03 Feb 09 - 07:14 AM (#2556004) Subject: RE: BS: idle thoughts From: RangerSteve The reason that the earth is depicted in maps with the north pole on the top is because when maps were first produced, most of the world known to the map makers was north of the equator. My question is: since we don't know where the top of the universe is, how do we know that globes and maps don't depict Earth upside down? Is it possible that the south pole is really at the top? Or maybe the poles should be pointing east and west, with the earth revolving around the sun like a car wheel, on it's side. |

I reckon Gnu nailed that other one pretty well. What is the purpose of laughter? Why is navel-fluff blue? |

03 Feb 09 - 11:18 AM (#2556196) Subject: RE: BS: idle thoughts From: Jim Dixon The head of the Great Sphinx seems too small for its body. (How come nobody but me seems to notice this? I have seen several TV documentaries about the Great Sphinx, where they explore various theories about its origin, and they never mention the problem of proportion.) This makes me think the head must have been re-carved after the body was made. What did it originally look like? After writing the above paragraph, I did a bit more research, and found that I'm not the only one to think of this. See http://www.sphinxmystery.info/, and especially notice the profile shown below the words "Sanctuary of Anubis." * Eanjay: "How do they know that?" is a good question to ask in many circumstances. I can't read a newspaper or listen to a news report without having that same thought. |

Kennedy International Airport in New York City. But did you know that the airport's name was changed twice between those two names? It was renamed "Major General Alexander E. Anderson Airport" soon after its construction and renamed again to "New York International Airport" in 1948. The public gleefully ignored both of those names and continued calling the place "Idlewild" until it was changed to JFK in 1963. |

05 Feb 09 - 07:16 PM (#2558478) Subject: RE: BS: idle thoughts From: Bee-dubya-ell Waht's a linear accelerator? Something to make lines move faster? Speaking of something to make lines move faster, imagine this scenario: You arrive at the drive-up teller at your bank. There are four lanes, and each lane has exactly one car in it. Ideally, instead of pulling into a lane you'd wait a bit and see which car pulls out first and take their place, but you can't do that because there's another car behind you. So, you have to take your chances and pick a lane. Why doesn't the bank have some sort of signaling device to let you know which one of the four customers' transactions is being worked on so you can pull into that lane? |
