2009 Obit: Matt Armour (Great Knight Folk Club)

09 Feb 09 - 01:10 PM (#2561883)
Subject: Obit: Matt Armour - RIP
From: The Admiral

Sad news, I've just received the following from John New of the Great kNight Folk Club Northampton....

Dear Friends
It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that our friend Matt Armour passed away
this morning.

Matt had been ill for some time and had been undergoing tests for a serious illness.
I have been told that he died suddenly, so it is some small mercy that Matt did not have months of suffering.

Those who knew Matt recognised him as a giant on the local Folk scene and he was one of my mentors in the early days of the Great kNight Folk Club. It was always good to see him and hear his music - and his big hearty laugh!
My poor words are not enough - I shall miss the Big Man!

As soon as I know of any funeral arrangements, I will let you know.

Our thoughts go out to Jane and his family.

Regards
John
The Great kNight Folk Club, Northampton.

OH NO! I am so sorry to hear this - one of the great lights of the folk scene has gone out. I have very many happy memories of his club and his warmth and humour - including a freezing snow-bound New Year's Eve when he went out in the winter weather in a kilt with the bare legs, which didn't stop him dancing all night. He'll be in some good musical company up there in Heaven. And he will live on down here through the beautiful songs he wrote. Generations of Change is sung a lot in these parts. Now his season has turned too.

Going to pour a drink now and raise a parting glass to Matt. There's no face-icon sad enough.

We'll walk through the fields that my father once tilled
Talk to the old men who once sailed with me
Man it's been awfully good, I've shown them all I could
Of the past and the present, what the future might be

Oh Dear. Very sad to hear this. Myself and a youthful Mr Downes played on an album of Matts in the mid 70's. He was a fine singer and a passionate, grass roots, club organiser. He will be greatly missed.

So sad to read this, it was a chance meeting with Matt back in 1985 that he told us to get into our car & follow him ( a stanger! )to a place called Whittlebury, the rest is history!
Rest in peace my friend.

My goodness. You think they'll be there forever, don't you?

Matt took his place at the very heart of the UK folk scene; he was the ubiquitous soul of thing as far as I'm concerned. I will cherish happy memories of a thousand singarounds at the Durham Folk Party and a late night chat outside the New Boston in Fleetwood at the Fylde last year (even as 4Square were dropping jaws in the cabaret). A dear old friend & a fine singer, songwriter and facilitator par excellence.

We will continue with his name writ deep in our hearts.

Jane, you are in our thoughts.

Sean and Rachel.

Don't know what to say - Matt and Jane have both been very kind to Sylvia and I over the years and we've shared many a gig too. As Barbara says, Scarborough Sea Fest will be a very different experience this year losing a main fixture like Matt. He'll not be forgotten though - so many songs, so many memories. Very, very sad. My condolences to Jane and the rest of his family. The man was a legend. RIP Matt.

Matt was a welcome part of the Durham City Folk Festival and its successor Durham Folk Party, not only that but he was a friend for those 38 years. I remember him after Colin and Es Ryder and myself had performed at The Stables when we got back to Armour Towers taking the top off a bottle of whisky and throwing it into the waste bin with the cry "The next thing in there will be the bottle" and it was. I will raise a glass in his honour tonight "Farewell old friend"

Though we both ended up making English folk music the center of our lives, I only knew and admired his work from afar in the US. I knew him well when I was a teenager and we both played rugby for Bletchley RFC. if the energy and passion he displayed in that arena was transferred to folk music, the love and affection I hear voiced by friends on this forum is full understandable and the loss a bitter one. I send love, condolences and best wishes to Matt's family and friends.

A wee session

"I came into your company an ordinary man
And the first thing I encountered was your outstretched hand
When you said if you're a singer, then your well welcome here
And through the years you've all become so dear

But I'am glad that I have known you
Since the time that I was young
The stories that we've shared
And the countless songs we've sung
So if one day I'm missing here as missing I shall be
Just raise a glass & sing an old old song for me."

Matt Armour

RIP Matt

This is sad news. I first came across Matt when I moved to Woburn Sands in the late 70's. He was a bit of a 'godfather' in the North Bucks Folk scene then and I don't think he was keen at first on a young upstart like me coming in rippling the waters. I started a Folk Club in Aspley Guise called the Hogsty, Matt ran the Songloft in Stoney Stratford and Drummond Davidson ran the club at Whittlebury we were all Scotsmen in fact the late great Hamish Imlach called us the 'Scotia Nostra'. I think there ended up a bit of mutual respect and the last time I saw him at Towersey he gave me a fine welcome. A fine songwriter and a 'big man' lost to the scene.

I am stunned. I only got to know Matt later in life, just the last 6-7 years or so, but I appreciated enormously his personality, his value to the folk scene, his songwriting, his support.

