the bridge the China men said "You have to carve it to shape .velly Ticky. I thought " Thanks for that.

I had a brief look at your Mandolin at the last sess and your Bridge is much lower then mine and the string slots are very deep. Mine are non excistant a hairs width in depth.

I am progressing very well with chord changes but it will not stay in bloody tune so its holding me back.

I guess its my fault for going to a Mandolin without knowing much about them.
I like it and of course wont burn it at Knockholt has I said threads back but its so frusterating. I will pay for it to be set up properly if thats what you advise.
Cheers Pete

Trouble is Fisheye I doubt very much I will be at FM until the night the Dealers are playing. which is the 18th after that I am not sure & it will be the end of ther month anyway. I was hoping to get down next Wed but I may have other comittments. Infact looks a definate.

Secondly I do really appreciate the people who have already looked at it, Good old, Keith & George , and countless others , but at the end of the day it does not sort the problem out at the end of the next day the bloody thing still wont play again. Im fed up with it.

If I am gonna progress with this instumentwhich I am, I have decided that its may need a set up and Richard Bridge has offered to briefly look at it and give his opinion. .   Im opting for that....

Its this or I might has well burn the thing it aint no good to man or beast has it is at present,

Mandolin from Hell.
If the Devil went down to Georgia he had my Bloody Mandolin with him.

So I have had enough and im going ahead has planned Im taking it to Lower stoke , Richard can have a quick look and I am gonna take it from there or I still be sodding about with the bloody thing this time next year .
See you soon , I will bring second Sax mouth piece down Folkmob on the 18th for the dealers

Hi John, sorry to hear your news. The same brick hit me a few years back, however after getting over the initial financial shock I realised it was the best thing in my life. It is also difficult to get all those prearranged dreams in order. Then suddenly the door opens into a completely different world. Then you start to kick yourself for not doing it a long time ago. Hopefully your health is just as excited.

hopefully will see you at Lower Stoke. (PS banjo may come also, now that should cheer you up)

Big hug John but you can now be a full time musician and spend quality time with the other half xx

Pete the Hat: mandolins and banjo are both temperamental instruments, that's why it takes an above average musician to conquer them. so hang in there and when you can finally tie your fingers in knots, you will look back and understand why they are not the norm in folk circles.

Hey cuz - something good always happens as they say as I've finished "Just Marks In The Grass" so it now has a tune and a chorus.
I did say I might want to add something so this is what the chorus is at the moment, but it's not set in stone:-

"All that were were, are just marks in the grass"
"All the old ways, we're unable to pass"
"To our daughters and sons, all our families true"
"There's no way that this, should have happened to you"

See what you think, and if I can make it on 22nd then I will sing it, but it will probably get an airing on this coming Sunday at the Greyhound, Wheeler Street in Maidstone for the combined Don/Clive/Shirt murderer birthday bash.

THere is a thread somewhere about it but here it is again - from an email from DonT on the 19th January

Hi Folks,

Just to let you know that there will be a combined Birthday Celebration for Don Thompson, Clive Lever, and Kevin Henty taking place on SUNDAY FEBRUARY 8TH 2009.

If you are a friend, enemy, or acquaintance (creditors need not apply) of one or more of the aforementioned hard drinking reprobates, you are cordially invited to come along and partake of the excellent brew, and the pleasures of this social occasion.

The Venue:-    The Greyhound Pub, Wheeler Street, Maidstone, Kent ME14 1UB (Junction with Holland Road).
The Time:-       Noon - Till 10.30pm.
The Day:-         Sunday 8th February 2009

The Other Reason:- For several years, our genial hosts, Peter & Ronnie, have supported us in running folk music and song evenings twice a month. They have been involved in festivals, and have hosted the annual visit of the Gloucestershire Morris men.

Throughout, they have been wonderfully welcoming and have always supplied food for the performers and audience.

Peter & Ronnie are retiring from the licensed trade at the end of February, and the Greyhound is, we understand, to be closed down thereafter. Just one more victim of the economics of our country.

It is our intention to send our hosts into retirement with a celebration they will never forget, and with a sense of just HOW MUCH their kindness and support over the years is appreciated.

Come, if you can, and help us achieve this aim.

One last thing to say. We want NO birthday presents from anyone! Just the pleasure of our friends, their instruments, and their voices.

Our thanks and best wishes
Don, Clive, and Kevin.

