Lyr Req/Add: See Rock City (Bud Foote)

In 1967 we went to Expo 67 in Montreal.Purely by chance we learned one day that Pete Seeger and crew members of the Hudson River sloop Clearwater were to give a concert at Place du Canada.One of the songs they sang was "See Rock City".The song was about the tourism slogan "See Rock City" which, in the course of the song, popped up here, there and everywhere and, eventually, on the derrière of a woman with whom the singer was about to have sex.I remember that it had a good melody and lively rhythm and was very funny.If someone could find me the lyrics and, if possible, the tune I would be most grateful.

It was mentioned in this thread, and the chorus listed. I can hear it in my head, and I 'may' have something with the whole thing down in the catacombs. I'll look.

One more try. Thanks for the chorus, Bill.

Ok...progress.. (The catacombs were dusty :>) )

Here's a scan of the liner notes, with words.

I thought I vaguely remembered having a printed booklet of "Songs of the Clearwater", with tunes printed, but a quick browse didn't find it. (the catacombs are extensive!)

I'll ask my wife...

Again, great research, Bill! Many thanks! It's not as though it was ever a top hit but I remember thoroughly enjoying it.

It's a meaningful song for me, since I know the guys leading it. I see Andy Wallace often. Jon Eberhart passed away several years ago, but he was a regular around here.....and I finally got to meet Pete Seeger last year.

It's in "Songs and Sketches of the First Clearwater Crew," compiled and edited by Don McLean, 1970, out of print, pp. 44-45. Written 1965 by Bud Foote.

SEE ROCK CITY
(Bud Foote)

I love to go out riding, out in the countryside;
I jump into my automobile and go out for a ride.
I love smell the air in my air conditioned Ford,
but especially I love the scenery
That I see along the road.

Cho:
SEE ROCK CITY! Buy a Stuckey's pecan bar;
Drink a Coca - Cola Next time you stop your car.
Buy my fresh watermelon, Tht I got from the A & P;
You can ride down the line past a hundred miles of signs and
    never see a tree.

I'm going back to nature on a brand new set of shocks;
I love to see the little streams come tricklin' down the rocks;
I love to watch birds and bees go wheelin' through the sky,
But at seventy all I can see is letters ten feet high. (Cho.)

Last week I thought I'd stay at home, my car was in the shop;
I went down to the tavern to get some soda pop.
After I'd been there about an hour or so, I went off to the head;
But instead of lies about girls and guys,
    On the men's room wall I read: (Cho.)

I see a fellow and a girl a-walkin' down through a shady glen;
I see that fellow kiss that girl again and again and again.
I see him take out his jack-knife, to carve into the bark of the tree;
But instead of a dart going through two hearts,
    I was the same old idiocy. (Cho.)

I've got a girl named Suzy, she's big and fat and wide.
I took her ridin' in the country, and we parked off to the side.
When I finally got my hand in her dress, it made my face turn red;
Across her tail was a sign in Braille, and this is what it said: (Cho.)

Thanks for that, EBarnacle. Good job to find all those lyrics.

There were a few parts of EBarnacle's lyrics I'd question, particularly the "conditioned Ford." I OCR'd the lyrics from Bill's liner notes, to attempt to eliminate human error. Note that EBarnacle has an extra verse, about a dart going through two hearts.

SEE ROCK CITY
(Bud Foote)

Well, I love to go out riding, out in the countryside:
I jump into my automobile, and I go out for a ride.
I love to smell the fresh air in my air-conditioned Ford,
But, especially, I like the scenery that I see along the road.

CHORUS:
Oh, See Rock City! Buy Stuckey's pecan bars;
Drink Coca-Cola next time you stop your car.
Buy my fresh watermelon, that I got at the A&P;
You can ride down the line past a hundred miles
of signs and never see a tree.

Now I'm going back to nature on a brand new pair of shocks;
I love to watch them little streams come tricklin' down the rocks;
I love to see the birds and bees go wingin' through the sky,
But at seventy all I can see is letters ten feet high.
CHORUS

Well, last night I thought I'd stay at home, my car was in the shop;
I went down to the corner just to get some soda pop.
When I'd been there about an hour or so, I went off to the head;
Instead of lies about girls and guys, on the men's room wall I read:
CHORUS

I've got a girl named Suzy, she's big and fat and wide.
I took her for a ride in the country, and we parked off on the side.
When I finally got my hand in her dress, it made my face turn red;
Across her tail was a sign in braille, and this is what it said:
CHORUS

(Lead: Andy Wallace. Accompanied by: Jon Eberhart. Banjo:
Andy Wallace: Guitar: Jon Eberhart. Honks, trickles, bird calls and pops: Jon Eberhart. "Eek:" Rita Hurault.)

Notes:
Still another type of pollution—sign pollution—comes under attack in See Rock City sung by Andy Wallace and Jon Eberhart. Both now live in.Washington, D.C., where Wallace is director of a national folk festival organization and Eberhart is one of the country's leading science reporters.
The song — written by Bud Foote, of Atlanta, Georgia - spoofs much of America's landscape where one "can ride down the line past a hundred miles of signs and never see a tree." But, it's mostly fun—and that, too, is a big part of the Clearwater's mission.
Rita Hurault, whose sketches appear in this insert, makes a short appearance here with a well-dubbed "Eek!" for seducee Suzy (apparently, no relation to seducer Suzy in the previous song).

What's the name of the record album, Bill?

I vaguely remember this song, but it's been years since I heard it. I hear a tune in my head, but it may be of my own invention.

By the way, be sure to take a look at this Website: http://www.seerockcity.com

Oh, and this one is a kick: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/2078 - wonderful descriptions of "distorted old peoples' heads (put) onto healthy children's bodies. Huge goggle eyes. Bloated lips. Exaggerated lines and creases on every face."

And, of course, the Rock City Wikipedia article

Are the albums available on CD, Bill? What label?
I've been hoping to find some Lorre Wyatt recordings.

To the best of my knowledge, the only Clearwater album that has been reissued is "Broad Old River," reissued through the courtesy of Maryellen Healey, Vincent Cerniglia and Jan Christensen, who are fellow Sloop Singers.

I believe the reason the other Clearwater albums have not been reissued on CD is a severe lack of funds.

I just checked the site: Clearwater.org, and found that Clearwater II is available in CD format but is presently out of stock.

Lorre Wyatt has one recording for Folk Legacy..."Roots & Branches". I have that on LP. They 'usually' have tapes or CDs of everything.

I guess the 1st Clearwater album was too far back to warrant a CD... *shrug*... maybe someone will back it.