These are the sad years, as one by one old friends leave us. There will be more sad departures in times to come. But there will only be one Matt Armour, and those who knew him were lucky. My condolences, jane.

Like Ross Campbell, I knew Matt primarily through our involvements in Fylde Festival. Also Lancaster Maritime Fest. sessions too. A gentle, generous and kindly man, I don't think I ever saw him ruffled, and as an MC and singer, his persona immediately put anyone at their ease. Like all the finest writers, he knew that the best way to make a point was softly but in conjunction with a big stick.
Bless him.

I didn't know Matt but I met him at a folk club in Kirkaldy back in 1990. I was scheduled to do a gig there but the promoter had quit and moved to Ireland without telling anyone, so her replacement hired Ian MacIntosh for my slot.(They paid my fee anyway)
Matt sang a song about girls of Reykjavik..."how can I lay her from 200 miles"...
He got a lot of hoots of disapproval for that one, but I got the feeling that he was just being teased and that they were actually quite fond of him.

It seems that Matt has always been an integral part of my life and I was lucky enough to play with him in both the the "Gaberlunzies", and "The Elastic Band" for more years than I care to remember. Since we moved to Australia 8 years ago, our contact was less, but our friendship never faltered. It was Matt who took a young, nervous singer & player & encouraged him to "get up & bl...y well sing!", and changed my life. I'll miss you mate, Mary & I send our condolences & love to Jane.

I was reminded at every meeting by Matt, that he was our guest at The Colly, the night of my 21st Birthday Party, many, many years ago and he took great delight in continuing to remind me as the years rolled by! Each member of the family have regularly recalled stories involving Matt, from his earliest visits to Durham Folk Festival to our Sunday afternoon "drop in" visits to the Vaults session, Stoney Stratford, all recalled with laughter and affection. We have not met up enough over recent years, but thankfully, we did meet Matt along the way and we will cherish those memories. Thanks, Cheers and Fair Thee Well Matt Armour!

Hello All, I was the manager of the Vaults Bar in Stony when I first came into contact with Matt. As we were both from Fife we were instantly drawn to each other. Matt suggested a Folk Music Session on Sundays to me.The success of this, and the artists who had performed at his gigs, and he and Jane had accommodated overnight, were always a pleasure when they turned up on a Sunday Lunchtime. He will be greatly missed by the twangers in this town. If ever the "Soubriquet" Mr Music was richly desereved in this town,it should be accorded to Matt. To quote an employee of any American Supermarket "Missing you Already" , Bill Marston.

Matt's MySpace page has had over 350 'hits' in the last 24 hours. Thanks to everyone who has left nice messages - unfortunately you have to join MySpace to do that, but it's easy enough.

I added some new photos last night, a particularly lovely one of Matt and Jane sent to me by Irene Entwhistle. I'll be adding some more songs at the weekend including Generations Of Change which Matt was adamant I had so I'd better get on and find it!

I know the family are planning a website, and hopefully I'll be giving them a hand with that, but for now anyone eager to listen back to a few of Matt's wonderful songs and and see some nice pictures both recent and not so recent, then please have a look if you haven't already.

Missing you my old pal,

Roddy

More years ago than I care to remember I had moved up to MK from Kent and was desperate for some live music. A friend took me to the Vaults Bar in Stony Stratford one Sunday. I sat in one of the vacant seats and this big Scottish chap in the corner said `If you are going to sit there you will have to sing'..., I only knew one song at the time, but that didn't matter, every one was welcome..,. Matt was a one off..., a few years later still in the Vaults a group of us who enjoyed singing thought about forming a group, we were looking for a name and `The Five Men not Called Matt' were born, I think Matt was slightly bothered about what we were going to do but gave us plenty of encouragement and I know he enjoyed being the one called Matt when we sang together at the Vaults..

God Speed Matt, your sorely missed

Years ago, when trying to do the bookings for Uxbridge FC in the Nineties, I was trying to chase down Martin Carthy and I ended up at the song loft. This was first time I remember meeting Matt and i told him of my mission and he talked to me about clubs and bookings and he made a huge impression on me with his advice and helpfulness, I wasn't a close friend but he made an impact and im very sorry to hear he has gone on. Just heard the sad news today. I first met Matt in Stony Stratford in about 1978, when I caught him putting up posters for his club over the top of my posters for the one I was running in the next town! Uncharacteristic of the man I'm sure, but after all I was poaching on his patch! And what a man he was. We've been friends ever since, and I've enjoyed many times singing and playing at The Loft and Stony Live. He worked tirelessly for folk music and the community and will be greatly missed by many people. My thoughts, and those of countless others, are with you Jane.

A toast was drunk to the memory of Matt at the Belmont Bull, Nr Bolton on Tuesday night, followed by a reading of "The Hat That Sings" by his old friend Scowie. "He's gone to that great singaround in the sky", said Scowie, "an' no doubt he'll be running it!"