Also in the light of above, the landlady at the crayford arms has said that we can use the arms as a venue if you want to, those that have been before know that it is on an easy bus, road, and rail link, there is a dedicated room if needed though the bar of course is available, and you are all genuinely welcome, sadly cant make maidstone sunday

As to Lower Stoke - the event is not cancelled, there will be one barrel of real beer under gravity on the bar, I do not know which beer yet. The bus service is usable for arriving but dreadful for going back again - the last bus is about 3 or 4 in the afternoon.

As to the Crayford Arms, I know nothing, but it would seem counterproductive to be spitting the participants between two venues on the same day.

If the former Maidstone - soon potentially to be Crayford Sunday sessions could be done mid month rather than end of the month, we could perhaps make a few of them.

Otherwise, even if Crayford is on Saturday and Stoke on Sunday same weekend I cannot make both. But if Crayford is hoping to attract the former Maidstone crowd, I guess they will want to keep it to the same days they had previously.

Oh hang it.

I am just hoping I am well enough to attend the upcoming Stoke.

Yesterday I learned myself Grey Funnel Line on the Sigma. I want to show off.

The Greyhound Maidstone has had regular Tuesday evening folking - 2nd and 4th Tuesdays.

It has NOT had regular Sunday dos. This Sunday was a special, as explained on the birthday bash thread.

My mate Greg brought his Mandolin into work today. Its got the biggest sound box I have ever seen on a Mandolin, The front to the base is separated by the sidebody of some 9 & a quarter inches. Its 8 and a quarter inches at it widest top and bottom and 16 and a half inches long, top and bottom ,without the neck. we sneaked into the photo Lab at work and I photo scanned the whole instument. got a complete colour print of the whole body which I plan to reproduce and make a replica.

Fisheye thanks very much for that above advice, If one can change chords on a guitar one can with determination change chords on a Mandolin.

The whole thing though is made a lot easier if the Mandolin is set up. in tune and one does not lose a bleeding eye with strings breaking every two seconds.

Apart from the expense of it all.Re Restring.after folk with good intent pop a string trying to sort the Mandolin out for me. so far I have purchased 2 sets of strings. 1 New Bridge.
two tuners. In regards to being Tempermentle. My Polish friend She very tempermentle, esspecially at Knockholt, but bloody easier to handle then my Mandolin at present.

now steady on chaps and chapesses this all getting complicated, no one is trying to split anything, lets get this straight shall we. The crayford arms is hosting a beer WEEK with lots of guest ales, not for us, but for the general public, i like many others thought stoke was the pub closing, i mentioned it to the landlady at the arms and she simply said if you want to , you can always come here. there is no clash, and no problems as yesterday i went to the arms and told her to forget it, as there is an obvious problem. Now if the april bash is to still go ahead which was posted on this thread earlier is also going to be a problem then she needs to know as soon as, so that she can cancel the beer order and food order, giving her a chance to arrange something else. hope that clears up any misconceptions.

RM - the April weekend is the same weekend as the St George's Beer Weekend at The King's Arms in Upnor, so none of Gundulf will be at Crayford as we will be dancing at Upnor. I have also asked Dead Horse who have said they will be with us. As for folk singers/musicians - many have already been asked "verbally" if they will be there as they were last year (The Mudcat post goes up when Rob CONFIRMS the date, even though we know it wis going to happen!!!). Not what you wanted to hear mate. A pity, as we like the Crayford Arms and it was great at the last one. If she does another, suggest you ask around if anything else is on before making a defo choice to run with it. You can hit me tomorrow night at practice if you want!!!!

As for the misunderstanding on this thread, the problem was caused by the email that was copied onto hear, trying to be helpful - but - you know what happens - people read half of it and then fill in the rest!!!! The Greyhound in Maidstone is closing (Used to have fornightly sessions in the week); The Nags's Head in Stoke is still here (and not planning on going anywhere - and Hoff is organising Monthly Sunday sessions.) Crayford Arms (nice place and people) COULD offer a new home perhaps, to the homless folies of The Greyhound?? (Only a suggestion).

Hope this helps clarify for all, and again, sorry RM that The KA event clashes with yours.

See you on Tuesday night.

Kev

Ps - please remember to tell your Landlady that we are really pleased with what she does for us and how she treats us when we are there :-)

Cheers mate.

has for Crayford the same applies.

I await date confirmation for Upnor so I will have time to book the time off.
Richards session at the Nags was very good I have booked off the 22nd Feb already so I will be there without fail.

With 52 weeks in the year I guess there must be a slot for Crayford somewhere.

