"MIKE WHELLANS was born in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders a wee while ago (c1945). His father was a jazz drummer playing in local bands and Mike's first instrument, from a very early age, was his dad's kit. By age 14 Mike was playing in wedding and dance bands around the Borders.

Now a veritable one-man live-wire blues-band featuring this crisp, fast, accurate flat-picking on acoustic and electric guitars, wild mouth-harp and his own highly idiosyncratic speciality, mouth percussion - and that really is something; and, oh, yes ... he sings and writes too!

Mike is an astounding guitar picker, equally at home on 6, 12 string or electric guitars, and is an amazing mouth-harp player too. And the other things he can do with his mouth? Well, you've just got to see and hear his vocal percussion to be convinced. Added to this; he sings, is a drummer of no slight talent, writes songs, seems to have boundless energy, and you've got a great entertainment in prospect with the most dynamic one-man blues band any side of the Forth delta.

'...one of Scotland's heroes, a bluesman of amazing ability...a totally brilliant one man band.'

Mike Harding, preview of 'Fired-Up & Ready', BBC Folk & Acoustic Website Sept 2008

'... Britain's foremost 'one-man' blues band...An uplifting album by a Scottish master' Scotland on Sunday, reviewing 'Fired-Up & Ready', Oct 2008

'Have you any idea how much your face gnawingly aches if you unwittingly maintain a smile for almost fifty-three minutes? I do, now that I've listened through this masterful Blues album!' 10/10

Loud Horizon Music, reviewing 'Fired-Up & Ready, Oct 2008

'...just about the best time you can have while staying within the bounds of decency....The newly converted Seasick Steve fans should make this top notch treat their next discovery and I can't recommend it highly enough'

He was good when he played with Aly Bain.

Obviously not a fan.... Never mind, I'm sure there are many out there who love what Mike is doing now.