Sad news for any of you who knew or knew of Matt Armour. He was taken from us on Monday by an aneurysm. His wife Jane was with him at the end. Ironically (and Matt loved an irony)he had only recently been diagnosed with lung cancer.
Matt was a big man with a big heart and a smile to match, and as well as being a greatly respected songwriter was responsible for fostering many fledgling musicians (me amongst them) at the folk clubs and sessions he had been running for the last 40 years or so in the Stony Stratford area. His contribution to the music cannot be overestimated and he will be sorely missed. If you've never seen or heard him take a look at his Myspace page for a brief flavour of the man.

Forgive me, but I posted another obit thread without noticing that this one already existed (perhaps a kindly mod can delete it and spare my embarrassment). A small but telling incident says a lot about the quality of Matt Armour and his generosity of spirit: He was the opening act at last year's Folk On The Green. There had been problems with the sound system and we started a little late. Knowing how tight the schedule was, Matt cut short his own set so that the next act could start on time and the rest of the day would be back on track. He was a big man with a big heart and a smile to match.

To the lovely "Lady Jane" - On behalf of the whole family, and Meg & I in particular, we send our heartfelt sympathy. Our Mike & Ken gave us this devastating news last night, at The Welly, and we were indeed devastated.
We're all, sadly, conscious that circumstances have been such that we haven't had any contact with yourself or Matt in the recent past and that is our loss.
For the many meetings over the past - nearly 40 years - we'll be always greatful. We always considered that yourself and Matt came as a package - a package that was overflowing with fun and good company.

I can only endorse what our Mike has already posted. Matt was HUGE in both stature and character, not to mention his inherent talent as a master songsmith, which will remain his eduring legacy to the 'folk' world.
It's to his eternal credit that he eschewed 'stardom'and always remained an ordinary bloke as perfectly at home running an impromptu singaround on the staircase of Dunhelm House as he was mixing it with the best - we wish him Adieu and thank you both for your friendship.

Dear Jane -- my thoughts are with you and the family at this terrible time. I have nothing but wonderful memories of Matt -- he was always so welcoming when we met (which was, alas, too infrequently in recent years).
It goes without saying that he gave great pleasure with his songs and singing, but also,as others have said, with the warmth of his personality and the way he could light any group without dominating it.
Apart from many sessions at Whittlebury in particular I recall a memorable night singing with him aboard the Cutty Sark (late 70's I think). Thank-you Matt and farewell.

Just over 4 years ago, I picked up a guitar again. I played a bit at school and university, but only in the bedroom, and I didn't know much and I wasn't much good. I'd decided to have another go, and I relearned some stuff I'd known years ago, and got books and things to learn new stuff. My goal was to get good enough to be able to perform in public to a decent standard - one that gave the audience some respect for their time, and made me feel reasonably satisfied.

I'd known about a monthly sing-around session in Stony Stratford for a little while and got to the point where I though I'd give it ago. I did OK. At that session, someone told me about a weekly Sunday lunchtime session at a nearby pub, so I went along to that, which was where I met Matt.

He welcomed me, encouraged me, punctured me when I became complacent, and generally gave me a place where, week in and week out, I could try things out in supportive company. He'd been doing that for 25 years when I started.

I'm not great at what I do, but I'm much better than I would have been without the Vaults Bar on Sundays, and Matt Armour, in the chair, ruling with the proverbial iron fist in the equally proverbial velvet glove.

I only knew him for three and a half years, but I'll always be grateful to him. I'm sorry he's gone (especially for his family), but I'm glad it was quick. I wouldn't wish the long decline that might have been on him or anyone. And he was there, the day before he went, at the Vaults, in the chair, doing what he did

I only met Matt in the barn at Towersey. I remember the first time I encountered him, when Tony called on him to do a song as the session moved around the room, simply saying, "Matt?" As he stood up, someone near me mentioned his surname in passing.
I then remember thinking, "Blimey, you mean the Matt Armour?" Just a couple of weeks earlier I'd heard Generations of Change for the first time and been completely enthralled by it, and had felt amazed that such terrific songs were still being written. Who was this Matt Armour bloke, I'd wondered?
And there he was, large as life and twice as nice. For shame I can't remember what he sang that first time I came across him, but I do remember a lovely man; unassuming, kind, warm and wonderfully always "just one of us," even though it was clear that his particular talents stood head and shoulders above most of the rest of us.
He's left us a wonderful legacy, and would that any one of us could have done as much.

This is the first song i sung at the session at the vaults.

                      Going Home.

                     Music and lyrics Duncan Whittaker.

