Reported on NPR All Things Considered this evening:

Beyman Bros: The Thinking Person's Americana
By Tom Moon

"All Things Considered, February 2, 2009 - Actor and filmmaker Christopher Guest is probably best known for his role as lead singer Nigel Tufnel in the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap.

"But he's always been a serious musician. Now, for the first time in his career, Guest is sharing that side of his personality. He and some longtime friends calling themselves The Beyman Bros have just released their first CD, Memories of Summer as a Child."

"Guest plays guitar and mandolin, mandolin cello, and even the clarinet."

Full story for listening or reading, as well as additional sound and video here.

It's not folk, but if you like "Americana": it's "a striking, spacious sound: instrumentals that exude the placid calm of meditation music, but also carry flashes of rock-guitar brilliance, late-night swamp blues and the carefully knit tapestries of bluegrass. It's thinking person's Americana — lovely and low-key and enchanting, and nothing you'd expect from the guy who gave the world guitar amps that go up to 11."

Not a folk musician? Wasn't he in A Mighty Wind?

I'm sure there's a scene (or more than one) where he plays mando or guitar in Mighty Wind - I seem to recall their group rehearsing in someone's front room and CG sitting on the sofa pickin' casually...? I didn't see the full-DVD version where they show the whole concert (saving that for the next time I visit Tabster) (I'll bring the popcorn) but doesn't he play in the performance?

Thanks for this thread, Dancer - a real day-brightener.

His accomplice David Nichtern wrote "Midnight at the Oasis."

Joe -

It's clear he certainly knows his folk, I just meant that I personally wouldn't use the term "folk" for the music on his new recording. I much prefer "Americana" for this. Others' mileage will definitely differ. ;-)
