From: Mark Dowding The Lancashire Language Society (formerly the Lancashire Dialect Society) is organising an event to be held on the Sunday at Fylde Folk Festival. We are looking for people from all parts of England who perform items in their own dialect who would be interested in coming to Fylde for this event which will include a competition with various categories for dialect work and a concert which will feature representatives from different dialect speaking areas. It is quite possible that people we are after are members of dialect societies who aren't folkies and won't be aware of this message. If you are interested or know someone who might be interested can you get in touch with me by PM or email - mark@markdowding.co.uk. The fine details have yet to be worked out and at the moment we are looking to see who is interested. This thread will be updated by either myself or Sid Calderbank when we have more information. Most of us do 'people' jobs nowadays where we have moderate the accents we are born with. Either that or we find ourselves on a collision course with the 'lingua franca' that our culture is conducted in. (try reading The Luv Song od Alfred J Prufrock' in a Lancashire accent - as I did when I was seventeen and starting 'A' levelin the language of my own country.) Similarly I married a Derbyshire girl, and I couldn't understand a word her father said to me when we met for the first few times. Apparently his Father had a Derbyshire accent that was even harder to penetrate. I don't think I've ever heard an authentic Derbyshire accent in a folk club - its fast, born of the industrial revolution, urban, clipped and very humorous - but outsiders wouldn't understand a second of it. The Lancashire accent was the accent of my parents. They were both subject to deep feelings of inferiority - because the world had told them repeatedly that they spoke in an accent associated with gormless comedians, dirty back streets; and poverty of mind, spirit, future, outlook and pocket. However if there remains just a little of that gravel in your outlook and your accent - stir the fires and who knows what will emerge. It could be your thing! Last year I won the Presidents Cup of the Lancashire Dialect Society. It was a song that I had never considered singing in a Lancashire accent until someone from St Helens at the Clitheroe Folkus weekend, in February last year, pointed out to me that my song was about St Helens but I wasn't doing it in a Lancashire accent. my advice would be - have a shot at it. I've got another song I've written that I do in a Lancashire accent - but I don't think I will try to defend my crown this year. It felt pretty weird winning it last year. However - look at it another way. You haven't won any awards from Radio 2. Neither have I. they obviously don't like the cut of our jib! Have a go at this one. It could be you! as shakespeare said. The Lancashire Dialect competition continues next year but will probably include additional categories for writings in other English Dialects, as we are widening the scope of the event. Not finalised yet but the day will involve a key note speaker, competitions, a"formal" concert and ending with a general dialect singaround. Personally I can't wait, potentially a unique experience. |

The two go together although you can say the words from one area using the accent of another. I am now going to shelter from the flak that I'm going to get from academics tuning in to this thread!!! I believe it's the first time that a national gathering of English dialect speakers, writers and performers has been attempted and support has been very positive. Some people can't make it (a surprising number of England's farmers are harvesting!), but some are going to great lengths to be there. This could be the start of an annual event which will in future travel the country, being organised by a different region each year. Dialect enthusiasts should head for the Fylde Festival, entries for the competitions and concert can be taken on the day - I'll see you there. More info at events on www.thelancashiresociety.org.uk |

From: Mark Dowding In previous years, the Lancashire Dialect Society have had their competition around Sunday dinner time as part of the festival. Following the demise of the dialect society and the rebirth of it as The Lancashire Society, the committee decided to approach Alan Bell to ask if it would be possible to extend the slot to include an academic talk on dialects, the competitions which would include other dialects as well as Lancashire for one of the trophies and a singaround to conclude the event. Alan found us an eight hour slot in what is a very busy weekend schedule for him to organise so we're grateful to him for that. As with all events like this, however, we are open to suggestions as to how to improve things and I'm sure that after the event we will have a post mortem on how things went and discuss changes - maybe to have it on a different day that isn't Fylde festival weekend. We have got people coming from Cornwall and Norwich so we are aware of distances that people travel and the fact that they have to get home in good time so this is one of the points for discussion. Dangerous time of the year driving on the roads round here, with all the tractors etc on the road. From: SylviaN Well, I had a really good time, even though I couldn't understand everything that the participants were saying. Wonderful event, and well organised - long may it continue. Although Sid will, no doubt, let us all know what the exact results were - for purely personal reasons I will say that John Greaves (Yorkshire) won one of the catagories and Ken Johnson (Derbyshire) was given an honorary mention in another. Keith was very good in the concert (well, you'd expect me to say that, wouldn't you), and so was Mo Keast from Cornwall. If you don't know who Mo is, she's a Cornish Bard, a wonderful story teller and sings songs in Cornish and in Cornish dialect. Another surprise was Johnny Matthews, who played the Lancashire pipes - excellent. Keith and I couldn't stay for the evening dialect singaround, but we'll be back next year. Bigger and better, I say.