I'm going down the road I've done my time,
       I'm going home, going home.
I'm weary and i'm tired and I'm all up and fired,
To go on home, go on home.
My life's been long and hard and I've walked that final yard,
       I'm going home, going home.
Please don't you say you want me to stay,
       I'm going home, going home.
Many years have i travelled this long and dusty road,
       I'm going home, going home.
You stayed by my side with your hand you did guide,
       I'm going home,going home.
With the setting of the sun means that my time has come,
To go on home, go on home.
As you lay me down to die in this place i must lie,
I've come on home, come on home.

After sining this, Matt looked at me and said "Thank you for that Duncan, now you have thougherly depressed us sing something a little happier".
Cheers Matt.

Matt and I go back to the early 70s when I first moved to Northamptonshire and you could go to a folk club every night of the week without travelling more than 20 miles or so from Daventry - halcyon days! Matt was then running the Fox and Hounds club at Whittlebury and soon to front the "folk" face of the (in those days pioneering) WAP - the Wavendon Allmusic Plan founded by John Dankworth and Cleo Laine in the converted former stables of their house. Matt was a tireless organiser, a fine songwriter with a truly colossal repertoire and a mighty voice and presence, as well as a great friend to many local musicians booking us regularly at all his venues in our various incarnations! I also spent the most awesome Hogmonays of my life in Matt's company..as far as I can remember. Our paths diverged a few years ago but Matt Armour leaves a massive gap in the folk scene that is hard to see being filled easily. Love and good wishes to Jane. Bob

I had the privelige to meet Matt, along with Jane, on several occasions when we were fortunate enough to have them at Lancaster - either for the Maritime Festival or for the Jacobite Day which we used to stage. Lovely lovely people - Matt was a delight - talented, pithy, very funny - but mostly remembered because he was so nice. I remember seeing him in his full Scottish evening wear and he cut quite a dash. Sadly, in recent years, Jacobite Day was cut altogether and we were forced to reduce the number of performers at the Maritime and we had to forgoe his company. I know that he worked extremely hard and was (rightly) very proud of the events he staged in Stony Stratford. He always signed off his communications to me 'Love and cuddles, Matt'

He was a great man and will be sadly missed by many. Sincere condolences to Jane.

Matt was like a father to me. From a young twenty year old with illusions of grandeur, Matt advised, coached and presented opportunities that enable me to be the musician I am today. He was always so kind, generous and warm hearted so imagine my delight, that as our time together increased, I came to work and play with him on things like StonyLive and the Midnight Specials. The journey from mentor to friend doesn't end with his parting, but I am going to miss him terribly, there is a hole in my heart that now needs filling, and they only way I know how is to keep the music flowing until I to complete the journey.

Matt, thanks, for my first song, my first single malt and my first gig, these memories are the most precious.

Thoughts are with Jane and his family.

Great send off for a great man. We had to leave staight after the funeral (well, 1 pint!) as we had to go to parents evening!
The gathering was a "whos who" in the folk world. He would have been pleased.

A short DVD of the 2 Youtube clips is now available, if anyone would like a copy. Quality is obviously better than Youtube, and it will (should) play in an ordinary DVD player.

If you'd like a copy, email me at nick@gordongamblin.com, and I'll send it.

There's no charge, but if you feel duty bound, and you'd like to make a small donation to the RNLI, Matt would appreciate it, wherever he is.

I would like to post an update for all that have written wonderful heartfelt comments on this thread for Matt & Jane. As we can only imagine, the last few weeks have been difficult for Jane and she has not had the opportunity to visit the web and see the any of the lovely tributes to Matt (and herself)and the effect they had on our lives. Last evening at dinner, she was presented with the Memorial Book signed by the many people who attended the funeral and the subsequent sessions.(thanks to my partner Kate, and Mary & Steve Johnson for organising this). In addition, the many pages of this thread and the tributes from Matt's Myspace site were included for her to read at her leisure. We will continue to monitor this thread and include further tributes so they can be incorporated into the Memorial Book
Similarly, Jane has not had a chance to read any of the many emails that must have sent as yet.
A huge thank you to you all for the words, they mean so much to Jane and the family.

I have only just picked up this thread, and was stunned to read of Matt's death.
I was an attendee, with my sister at the Cutty Wren in Totton as a teenager, and then left folk for years til I moved to Milton Keynes, and everywhere we went to watch, listen or occasionally sing, there was Matt.
He was INVOLVED in the living tradition, in a way that touched so many.
It is with sadness, that I read of his passing, but with great joy and thanks that I met him, that I will remember him and the positive impact he made on all who met him.
Thanks Matt.

A very great loss. I was an organiser of folk nights in the Mid-Bucks area around 1972 and Matt never once said no when I asked him to come along. I remember introducing him once at Winslow Folk Club as the ' doyen of the local folk scene ' How old was he then? I got a lovely warm letter from him when I got back in touch in 2008 and bought one of his CD's. I will treasure it as a souvenir of the Big Man.

Why that song, which has been sung a lot, in particular? What about some of his less well known ones?