I like sour, I like sweet, and can just about stand dry. It is odd because I like dark bitter chocolate. Well not too dark.

Tam, next time we're at the Good Intent, come with mw and we'll try small (yes - Small) amounts of each of the beers, then you can decide which ones you like. There are quite a few varieties of hop which change the flavour. Then some have more malted barley than others which gives a rich dark colour and taste. I prefer the light summer ales, often made with American hops.

The Masterbrew is very bitter, the Kent's Best less so. We have been very lucky on the beers so far, the Late Red was lovely and the Burns Special wholly spectacular.

From a review: -

"A medium-bodied and well-balanced cask conditioned ale brewed to the best traditions of premium bitters. Mellow brown, with a rich malt flavour and the distinctive tang of Target and Goldings hops.

Kent's Best Bitter will particularly appeal to cask beer connoisseurs, and is a fine contrast to the more widely-available Master Brew and Spitfire Premium Kentish Ale.

Tasting notes:
An ambient bitter, which successfully merges the biscuity sweetness of English malt with the fruity, floral bitterness of locally grown hops from the Kent countryside, to give a clean, satisfying and moreish drink (to quaff, effortlessly, among friends)."

Fisheye - I couldn't drink Bud.... always made me throw up within minutes. Couldn't drink any beer in the US except tiny bits of Miller Lite and that had to be ice ice cold. I drank Bacardi's Rum and Coke and later on Mike's Hard Lemonade. But still pretty much always felt sick within an hour or two.

RB - I read that review when I googled Kent's Best today. I also read elsewhere that it is the hops that make a beer bitter.

Well I will just have to give it a go and see where it takes me.

Linda - yes a taster session for me during the Sweeps. We might only make 2 days of the Sweeps this year. Only booked one night at the B&B.

Thanks to everyone. I think it went very well. The pub crowd were on their best behaviour and indeed I think that for most of the afternoon they were there specifically to hear us. The Kent's Best was a good session bitter - I have drunk many and am not ratarsed. I think we probably left about 8 pints in the barrel - not bad for 22 or 23 people. 1 was on lemon and lime, and one on tea and another on coffee - and some backsliders were on lager, so I reckon about 15 beer drinkers drank about 60 pints (some locals were on bitter too).

Having worked a 13 hour shift the night before I was knackered. The guitar I brought was useless. and my usual get up and play and sing ego was somewhat smothered by consuming 3 cans of Red Bull prior to the event to insure I stayed awake,That just put me on a huge Caffaine rush that lasted most of the day. That mixed with several pints both deflated my playing ability and memory and I only started to liven up has the session ended. so if I am working the night before in future I will not come.

At least I have got the Mandolin in the infirmary. Pickup next week. Thanks to Richard & Brian. When Brian has done with me Mandolin I have several more stringed patients that need his attention.

Richard B. I am transferring from stills to video, the shooting part is easy. A sound engineer I have never been, so it's what comes out of the can. I could shoot silent and have a piano in the background . Besides a 5 min song ends up around 7/9 gyg. and yahoo only allow 1 gyg.
so compression does alter a lot of details.

Never mind i hope you all enjoy seeing as much as i enjoy taking.

He now Roams the mountains of the Lake District tirelessly taking photographs of which he sells to picture making companies and artists.

good one richard, i hope that the words written from the heart, of a life going slowly, and general intolerance, i know we aint angels but we had a way of life that did actually support others in a way, the fruit picking, etc it wasnt all the romantic life lots think it was, no the reality was a hard life and always on the edge, however im lucky in that i am finding a few of the ol boys an ladies who remember and mourn the passing of the traveller laws and the way that tinkers have taken the place of romanies in most folks minds, when we left a tan all we left were marks in the grass, not mountains of rubbish, (tan = camp) im glad that so many enjoyed the song and many many thanks to me cuz the bard for the music and chorus.

Get well soon VT
There are some fantastic folk songs on the internet,
For instance
Go to google Type in for example. Artist name Bob Dylan lyrics and chords and up they pop every song he has ever done with chords and lyrics right in front of your eyes.

This works with all folk music from Irish to scottish Welsh to American ranging from country side folk to Sea Shanties. some sights are crap but the first page or so are great and a terrific asset to anyone who needs to learn new songs like me. The added bonus is you can print them out and build up a nice little folder of all your songs.

I learned Drunken Sailor yesterday in a hour AM and G. Ok that is not Rocket Science but its a start. You can do the same for Mandolin and Fiddle.
